Let’s Get This Potty Party Started Published on Monday, February 2, 2009 by

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Becca.  Congratulations!

Welcome to my first official blog party! I hope you find the series informative. I definitely welcome your comments and advice. Feel free to agree or even disagree (gasp!)! Most of all, have fun! Potty training can be difficult, messy, and frustrating for both you and your child. I hope that with some of the resources I give you throughout the series, you’ll find it just a little easier to embark or continue down this “journey.” For inspiration, read Stephanie’s potty training story

And for a more serious look at potty training from a dad’s perspective, check out this video

To start with, let’s talk about the basics. One of my very first questions (besides how in the world do I do this?) was, “Do I REALLY need a potty?” So I did a little “test.” A few months ago my husband and I started bringing our son into the bathroom with us. We’d even let him “flush” the toilet (although that behavior had to be curbed when he started flushing the toilet over and over!). One day we decided to “try” to put him on the big potty. His protests were loud and clear. He shook his head…he clung to us for dear life….he said NO! He was definitely afraid of the toilet. And rightly so…it’s big and loud and things disappear when they go in. So we decided that a toddler-sized potty was necessary if we were going to start potty training before he went to junior high school.

Any potty on the market is perfectly capable of being utilized for the purpose of…well…going potty. You’ve got your potties with all the bells and whistles, your simple, no-frills potty, your royal potty, and your eco-friendly potty. But my favorite potty is Boon’s Potty Bench.

There are so many reasons why I like this potty. It’s modern and vibrant enough to keep my son interested, yet not too much of a distraction. While we want potty training to be fun, it should be separate from play time (in our opinion). It’s also very sturdy. Some of the potties I’ve seen at Target or Walmart feel so light and unstable. The Potty Bench functions as both a step stool (one less thing to crowd the bathroom purchase), capable of holding up to 300 pounds, and a potty. And I can close the lid to keep out those potty odors! It has two side storage spaces to hold toilet paper, wipes, training pants/pull-ups, antibacterial hand gel, and anything else your child may need to go potty. The Potty Bench also comes with a soft, removable deflector shield to keep everything that needs to be in the potty…in the potty! Cleaning ANY potty is never the highlight of my day, however, the Potty Bench features a pull-out drawer to make cleaning up easier. The Potty Bench retails for $34.99 but I’ve seen it on Amazon.com for $29.99.

Remember to stop by every day this week and next (we’ll take a potty break over the weekend) for more potty tips and product picks.

Win It! One of you will win a Potty Bench of your own, courtesy of Boon. Head on over to the site and take a look around. Come back here and leave me a comment with ANOTHER Boon product you’d love to have. For fun, leave your best potty training tip! Comments will close on February 16, 2009 at 10 pm PST. I like the orange catch bowl. This could help keep my little one from making such a mess.

I tried forever to get my oldest to potty train. In the end what helped was going on vacation and watching his cousin go. I really don’t look forward to this again, but with a potty like this, maybe it won’t take so long!

  • by Kristie February 2, 2009 at 11:21 am

I love the Boon Animal Bags!
As for a tip-I was able to potty train my daughter by just letting her run around without a diaper on and left her potty chair in her play area, so she could go when she needed to. There were only a few accidents the first day and she has been doing great ever since! (With an occasional accident, of course, but that’s to be expected.)

  • by Cat @ 3 Kids and Us February 2, 2009 at 11:40 am

Oh boy, we’re heading into the potty training phase with our daughter now and could use this. I also love the Bug Pod by Boon.

My only tip…don’t force it on your child. It only causes frustration for the both of you.

Another Boon product I love is the Boon Animal Bag and my best potty training tip is to have patience….took me what seemd like forever to train my son, the one thing I wish I would have had is a bit more patience.

  • by LT February 2, 2009 at 6:24 pm

I am in love with their animal bags! I would love to have the Otto Animal bag. Potty training tip? Be patient, if they aren’t ready, they aren’t ready and pushing sometimes causes setbacks!

