Boo at the Zoo! Published on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 by

Over the weekend, we spent some time at our local zoo, learning about some 0f the more unique animals that call the L.A. Zoo their home.  Taking my children to the zoo is not only exciting for them, it allows me to provide them with some informal, unstructured education.

If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate Halloween this year, I recommend checking with your local zoo to see if they offer any holiday-themed activities.  This year the zoos in Los Angeles, Santa Ana and Santa Barbara will each host their own Boo at the Zoo. Here are the dates and activities for each one:

L.A. Zoo

When: October 29 & 30, 10am-4pm

Details: Enjoy jack-o-lantern carving, photo opportunities, and eerie crafts at the Eucalyptus Grove, which will turn into a giant Pumpkin Patch.  The Creepy Creature Encounter at the Winnick Family Children’s Zoo will feature trick-or-treating, a chance to get up close with some creepy creatures, and Halloween entertainment.

Cost: Free with paid zoo admission

Santa Ana Zoo

When: October 22nd, 23rd, 28th, and 29th from 5:30 pm to 8 pm

Details: Enjoy trick-or-treating in a fun, safe, environment.  Activities include educational animal presentations, storytelling, entertainment and a costume parade. There will also be a haunted house for teens.

Cost: $12 ($6 for members)

Santa Barbara Zoo

When: October 21st, 22nd, and 23rd

Details: Trick or treat in a safe environment while enjoying themed attractions, ghoulish games, costumed characters, dancing, zookeeper talks, animal encounters, storytelling, a costume parade and more.

Cost: $12
