Growing up as an only child, I engaged in many hours of pretend play. I specifically remember my set of Barbie dolls, complete with outfits, a house, and Ken to match.  My husband teases me because I had our daugther’s name picked out when I was just a young girl, playing house with Barbie and Ken.  To this day, Barbie is still treasured by little girls all over the country.  And while there have been many attempts to create similar dolls, Barbie still lives on.

Since I love learning new facts, I read up a bit on the history of Barbie.  Along with learning her full name (it’s Barbra Millicent Roberts) I found out that Barbie’s careers (she’s had 125 of them) are integral to her identity and designed to show that women can take on many different roles.  Barbie has “worked” as a TV chef, nurse, ambassador for world peace, and most recently, a computer engineer (selected by popular vote).  Given that we’re highly dependent on technology, her career is very fitting.
