We are proud of our local youth sports group who are the United States Little League Champions! I don’t know if that’s a story however it created real community pride and joy! Plus it taught our youth to never give up even in the face of adversity.

I have so many memories of going to watch my brothers play little league every weekend. We made great friends that have lasted a lifetime! I always wanted to play, but back then, my mom thought girls should play other things, like the accordion. And that is why I will let my daughters play any sport they want!

My favorite memory was back sometime in the 70′s, at the old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. Back then you could bring a cooler in the stadium and my mom made fried chicken. It was a beautiful summer evening spent with my parents and sisters. The Indians won and Oscar Gamble stole home base during the game. There was so much excitement and was everything was perfect. The evening ended with a spectacular fireworks show.

i;m not sure this counts as a youth sports story but when I was young, oh probaby 3rd grade, my mom put me in tennis lessons. the teacher was really mean and boring. I didn’t enjoy the lessons. SO, I would always er uh “accidentally” hit my ball over the fence around the court (it was group style lessons) and then have to go retrieve it which took a long time, therefore I would have to miss class time.

I never got to play sports myself, but I always went to my nephew’s baseball and football youth games. Some things has changed over the years as I remember watching my friends playing when I was a kid. One thing I can say is sportsmanship is such a wonderful thing that is taught in youth sports. When I was little, I remember the winning team just bragging like crazy or the kids behaving in an upsetting way. Now, I see teams congrat eachother, getting and giving advice and the thrive to not just win, but mostly have fun. That is what sports should be about. Great to advance one’s skills, but can’t enjoy the game if not having fun.

My daughter does track and field she was actually in the lead in hurdles and I was so proud of her never seen her run hurdles like that. But then I closed my eyes to pray and heard the crown yell OH! It was my daughter on the ground not responding she tripped on a hurdle and I ran down to the field and before I could get there she jumped up and yelled out I got this she finished the race of course last but man never seen a crowd so happy for her finishing the race and she had great sportmanship!

(I wish too. lol) Through this sport, both my sons have learned so much about how to play as a team, play fairly and how to be a good loser too…all qualities that will help them in life.

Both of my daughters play soccer. My 8yo daughter is a natural at it and is so much fun to watch. However, my 4yo daughter has no idea what she is doing out there and just follows everyone around with a huge smile on her face. Last night during the game, she finally kicked the ball (only once)on her own. We were so happy and proud of her that you would have thought she won the world series….LOL

My kids both played base/softball from age 6 until they were off to college. I still remember the night my son got hit in the head (helmet) by a pitch. I was keeping score and stayed in the dugout–I figured he’d be fine. However, my SIL came flying out of the stands and ran onto the field. Still cracks me up, 20 years later.

The weather was snowy and my husband thought he saw the bus turn around and head back to town so thats what we did also. Unfortunately we were following the wrong bus. My three year daughter was put on second base, not really having a clue why she was put there. She did a great job at standing on the base making sure no one touched it. Well a four year boy ran towards her and stopped on the base. My daughter was not about to let that happen so with her tummy she pushed him off the base. It didn’t stop there the boy decided he would do the same. So they were both pushing eachother off the base using their tummies. My daughter won her tummy was bigger.I

When my son played little league football it was so funny in the begining the kids would be all dressed up in thier uniforms and all of a sudden it would be an hour later before they actually started practice because the boys would all of a sudden after dressing them in full gear need to go potty.

I have such great memories of going to the ball field to watch my cousins play Little League. They played every summer and for some reason I adored going out there, sitting on the stands and cheering!

When I was younger it was even my dream to grow up to be the 1st base”woman” for the NY Yankees. :)

My daughter was 7 and my husband insisted on signing her up for softball; her 3 older brothers all played and he was determined she’d be a softball star. The first game she was in the outfield. Halfway through the inning she suddenly takes off and starts running off the field and straight for the port-a-potty bringing the game to a screeching halt. My husband never told her you can’t just run off the field in the middle of the game LOL.

  • by Jennifer Short September 18, 2010 at 12:03 am

I still don’t know how this happened, but I swear it did. When I was in 3rd grade gym class, we were playing kickball. I’d been hit in the head with the ball and was sidelined with a bloody nose (back then blood was only an inconvenience and not a health hazard, so no going to the nurse.) This kid kicked the ball, and it came towards me and landed on my head and sat there until another kid came and removed it from my noggin’. It sounds impossible, but it happened!

One time my brother decided that he wanted to try football. So they went to the orientation day, he got all padded up and they went out there (he knew nothing about football) and on the first exercise some kid tackled him. • by Elizabeth N. September 19, 2010 at 5:27 am

I remember when my sister and I played soccer in middle school. We had to ride our bikes about 3 miles to get to practice. One day, it started storming when we were about half way there – a typical Florida thunderstorm. We were so afraid we were going to get struck by lightning that we sang little kids songs the rest of the way. And by the time we got there, they had canceled practice anyway!

If the ball had been straight it would have went over the fence. You should have heard the other parents. They couldn’t believe it. She ended up hitting a double with 3 rbis. I’ve coached softball for 10 years and one of the most rewarding experiences was last year’s team. The previous season, the team won only one game all season. Last year, we won as many as we lost. It required a lot of hard work on the part of the players as well as the 3 coaches, but it was so worth it.

