With one week left until the new school year, we are soaking in the last few days of California sunshine together. August is always uncomfortably warm and we often seek respite near the ocean.
With Hurricane Marie generating some of the largest swells seen in 15+ years, we headed over to The Wedge (hat tip to the surfer we met at Sessions West Coast Deli) in Newport Beach where hundreds of locals, photographers, and reporters were on scene for nature’s spectacular show.
I’ve always wanted to have a picnic with my kids on the beach, and with Sessions West Coast Deli offering up an incredible “Last Week of Summer Sandwich Special” beach picnic basket, this was the perfect opportunity to make some meaningful end-of-summer memories. The beach-centric, surf-inspired deli opened its doors in April 2014 on the Newport Beach Peninsula and features a generous selection of gourmet sandwiches, salads, soups, and sides, all prepared daily. While recently expanding its menu to include breakfast and dinner, the heart of this casual dining experience are their sandwiches (they offer 20 different varieties), which feature locally grown vegetables, top quality meats and a unique combination of accoutrements on freshly baked bread.
The establishment itself is hip and cozy with an open, vibrant ambiance. My kids were digging the vintage photography on the walls. But alas, the beach was calling us so we grabbed our “picnic basket” and headed down to The Wedge. We opted for The Foghorn, the Meddock Melee (my kids’ favorite!), and the Summer Zephyr, all of which were absolutely delightful and unique due to the homemade sauces included. The portions are incredibly generous, so we saved our side salads (pasta, potato, and cucumber) for lunch the following day. While Sessions West Coast Deli does offer a kids’ menu, I found that the gourmet sandwiches were incredibly appealing to my kids.
