My brilliant little preschooler happily wakes up, eats breakfast and gets dressed for school three times a week…ok…maybe that’s only somewhat true. But my son really does enjoy going to school. I can’t imagine a time in the future where my son would “ditch” school.
One of my favorite clothing stores recently partnered with four elementary schools in the Compton Unified School District to encourage students to attend school on a daily basis. Old Navy invited 200 randomly selected students from schools in the district for a kickoff to the campaign which included a shopping spree. Students who signed an attendance pledge received a $50 shopping spree! Prior to shopping, each school principle spoke about the importance of education and showing up to school every day. If you’re unfamiliar with the Los Angeles area, Compton is an area with a large minority presence. It’s truly inspiring that Old Navy chose to support and promote attendance among these students. I hope it sets a precedent for all students across the country.
Old Navy will continue to support and promote attendance all year long by giving away prizes to students with perfect attendance at the end of the school year. I’ve been an Old Navy wearer for years, but learning about their latest initiative to support education fosters a new respect for the company.
Last week, we headed over to our local Old Navy to see what bargains we could find…check out my little model!

I encourage my children by….before schools starts they are a big part of the getting ready process. Picking out their own things, such as book bags, lunchbox, folders..etc. I always talk up school and how fun it is and give lots and lots of praise. We also have rewards for grades, participation and report cards. My kids don’t love school but they don’t hate it either…lol. They like it that I come in to the school to help out, so I make sure the school year is a positive one.

My husband encourages his older daughter to attend High School, and not ditch, by reminding her of her goals for college. They talk frequently about the importance of her attendance and keeping her grades up. I think once kids get to Junior High and High School, it’s more important than ever to keep the conversation going about how each day is preparing them for their future.

We make going to school a big thing in our home. We talk favorably about the good things that come out of going to school and how important it is to make new friends and learn new things. We also volunteer as often as time allows so Lil Man knows we are excited for him to be in school and to be learning all these new things.

My kids don’t have a choice as to whether to go to school or not…they just go. But when they start showing they’re getting burned out or not enjoying it we try to come up with fun ways to study/do homework and initiate conversations that revolve around how they can achieve their goals and desires in life with school.

I don’t have kid but I do love Old Navy.
My daughter is 16 months old, but learning is never ending. She is home schooled. We encourage learning by making learning fun. We count her fingers and her toes that leads to her tickle spots. We go for walks and talk about nature and the safety of the road. From the moment she wakes up, we have a routine of changing her diaper, breakfast and then playtime as she has a routine at night of dinner, a bath and snuggle time before bed. Toddler years is the age where their brains soak everything up. We watch our language around her (that bad words and try to use correct phrases). Being parents and educators is hard work, but being there for each learning experience is priceless!

This is my son’s 1st year in school. Every morning, around 6:50am, I am outside with him waiting for his school bus. (even if it is freezing or raining) I give him a big hug and kiss right before he gets on and I tell him that I hope he has a good day. Every afternoon, I am at his bus stop waiting for him to return home. As soo as he gets off, I give him another hug and ask him how his day was, did he have fun, and what he learned. Once we are in the house, I sit with him and help him with his homework. I make sure I tell him everyday that I am proud of him and that I think he is doing a great job!

When my kids were in school,there wasnt any encouragement,it was they go unless they are really sick,no arguement its their job to get a education,period.They recieved perfect attendance many years,im old school,I dont bribe or coddle,it was you ARE going to school.An now with the Grandchildren I see them doing the same thing

I always ask my daughter what is going on in school, about her friends and projects. So, actually she loves school and there isn’t problem to go to school.
I am interested in my kids’ school life, help them and encourage them.
i make sure my kids get to school because i’m the one that brings them. if i’m running late, so are they…so it’s a challenge to get there on time.

I encourage my girls to go to school by being an active participant in their school lives. We make sure to spend time each evening at family dinner to talk about what happened that day, so the girls can keep us updated. By being active in their education it keeps them interested as well.

My son is only three, but since he will be starting pre-school next fall, I am starting to prepare him now. I recently got him a lunch box so we can pack a lunch for the next day so he can see how it works at lunch time. And we also have some preschool workbooks that we are slowly working on to help him get that idea that preschool is not all play and no work. I always tell my kids that we will go on a great vacation every year during the summer as long as they are in school.I even let them help decide where we go.I do try to keep it on a really tight budget so no Disney world every summer.

Our daughter doesn’t officially attend school yet but we encourage her love of learning already by taking her to the library for their story time. We take her to a tumbling class to encourage her physical coordination. We talk about what she’s learned and who she sees at class. She’s excited to go each week and we enjoy watching her learn.

I have talked to my daughter about how important attendance was for her and her future. In order to continue the great progress, I have offered a “Just mommy and I” dinner at any restaraunt of her choice at the end of a perfect attendance month. We are in the 2nd month and so far so good.

I am actively involved in my kids classroom, also teachers keep close tabs on attendance, and any absentees would be reported to both parents and the office.

I don’t have kids, but when I was a child attendance wasn’t an issue – I went to school. Period. I had perfect attendance grades 1-6. Junior High I missed some due to dental issues, but otherwise I was there. That being said, high school was a different situation. I cut school. A lot. Loved my classes, but had other problems that made me not want to go.
I’d suggest keeping a conversation going with your kids about their school experience. Are they falling behind in class and need a tutor? Or is something else going on? Often a reluctance to go to school is not about classes, it’s about social issues. Kids often worry about fitting in, and with bullying in the news, keep the talk going!

I always bribe my niece…she starts out with $50.00 for the year and with every missed day that amount decreases by $5.00…she gets what is left on the last day of school before summer.
I don’t have kids, but my mom was insane about not missing school and I was really bad about faking being sick…LOL…she got to the point that unless I would agree to go to the doctor (which I hated), then I had to go to school. It worked!
I encourage them by setting an example. I help them with their homework so they are prepared the next day, and set a consistent bedtime.
