From the moment I saw clips and previews of Disney’s Frozen last year, I knew that it would be a cinematic success. The lush, icy Norwegian setting, a singing snowman who longs for Summer, an award-winning voice cast, and a poignant take on a timeless fairytale all contributed to the film’s award-winning success. After watching several clips from Disney’s soon-to-be-released animated film Big Hero 6, I found myself almost immediately drawn into the story and engaged with the characters. This unique, animated take on the classic team of superheroes has already drawn my son in, who asks me almost daily when he can finally see Hiro and Baymax.
Big Hero 6 follows the story of Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) and Baymx (Scott Adsit), an oversized inflatable robot who’s sole purpose and design is to help people. Designed by Hiro’s older brother Tadashi, this cutting-edge robot can detect a person’s vital signs, level of pain and a number of other physical signs and symptoms. But when Hiro’s brother dies, the loss is almost unbearable…until Baymax steps in and makes it his mission to help heal his broken heart. Set in the fictional town of San Fransokyo, Hiro and Baymax soon uncover a criminal plot that places the city and these two heroes in the midst of danger. With the help of Hiro’s friends Go Go Tomago, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred, this team of superheroes work together to solve the mystery.
A lesser known franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Big Hero 6 will draw audiences in with action, humor and heart. I gleaned a sense of the depth of this central relationship between Hiro and Baymax and I can’t wait to see how this continues to evolve throughout the film. There is sufficient humor and action to keep kids engaged while still offering the type of emotional depth and resonance we expect from Disney’s films.
The original comic-book series inspired Big Hero 6, but the filmmakers did much to ensure the story is new and exciting, with re-invented characters that are both relatable and estimable.
The original series is infused with Japanese influences which led the filmmakers to create a brand new world that embraced those influences while offering a fresh setting not visualized in other films.
Research is an integral component of the filmmaking process, and contributes to Disney’s authenticity in filmmaking. As part of this process, the filmmakers working on Big Hero 6 spent time with researchers at Carnegie Mellon discussing robots in pop culture and soft robotics, which inspired the character of Baymax.
One of the cinematic features I’ve come to love are Disney’s animated shorts. As part of our first look at Big Hero 6, we screened Feast, a brand new short from director Patrick Osborne who worked on the beautiful, poignant short Paperman. This short film follows the story of one man’s love life as visualized through the eyes of his best friend, a dog named Winston. This love story unfolds “bite by bite” through the meals they share.
Big Hero 6 debuts in theaters November 7th, 2014.
