Every morning I start my day off with a cup pot of tea.  Now that I’m pregnant, I’m opting for decaf versions, but I still love my tea!  And thankfully, the benefits are numerous.  Like a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and some cancers.  Tea has also been found to aid in digestion and boost the immune system.  If you’ve ever been to a natural market, you’ve likely noticed the vast amount of teas available for a number of ailments.

October is Fair Trade Month and Santa Cruz Organic has partnered with Choice Organic Tea to use Fair Trade certified tea in two of it’s new beverages.  We had an opportunity to try all of them!  The company offers both iced and sparkling, flavored iced teas. Offered in four flavor options (Lemon, Peppermint, Raspberry, and Mango), “these ready-to-drink, lightly sweetened organic tea blends combine high quality, organic green, white and black tea varieties.”

My husband and I opt to purchase juices and iced teas over sodas and we’ve actually tried these before.  My favorite flavor is the Mango, but they’re all really good.  I try to limit the amount of caffeine I drink (because of the pregnancy), and I didn’t find that these really affected me (I can get jittery with too much caffeine).  They’re not overly sweet, like some teas and I still find that the teas retain their original flavor (i.e. mango, lemon).

The other product we had an opportunity to try was the company’s brand new TeaZers. I have to be honest in saying that neither my husband nor I had ever tried a sparkling iced tea.  TeaZers are simply flavored, carbonated iced teas with a splash of organic juice.  They come in four flavors:  Lemon, Raspberry, Pear, and Passion Fruit.  While I do prefer a “flat” tea, these are definitely an option for people who enjoy soda but would rather opt for a healthier beverage.  Again, they’re not overly sweet but the carbonation is something we had to get used to.

So what does “Fair Trade” mean?  The label “guarantees consumers that strict economic, social and environmental criteria were met in the production and trade of an agricultural product.”  (TransFair USA)  This month, be sure to look for the Fair Trade certified logo on food and handicraft products.
