This year, my son will turn five. It’s a milestone I never anticipated would encroach upon us so quickly, yet here we are, enrolling in kindergarten and prepping for a year unlike any we’ve experienced.
Because birthdays are a big deal in our family, I make sure to celebrate on the actual day with a cake, cards, gifts, and special surprises. When my son began attending preschool, I started bringing in pizza and cake for his class to celebrate on his birthday because I wanted him to feel special and have the opportunity to celebrate with friends.
My son’s birthday falls on a weekday this year (as it has in the past), so he’ll have two celebrations. Given his love for Cars, I custom-ordered a cake based on the Pixar classic at our local Walmart. Walmart offers a variety of customization options…from the flavor of cake and filling to the style and design. Here are the options available:
Size: 1/8 sheet (character designs cannot be applied), 1/4 sheet, 1/2 sheet, full sheet
Icing: whipped or buttercreme
Cake: white, chocolate, marble, yellow, red velvet, confetti
Filling: lemon, strawberry, Bavarian, raspberry, and fun-filled ones like Oreo
If you prefer cupcakes, Walmart offers customization options including cupcakes designed to look like a cake and large chocolate chip cookies.
This custom cake features marble cake, Bavarian cream, and whipped frosting and will be served at my son’s school for his birthday celebration. At 1/4 sheet, it’s expected that the cake will feed 24, and likely more since we’re serving children. What surprised me most about the process is the fact that regardless of how I wanted the cake, it was still just under $20.
I recommend physically going into the store to take a glance at their look book as you design your cake. However, you can also order via phone, which is what I did since our closest Walmart with this capability is 30 minutes away. Be sure to allow 24 hours notice. You can also download an order form from their website.
A custom cake can be very expensive, particularly if you are looking for a specific design. Ordering from Walmart was convenient and affordable and the result is impressive. My son will not be able to eat this cake because of his food allergies, however, I feel good about the cake we’ll be serving his friends since it was custom made fresh in less than 24 hours.

So adorable and what a great price. We don’t really have a wallmart near us but really good to know

You got that from Walmart? We went to a Walmart on Crenshaw and they didn’t have anything like that. They said they were building an area for fresh fruits and vegetables so maybe they’ll have a bakery.
What a cute cake!
