A healthy pregnancy is something we all want. As I stared at the 2 lines in the window of the pregnancy test I bought at the local drug store, I found myself catching my breath as I whispered, “I’m going to be a mom.” I whispered those words throughout my pregnancy, even as I saw my son on the ultrasound for the first time and felt those first fluttering kicks.
Anyone who has been pregnant understands the roller coaster of emotions that a woman experiences. I remember feeling overwhelmed with joy one moment and overwhelmed with apprehension the next. I wanted a healthy pregnancy. I wanted my baby to be healthy and strong. To grow a life is a miracle, and while there are aspects like gender, appearance, and genetics that cannot be controlled, I found that taking control over things like nutrition and preventive care helped ease any anxiety I had.
Ensure a Healthy Pregnancy
If you’re pregnant for the first time or the fifth, or you have a friend of family who is expecting a baby, here are 10 Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy.
1. Get regular prenatal care. As soon as your pregnancy test result is positive, you’ll want to schedule your first appointment with an Obstetrician. Regular visits are vital for monitoring the health of you and your baby and can include screening tests, nutritional counseling, education and more.
2. Take a prenatal vitamin. Folic acid is essential to a healthy pregnancy. It is vital for the development of the brain and nervous system of babies and can prevent neural tube defects. Having suffered from morning sickness into my second trimester, I can attest to how difficult it can be to take and tolerate a prenatal vitamin.
All prenatal vitamins with DHA on the market contain DHA derived from fish or algae. In an effort to develop a prenatal vitamin with minimal side effects, OB Complete® Gold launched their proprietary OmEGGa DHA® which is an Omega 3 fatty acid derived from cage-free hens. This bio-efficient form of DHA is more readily absorbed, digested and distributed by your body so that it can reach your baby, helping contribute to a healthy pregnancy. OmEGGa DHA® is egg-based so you won’t suffer from fishy bad breath, taste, or burping after taking this prenatal vitamin. Available as an easy-to-swallow soft gel and placed in on-the-go packaging, this vitamin also contains bio-available forms of folic acid, iron and Vitamin D3. It should be noted that OB Complete® Gold is available by prescription, at present.
3. Exercise: Exercise can contribute greatly to a healthy pregnancy. The benefits of exercise are numerous and include better sleep, improved circulation and improved mood. Remember to check with your Obstetrician before beginning any exercise program.
4. Rest: It goes without saying that growing a human being requires effort. Aim for 8 hours of sleep each night and listen to your body to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
5. Be Informed: Use this time to research childbirth and newborn care so that you are well-prepared when your baby is born. You can also take prenatal education classes through your delivering hospital.
6. Know When To Call Your Doctor: Pain, dizziness, leaking of fluid, and decreased fetal activity are just some warning signs that require immediate attention. Be sure to discuss warning signs and symptoms with your Obstetrician.
7. Eat a Healthy Diet: To promote healthy pregnancy, you and your growing baby requires a wealth of nutrients. Opt for a diet rich in lean protein, heart-healthy fats, fruits and vegetables and fiber. If you are not sure what to eat or how many calories to consume, be sure to consult with your Obstetrician who can refer you to a Nutritionist.
8. Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco Smoke: Everything you consume and are exposed to has the potential to affect your baby. A healthy lifestyle means a healthy pregnancy. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and drugs (including over-the-counter drugs).
9. Stay Hydrated: Aim for 8-10 glasses of water per day and avoid caffeine which can be dehydrating.
10. Know Your Medications: Consult with your Obstetrician before taking any medications, including over-the-counter medications. Ask your doctor for a list of approved medications for common ailments such as headache, intestinal discomfort and seasonal allergies.
