Just When You Thought Spring Cleaning Was Over…A Seventh Generation Giveaway!

April 1, 2009 by Caryn

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Kate.  Congrats!

Yes…it’s true.  Our Spring Cleaning Event has ended.  April Fools!  I have a few more cleaning/organization posts for products that were added in at the last moment.   So, on Rockin’ Mama we’ll have one more week of encore posts and giveaways before the big event that is coming up very soon (more deets to come soon!).  Right now,  there are giveaways open for entries and winners will be chosen by the weekend (I have to tally all of your extra credit entries and verify with Tanya and Amanda).

I couldn’t very well end this event without sharing with you one of my favorite companies that will help you get your entire home clean naturally.  I have had the pleasure of working with Seventh Generation in the past, but even before we started working together, I was using their products.  That is because, first and foremost, I identify with their philosophy:

Seventh Generation is committed to becoming the world’s most trusted brand of authentic, safe, and environmentally-responsible products for a healthy home.  The company derives its name from the Great Law of the Iroquois that states, “In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.”

One of the core characteristics of Seventh Generation is it’s transparency.  The company is committed to helping consumers like you and I, make informed choices.  If you have a question, you can expect to find the answer on the bottle or package, on their site, in their 7Gen News, or in their printed material.  They don’t use words like “natural” or “hypoallergenic” without backing those statements with fact.  They go so far as to list their Material Safety Data Sheets on their website.  How is that for transparency?

Evey product that I’ve used from the company has been effective and safe for both my family and the environment.  You may recall that I blogged about how I came across Seventh Generation when my son was suffering from horrible diaper rashes.  Seventh Generation was my last resort before going to cloth diapers (which there is nothing wrong with but doesn’t fit with our lifestyle).  Within about a week his diaper rashes were getting better and better until they just went away.  But I’m not here to talk to you about diapers am I?

7thgen_kit2_1

I had the pleasure of reviewing the company’s entire line of cleaning products in their Living Home Starter Kit including the following:

  • Natural Glass and Surface cleaner
  • Natural All Purpose Cleaner
  • Toilet Bowl Cleaner
  • Shower Cleaner
  • Tub & Tile Cleaner
  • Kitchen Cleaner
  • (2) Natural Paper Towels – 120 Count
  • Seventh Generation Reusable Tote Bag

The products are amazing.  They’re safe and effective and I love that I can clean with my son in the same room.  I love that I don’t have to sacrifice effectiveness for safety.  I love that I don’t have to ventilate, wear a mask, don gloves, or otherwise suit up for a cleaning venture.  The cleaning agents are plant-derived, non-toxic, and biodegradable.  Many are also hypoallergenic.  If you’re looking for a “natural clean,” I highly recommend Seventh Generation.  I feel good about using products that were created by a company who strives to save natural resources, reduce pollution, and overall make the world (and our homes) a safer place.  If you would like specific information on how any of the above products work, just leave me a comment and I’ll answer your questions!  Maybe you want to know which is best for soap scum or mold or windows…I’d love to share my thoughts and experiences with you.

Win It! One of you very very lucky readers is going to win a Seventh Generation Living Home Starter Kit which includes each of the products listed above.  Again…I’m going to make you work just a little for this one!  First, head on over to the site and look around.  Then come back and leave a two-part comment indicating something you learned on the site that I didn’t mention in my review AND how you’re going green this spring!  Comments will close on April 15, 2009 at 10 PM PST.  One comment per person, please. US residents only. Duplicates and comments not including the above information will be disqualified. Comments are moderated. If you don’t see your comment in a reasonable amount of time, send me an email. Bloggers and non-bloggers may enter. If you don’t want to leave your email address, please be sure to check back for my announcement on the winner. Please note that winners must respond within 48 hours of being announced/contacted or another winner will be drawn.

Want an extra entry? Do any or all of the following and receive an extra entry for each one.

Be sure to leave me a separate comment for each additional entry.

I can’t believe they have Chlorine-Free Organic Cotton Tampons! I’ve been intrigued by the idea of something more natural for fem care, but didn’t really know what to do. What am I doing to be more green this year???? Let me tell you! I’m transitioning my home to Kleen Kanteen bottles. No more cases of water for us! And, thanks to these blogs, I’ve found Skoy cloths. I’ve ordered some and plan to never buy a paper towel again. I’ve also been transitioning to green cleaning. All our cleaning products are now green (I make them). As soon as I finish up my laundry detergent and dish detergents, I’m transitioning them, too.

So far this year, they have “saved” 307341 trees. I am going greener by increasing the amount of my own recycling and encouraging my employer to set up boxes for recycling of office paper (envelopes, memos, etc).

Part 1: On their website, there is a feature called “Ask Science Man”. It’s way cool. There are all kinds of questions, ranging from “Is chlorine in tap water harmful?” to “What are dioxins?”

Part 2: This Spring, I am going Green in small ways. I am no longer going to use paper towels during Spring Cleaning, and no longer buy disposable plates, cutlery, and napkins for our outdoor events.

