Colds, flus, SWINE FLU? Ok…with summer coming to an end, I always worry about the dreaded cold and flu season. And this year with the Swine Flu lurking, I’m going to take even further precautions to limit our exposure to this virus. As a nurse, I’m super diligent about ensuring all 3 of us wash our hands regularly. But very often we’re out and about in places where washing hands is not convenient. You will ALWAYS find a small package of antibacterial hand wipes in my purse.
I recently had an opportunity to sample Wet Ones Antibacterial Hands & Face Wipes. In the hospital where I work, we use antibacterial hand gels in between patient contact. It’s actually an acceptable policy on our unit, provided we wash our hands after a certain number of uses/contact. The gels we use in the hospital are very strong and I’m always turned off by their strong alcohol aroma. I like using wipes with my son because I don’t find them to be as strong in odor but they’re still effective against 99.99% of germs. I also like wipes because I can actually get dirt off of my son’s hands (something that you can’t necessarily do with gels). I tend to feel like our hands are cleaner with a wipe and I like that they can be used on the face as well (they’re hypoallergenic). The wipes are also more gentle on the skin. My hands tend to be really dry after a day of using the alcohol-based antibacterial hand gels.
With the school year approaching (or already in session for some), you may want to consider placing a travel-sized pack of Wet Ones in your child’s backpack. You can teach them to use these when soap and water are not readily available, before and after eating, playing, etc. Here are some more tips on keeping your family healthy this season:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and then throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Wash for 20 seconds. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers or antibacterial hand wipes are also effective when soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
If you’re concerned about chemicals and odors (the original does have a mild fragrance to it), you can try the Sensitive variety.
Right now you can visit the site to receive a coupon for $1 off a package of Wet Ones.
Win It! Three of you will win a package of Wet Ones to try out for yourself! Simply leave me a comment with something you and your family do to stay germ-free! In restrooms I use my ” drying my hands” paper towel to open the restroom door when I leave. It’s disgusting but amazing how many people do not wash their hands – yuk! I also wash my hands as soon as I get home after being out of the house.

We wash our hands a lot. When we eat out we are sure to take our anti bacterial liquid with us. Public bathrooms in my opinion don’t always have doors that swing in and out, so you may still pick up germs as you leave the bathroom.

We are actually using the wipes the grocery and discount stores are providing to wipe the cart handles on the buggies. The buggy pusher whether mom, dad, or kid pulls three wipes out at once. One is used to clean the handles on the cart/buggy and one to close the lid on the wipe container, and finally the last one is for the buggy pusher to wipe their own hands, and then throw them in the lidded trash can carefully using the wipes to help so hands don’t come in direct contact with the swinging type lids the stores provide by the cart station.
Another tip I learned from my grandmother long ago is before opening any canned goods, to take a lightly soaped dish towel and wash the can tops and then rinse out the towel and wipe it again with clean water before using the can opener to get the can open. She always said you don’t know where cough or sneeze germs from someone else may have landed and you don’t know if the stocker of these cans washed their hands after using the bathroom. She also said some germs take a while to die, and you don’t know if they’re dead on top of the cans when you pick them up. She was very cautious above food borne illnesses and gastritis upset..

Having a new baby in the house, it’s a necessity to have our home germ free. Small bottles of Purel are hooked to backpacks and diaper bags. Twice a week, everything that is a “touchable” hard surface is sanitized. We keep a small bottle of Clorox anywhere spray to use on shopping carts, baby changing stations, and anywhere else that could need it.

I’ve gotta say that ever since we discovered hand sanitizer, we just can’t live without it — virtually every room in our house has a bottle, and we keep bottles in the car, our bags, etc. It might be turning us all into obsessive compulsives, but at least we’re germ-free!
