Beautify Your Heart
February 17, 2009
Ladies…I have some important news for you! It used to be that heart disease was only a concern for men. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one major health risk for men AND women!
Fact: One out of every four women will die of heart disease each year
Fact: Heart attacks alone will claim the lives of more than 250,000 women
Among the factors that increase your risk, cholesterol level is a key factor. I just had a physical and had my cholesterol level checked (it was normal, by the way, thanks for asking). One of the things I do to keep my cholesterol level in check is to take fiber every day (My husband thinks I’m nuts because I don’t mix it in anything, I just take the powder at night before bed. He hopes I don’t choke!). I also eat a low fat diet, have begun regular exercise, and try to manage my stress. My mom has high cholesterol and my aunt had a stroke so this is an issue close to my heart (no pun intended).
February is Heart Health Month and Metamucil has partnered with WomenHeart in the Beautify Your Heart online program. It was created to encourage women across the nation to commit to getting cholesterol screenings. Here is a little more information about this campaign from the site:
The “Beautify Your Heart” program encourages women to get cholesterol screenings and helps them learn healthy habits for beautiful hearts. To support this Beautify Your Heart program, Metamucil is encouraging 100,000 women to get their cholesterol screened and donating $100,000 to WomenHeart to help fund heart disease education and patient advocacy programs.
Get In Shape Girl: Flirty Girl Fitness
December 10, 2008
Squeezing in a workout between trips to the park, playdates, laundry, work, and blogging is always a challenge. I have to admit that most days I get more exercise running after my son or up and down the stairs than I do at the gym. I am always looking for fun ways to work out and if I can exercise home that’s even better!
Flirty Girl Fitness is a complete exercise and meal plan designed to inspire women to “unleash their inner diva, embrace their bodies, and have a fabulous time while they work out.” Most home DVD exercise programs make me want to yawn. I usually turn them off before I break a sweat. The Flirty Girl Fitnessprogram consists of various dance routines (and a few “props”) that make you WANT to work out. I have to admit that when I saw some of the titles I couldn’t help but laugh. Booty Beat, Just Teasing, Pole Dancing, and Chair Dancing almost seem like routines a mom should not be participating in. But I started thinking about the fact that although I’m a mom, I’m also a woman. I can’t say that I would do these workouts outside the comfort of my own home but that’s not the point of the program (thankfully!). I received theTeaser Collection which included 4 workout programs, a super cute pink feather boa, the Flirty, Fit Fabulous booklet complete with meal plans and a shopping list in a pink keepsake box.
I used to dance when I was younger so I really enjoyed working out with Booty Beat. The moves are not difficult and the explanations and demonstrations will have you shaking your tail feather in no time! I was surprised at how much of a workout I was able to attain just by doing some of the programs. The site has a complete page dedicated to testimonials from women who have lost as much as 30 pounds and 44 inches with consistent participation in the workout programs. They even guarantee that you’ll see results in 10 days.
Flirty Girl Fitness was created by two sisters, Kerry and Krista Knee and began as a fitness and lifestyle facility in Toronto designed solely for women. They have an additional location in Chicago.