In early elementary school I was a sickly child, missed school a lot and was always picked last to be on the school athletic teams. So, I decided that I would go into a restful state and visualize myself playing every game at school perfectly. After awhile, I was the first one the boys would pick to be on their teams and really did well in basketball, dodgeball, handball, tetherball, and volleyball. In fourth grade I was selected by my classmates to receive the “Best Sportsmanship Award,” which included outstanding citizenship as well as the ability to “play ball.” In junior high I received chevron citations for excellent ball playing and sportsmanship. All of these awards helped with my self-exteem.

I took part in almost every youth sport when I was younger and quit every single one when I realized I had no athletic ability whatsoever.
haha, I did realize through playing my passion for fashion by accessorizing all my uniforms.

When I was in 6th grade the teacher had all of us compete in things such as sprinting, jumping, etc. We competed against the boys also. Well, did the boys get upset because I beat every single one of them in the sprint! LOL

I used to coach youth soccer at the local YMCA and it was so rewarding to work with the kids.

  • by Jane September 20, 2010 at 5:27 pm

I remember as a kid that either my mom or dad would always come to all my games. My dad was the calm one while my mom would get worked up and shout a lot, lol.

I played first base. A lefty whacked the ball at me so fast that I was caught off guard, but I snagged the ball nonetheless, then it bounced out of my glove, and I caught it again, only to lose it ONE more time before I FINALLY held on to that sucker for dear life and for the out. They called me The Juggler from then on.

My son played soccer, and he loved sliding in the mud on purpose!

Little league – a triple; which was a bunt and a 2 base error.

  • by Katie September 20, 2010 at 7:18 pm

My favorite was watching my son play in his first soccer game. They didn’t score any goals but he had a huge grin on his face the entire time!

  • by OlyveOyl September 20, 2010 at 7:46 pm

We have supported many of the youth sports leagues in our county. I have carpooled many kids from one end of town to another as a “free taxi” so the kids could play while their parents did something else – I believe in support and family time and will help to lend a hand. We are in the midst of our soccer and volleyball season and every sport overlaps somewhere – next will be fall baseball/softball, then basketball and swimming, to running, tennis and so much more – I enjoy watching the kids smile – when we have special needs kids on our teams or working with the special needs soccer association or the spec ial olympics it is nice to have a buddy by your side to help bring joy to others – priceless.

I never played sports as a kid, which I regret now. I remember watching my brother play baseball and being so envious when he would hit the ball and everyone would cheer for him.

  • by Jay F. September 20, 2010 at 8:29 pm

We were watching my daughter’s first cross country meet. We saw a 7th grade boy running all out for the finish when his shoe flew off about 20 feet from the finish line. The boy stopped, went back to collect his shoe, then finished, losing two places…..Got it on video

I remember my very first NFL football game was with my parents. I was a freshman in high school and we went to see the Bucs play the Patriots. Funny thing was my mascot for school at the time was the Patriot, so I was kinda torn on whether to keep rooting for my Bucs or switch because my mascot was the Patriot and a few friends were there. I didn’t really understand the game, but it was SO much fun! We tailgated, rivaled and had a blast. My parents have not been to game since the one and only game they were able to take me to in high school.

I would absolutely LOVE to win this and be able to take them to another Bucs game or a Tampabay Devil Rays game. Thank you for the chance to win!

My first personal experience with youth sports has been watching my nephew start to play tee-ball. He was so resistant at first, mostly because he didn’t quite grasp the game and didn’t show a lot of skill, but it’s been amazing seeing him learn patience and practicing with his dad and brother every day, and my favorite memory came so far when he got his first official hit earlier this summer — the look of shock and excitement on his face was priceless, and it was a terrific family moment. Thanks!

  • by Louise Werre September 20, 2010 at 9:10 pm

My dad was pitcher for the local ball team when I was a kid. Our fondest memories were that he would play ball with us kids almost every night before the game. We THOUGHT he was playing with US–instead he was practicing up for Sundays game.

He did teach me to pitch, tho, and I often pitched for the kid games–even tho I was a girl!– and back then, girl pitchers werent so popular!

I played volleyball a lot. It was pretty funny since I was 5’1″, and I was REALLY good at it! Until I made a jock mad at me, and decided to punt the ball at me. I had the imprint of a volleyball on my butt for a week!

One of my favorite sports memories is when our team allowed a little girl with retardation to play with us on certain games. She would be so happy when she scored a hit, and we let her score runs. It made her and her parents so happy.

My fave youth sports story is when my son finally got to go to a baseball game…He was very excited that when the people danced in the stands they might get shown on the screen…so when it started he danced and danced and danced and got shown twice!!! They came over and gave him a free shirt because they caught him twice, what a great day!

I do not have one favorite story to single out, but I enjoyed watching each time my daughter tried a new sport, not to mention the other children there who were doing the same thing. Witnessing some children rule out future playing of a sport, while others’ eyes lit up as they found something they enjoyed, was memorable. You only get to start playing a any particular sport once in life, after all

  • by Susan September 20, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Being on my school’s softball team and, for one game, hitting the game winning home run is my favorite memory

  • by Sand September 20, 2010 at 11:49 pm

I never got to participate in team sports but my sister who was on a youth team for one season tells people that her soccer career was cut short due to an injury….as a ten year old!
