When it comes to my children’s safety, there is no compromise. I know the statistics, but it still makes me shudder when I think about the fact that the leading cause of death for children age 3 and older in the United States is motor vehicle accidents (NHTSA). This just shouldn’t be. So while it’s nice to own the hippest stroller or wear my baby in the most comfortable baby carrier, fashion simply does not top the list when it comes to car seats. I want a safe, reliable car seat that will protect my children should something unfortunate occur.
Last fall, I had an opportunity to get a first look at Safety 1st’s Complete Air Convertible Car Seat. Earlier this year, they released their new onBoard 35 Air SE Infant Car Seat. While their Convertible Car Seat is perfectly safe for an infant, I prefer to put babies under a year in an infant car seat. onBoard 35 Air SE Infant Car Seat is a rear-facing car seat, suitable for infants and tots up to 35 pounds. In theory, my 3 year old son could use this (but he’s way too tall!). The point is, there is a much broader weight range, as most infant car seats only accommodate infants up to 20 pounds.
Their new onBoard 35 Air SE Infant Car Seat features Air Protect™ Side Impact Technology, which addresses the fact that 1 in 4 car crashes involving children are side impact collisions. Through the precise release of air, children are shielded from side impact intrusion with Air Protect. This technology immediately reduces crash forces at a child’s most vulnerable spot…their head. While I don’t quite understand the science behind it, it’s important to me that Safety 1st utilized a superior testing methodology to replicate an actual side impact crash. Dorel Juvenile Group, the manufacturer or Safety 1st, collaborated with Kettering University’s Crash Safety Center to develop a new standard for side impact testing. It’s safe to say that I feel confident in Air Protect’s ability to protect my children.
There are some products that are not full testable. A car seat is one such product. To fully test out it’s safety features, I’d have to get into an accident… What I can tell you is my day-to-day experience using it. This is the car seat you purchase when your primary concern is safety. I’m perfectly content with the standard black/grey fabrics, but you do have the option of premium fabrics and customized embroidery if you wish. I should mention that it’s wider than most infant car seats. I only know that because it doesn’t technically fit into my Bumbleride Stroller (I can manage to snap it in front-facing and strap it down, but I would refer to the manufacturer for more information on using it with this particular stroller). It’s also a bit heavier than the car seat I had with my son. Fortunately, I wear my daughter in a baby carrier most of the time.
onBoard 35 Air SE Infant Car Seat offers 17% more leg room than most infant car seats and includes a harness specifically designed to fit premature infants. It features a specially designed Carry Curve handle to offer a more ergonomic way of carrying the car seat. Because it can be used for infants 4-35 pounds, there is a lot of room for adjustment based on your baby. And if you have LATCH, installation is quick and easy. Once the base is installed, you can look at the indicator window on the side of the car seat to make sure it’s sitting at the proper angle for your child’s weight.
Overall, I’ve been quite impressed with Safety 1st and the research that goes into their products. onBoard 35 Air SE Infant Car Seat retails for $179.99-$199.99 (depending on the model selected) and is available at retailers nationwide. For more “safety” information, check out their YouTube Channel.

Looks like a great car seat! We also have the the Complete Air and I really like it on a day to day basis. Luckily, like you pointed out, we haven’t had to fully test it in a car accident, and I hope we never need them, but I really appreciate the safety features.

I am always interested in the safety features on car seats, especially since they’re becoming more advanced. I love that the Air Protect has 2 “lines of defense” in a collision. I’m especially intrigued by the second portion: “In a second layer of defense, Air Protect™ allows air to escape from the headrest: channeling crash energy away from your child, creating more ride down time.”

I like that “Air Protect™ shields children from side impact intrusion and immediately reduces crash forces at the most critical spot: around a child’s head. Air Protect™ does this by extending ride-down, the amount of time it takes to slow a child’s movement in a crash.”

I love how it fits 4lbs babies! Some hospitals make them stay until they are big enough for their carseats! My last one was a 4lb at 5 weeks early and was able to come home, but she had to pass two car seat tests since the car seat was for 6lb babys and up!

The feature I’m most interested in of course, is the Side impact technology. I did find it interesting that it says “With 17% more leg room than most infant car seats and a harness specially designed to fit preemies, the onBoard™35 Air easily accommodates the growing baby in a rear-facing position from a tiny 4 on up to a tall 35 pounds”. I wish I had this car seat when I brought my now 4 week old home. He has his brother’s habd me down car seat and he was very small at barely 5lbs. The car seat did not fit him right. Now that he’s nearly a month old he fits in the seat like a newborn.
