In our highly digital age, it’s often a struggle to limit our overall screen time. While my son does play the occasional game, it’s not something we’re in the habit of. Three days a week he’s playing, socializing and learning at school. The other four days are our time to spend exploring our city.
Getting outside is actually one of the easiest and least expensive activities for a family. Whether it’s a nature walk in your local community or a picnic at the park, these outdoor adventures provide opportunities for learning, play, and physical activity.
If you’re looking for something beyond the typical day at the park, check out the Be Out There Activity Finder. The bird-themed activities, which are found on the National Wildlife Federation site, offer unique ways for your family to play and discover wildlife and nature. You can search the site by your child’s age, time available, and cost to help narrow down the perfect Spring Day activity.
Here are some of my favorite ideas for inexpensive outdoor play:
Picnic at the park
Set up a tent in your backyard and camp out
Go for a nature walk
Take a bike ride along the coastline
Participate in an informal neighborhood clean-up

I teach them not to waste and abuse things- I teach them to use their brains. They know to think alternatives and ways to save energy as well as money
We teach them to recycle….anything they can… paper, plastic, batteries and even clothing. We’ve also told them that by taking shorter showers and turning off the water when brushing teeth, that they are conserving water. Thanks!

I inspire my children to be more green by taking the emphasis off of buying things. We reuse everything over and over again and rarely go to a store and buy anything new.

Plant veggies-recycle-take walks-help neighbors with clean-up
I try to lead by example; I take my bike when I go to the grocery store and I take reusable bags. I hope my example will teach them these good habits!

Children learn by example. Let them watch you live a green life.
The best way to inspire kids to green living is to model that lifestyle for them. Be seen using reusable bags, towels, containers, utensils, etc. Favor durable wooden toys over cheap plastic. Invest in a water filter so you can keep filled water bottles in the fridge ready-to-go, each person having his own bottle. Favor DVD’s over commercial television (this will also help to exercise a child’s attention span.)

We have a family veggie garden, rain barrels to water the garden and we recycle paper, plastic and aluminum cans.
we have been working on recycling everything.. i think its a great way that you can really “see” how you are helping the environment
My son started a garden.. he really enjoys it!
One way to inspire your kids is plant a veggie garden with them.
I think planting things is a great way to inspire kids to be green. It could be flowers, vegetables or a tree, any could provide a learning experience and some outdoor exercise too.

We simply lead by example. There’s no better way to teach a child something because you can tell him a thousand times but unless you do it yourself, he’ll completely ignore you 1000 times.
We already recycle. We’re working on the importance of energy conservation and water conservation. Difficult concepts for little ones to understand when they are young. In the meantime, we’re trying to instill a sense of respect for the earth and nature.
