For the Aspiring Fashion Designer…

Posted by Caryn Bailey 71 Comments

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Jill W.  Congrats.

I dream one day of having a little girl.  I would love to share with her the things my mom and I shared…stories and songs and hopes and fears.  My mom and I are still best friends.  I have fond memories of us playing all kinds of games.  One of the things we loved to do was play with dolls.  Barbies, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch Kids…it was endless fun and imaginative play.

harumika_logo

If you have a little girl, you may have already heard her pleas for a Harumika.  So what is it?  Here is a little description from the site:

Aspiring fashion designers can achieve “Runway Ready” status, with Harumika – the new dress-form fashion doll.  Already a huge phenomenon in Japan, Harumika lets girls “style their imagination” and easily design attire with colorful fabrics and fashion accessories – all with no sewing required.

FashionsforRunwayShowStopper

The “doll” doesn’t actually have a face and is more like a mannequin. The child chooses a swatch of Harumika fabric and wraps it around the dress form (i.e. mannequin), securing it with the Style Lock System and stylus tool (there is a slit in the back that excess fabric can be pushed into).  Each kit comes with accessories and I this is where children really get to be imaginative.  This is definitely an open-ended activity that moms and daughters would enjoy doing together.

HarumikaDressFormStylingwithHarumika1StylingwithHarumika2PlayPattern

Keeping attune with the digital age, girls can visit the website to upload photos of their favorite designs into their very own “Look Book,” display their designs in their own virtual “Fashion Boutique,” and show off their created looks to all their friends by participating in online fashion runway shows.

Harumika takes conventional doll play and steps it up a notch by encouraging girls to express their individualism, while exposing them to fashion and design.  Harumika was designed for girls over the age of 6 and dolls/accessories can be purchased at Toys R Us, Target, and Walmart.  Starter Kits retail for $10.99 and Accent Sets can be purchased for $5.99.

RunwayShowStopper

Win It! I am giving one of you the doll set I received (it’s brand new in the box).  Since I don’t have a little girl (at least not yet anyway), I want one of you to experience this activity with your daughter.  To enter, head on over to the site and take a look around.  Come back here and leave me a comment with something you liked or learned on the site, and who you would give this to (must be included in your answer to be eligible).  Comments will close on August 24, 2009 at 10 PM PST. One comment per person, please (unless you do the extra credit). US residents only. Duplicates and comments not including the above information will be disqualified. Comments are moderated. If you don’t see your comment in a reasonable amount of time, send me an email. Bloggers and non-bloggers may enter. If you don’t want to leave your email address, please be sure to check back for my announcement on the winner. Please note that winners must respond within 48 hours of being announced/contacted or another winner will be drawn.

As strange as this may seem, I like that the form has no face. This means the toy is open to the interpretation of the individual…it can be any race, any color, anything the child wants it to represent. I would use this to play with Tosha. She’s just starting to get into Barbie dolls and she’s very artistic and creative. She drew a larger-than-life penguin on her parents’ wall. With a spider next to it. With a Sharpie.