I didn’t know that they sold Chlorine-Free Maxi Pads (or that such a thing existed). I knew about Chrlorine-Free Diapers and how important they are, but I must have missed the memo about the pads. It is something that definitely interests me.
We are pretty green over here in the Webster household (mentrual pads not withstanding), but we are being forced to make a major purchase soon. Our bed is almost 50 years old (I kid you not–it’s gross), and it has finally gasped its last breath. We will be purchasing a new bed, and we are going to research all the “green” alternatives out there so that we can make an informed, eco-friendly decision.

I looked around the site and learned about water conservation AND (now, I did not know this) that many faucets have aerators which mix air into the water to reduce usage! That’s pretty kewl and I’m going to check all my faucets to see that they have the aerators! BTW – I’m going to tell my Green-Inclined daughter about this site… she is always looking for better and better ways to learn about green living!

    29 Lisa on April 2nd, 2009 12:58 pm

    1) On their website, there is a coupon for $1 off any laundry products.
    2) I’ve already started going green through recycling and decreasing energy usage, but I’m still trying to wean my family off plastic water bottles. So that’s my goal this year.

    3) I’ve also entered the other two giveaways.

    30 Mary D on April 2nd, 2009 12:59 pm

Here is part 2 of the two-part comment entry (hope I’m doing this correctly LOL) :
To go Green this Spring I am going to not only increase my efforts to recycle every scrap I can, but ALSO to REDUCE the amount of materials that comes INTO my home! And I am so glad people are finally recognizing the importance of livng in balance with nature!

    31 Leslie M. on April 2nd, 2009 2:51 pm

I learned what Dioxins are From the Seventh Generation Website!

Dioxins are one of the most toxic chemicals known. Dioxin is a general term that describes a group of hundreds of chlorine-containing chemicals that are highly persistent in the environment. The most toxic dioxin is 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). The major sources of dioxins in the environment are waste-burning incinerators. Dioxins are generated when chlorine-containing materials in the waste stream (such as polyvinylchloride (PVC) plastics) are burned in medical and municipal incinerators.

How am I going green this spring? I am recycling, planning my car trips to use LESS Gas, buying green cleaning products, and looking for products with LESS packaging! NOW, I always bring tote bags with me when I go food shopping too! I also eat a vegetarian diet which is Eco friendly!

Currently Seventh Generation uses sodium lauryl ether sulfate, or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), in our liquid laundry and liquid dish detergents. This is a naturally-derived chemical that comes from palm kernel oil and coconut oil. (Petroleum is used in the ethoxylation process.

I am actively taking along my reusable totes to not use so many plastic bags, in a start to be more green this spring. I also use those totes for yard sale visits & department stores too, not only grocery!

I learned that Non-chlorine bleaches are typically comprised of low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide or percarbonate which are able to kill many common bacteria, fungi and viruses. Non-chlorine bleaches are capable of reducing the quantity of microorganisms on laundry, although the ability to kill microorganisms when diluted in a wash cycle decreases antimicrobial efficacy.[1-2] For the best results with chlorine free bleach, pre-treat any highly contaminated items.
How I am going green this Spring is I am not going to to use harsh chemicals to clean and am doing away with bleach for the laundry and other cleaning.

    1. The Seventh Generation website is just jammed packed full of a wide range of very useful information. I read and read through all 42 of their suggested Ways to Save Energy. I learned that I SHOULD Use the A/C IN OUR CAR. In today’s aerodynamically designed vehicles, the drag created by open windows generally uses up more additional gasoline than the air conditioner. Interesting, now I will feel no guilt for keeping COOL in the car all summer long, great, great tips here folks, I suggest reading them!

    2. We are going green this spring by keep cool drinking from our own personal hydration vessel. I purchased one for every member of the family so we are no longer purchasing any bottled water. I bet we were throwing away over 2 dozen plastic bottles a week and now none, zip, zero, nada! It may seem like a small change, but we are working on incorporating more into our lifestyle everyday! I could list the things we are already doing, and they are pretty much what others have listed too!

I’m impressed with the amount of care they take in choosing ingredients for their products. The part of the site where they discuss how they are moving from one preservative to another on the off chance the one they were using could be carcinogenic is informative – a lot of companies don’t sweat over stuff they use in such low concentrations.

Around our house we are trying to switch to greener cleaning options. We already swapped the lightbulbs for compact fluorescent ones and we’ve gotten really good about bringing our own bags to the store and using alternative transportation most of the time for commuting, so switching to greener cleaners is the next big step.

No harsh fumes with the toilet bowl cleaner. That’s good! And, we’re growing our own vegetable garden this year.

I learned that I need to throw away all of my aerosal air fresheners. They are full of toxic chemicals. Yikes!

My lawn is sort of my baby. I love to have plush green grass that people comment on. Weeds are my enemy. This year, I’ve pledged to care for my lawn “green” all season. No sprinklers, no scary fertilizers, limited lawn mowing. We’ll see if I can make it!

I never realized there was chlorine in Maxi-pads or diapers, but since they make it without, regular ones must have it. We will be going green by not using our dryer anymore, but hanging our clothes out instead.

I am improving my “greenness” by changing to CFL lights and I am searching for the best organic products for cleaning. That means I need to try a lot of different ones to find the one I like best.