I love the Boon Flair pedestal highchair in white/orange. As for a potty training tip, be patient, train when your little one is ready not when you are ready. Thanks for the chance to win!

Thanks so much for linking to my “potty training story.” Potty training really has been a positive experience for us overall. I think it’s important to have a laid-back approach and to have fun…your child will pick up on your cues. :)

The Boon Potty Bench really is fantastic. It’s modern and sturdy and I love that it “doubles” as a step stool.

The BabyBjorn Potty Chair is also an excellent option. It’s simple and easy-to-clean and matches any bathroom’s decor…

  • by Sherry Abrams February 2, 2009 at 9:39 pm

The modern flair high chair is my favorite.

  • by Stephanie V February 2, 2009 at 10:48 pm

Love the otto animal bag too. Don’t have any advice yet. Potty training is approaching fast for my little boy and I’m a little scared.

  • by KL February 3, 2009 at 3:01 am

This would be so perfect for us! We were just going to start training our two year old soon and he is our first so I don’t have any tips other than one my mom told me. She had a small bucket of very inexpensive toys that we could only play with when we sat on our potty. She said it worked great! I’d have the suction bowl by boon and LOVE it. I’d really like to try their animal storage bags!

My son didn’t like to stand on the little stool so he could pee.
So, I had him sit facing the toilet tank until he was tall enough to stand and spray into the bowl.

Either the frog or bug pod to help organize our bath toys!

Tip: If you do the treat system, give 1 tiny treat if they make with you telling them to, 2 if they take the initiative :)

  • by Celeste February 3, 2009 at 11:26 am

Love the Bug Pod…a ‘reward chart’ can work well.

  • by Lachelle February 3, 2009 at 11:26 am

We are just ready to start the potty training stuff and my daughter is terrified of the toilet also!

I like the Boon animal bag. I really need something like that!

  • by Laura February 3, 2009 at 12:08 pm

Love the Splat Ring Toss toy for bath time!

I don’t have any potty training tips yet – we haven’t started yet – but I’m absorbing tips from everyone else for when the day comes!

  • by Desta February 3, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Wow! So many cool products. I love all their toddler eating solutions, but I think my favorite thing is the giant bean bag to throw your stuffed animals in. Definitely cool! My ONLY potty training tip is to wait until your kid is ready. Mine isn’t yet, so that’s all I can say. destanation at gmail.com

  • by Jennifer Monteiro February 3, 2009 at 4:50 pm

I love the Flair Highchair. When I was training my first child, he got 3 m&ms everytime he used the potty.

  • by megan February 3, 2009 at 5:28 pm

I love the animal bags. We could use those at my house.

  • by Jennifer February 3, 2009 at 6:06 pm

For me, it is a tossup between the Frog and Lady Bug Pods and the Oval Animal Bag. They would both come in handy in our home.

My best potty training tip is to give it time. We worked with our daughter, didn’t apply pressure but encouraged her to go. Literally, she woke up one day and decided that was the day she was only going to wear big girl underwear.

I’ve been eyeing their Flo faucet cover for a while now – what a great idea! And it has a bubble bath maker attached! And pottytraining tip – if you can stomach it, I let my kiddies go bottomless to help them recognize the sensation they have right before they pee, so they can make the association. They learned really fast! Best of luck to you!

  • by Dianna February 3, 2009 at 7:52 pm

I Boon all things! The Flo is one of my top picks and of course the Flair in pink….and yes the potty chair. I’m potty training for the 3rd time and my advice is patience. They will do it when their ready not when your ready!

Potty tip? Don’t rush things and be very patient!

  • by Crystal Arcand February 4, 2009 at 10:44 am

I love the frog pod, it is the best for scooping up and containing all the tub toys. My best potty training tip is to be patient. My son is taking a long time to get the concept, he makes progress but then loses interest. It is OK, just be patient. Have plenty of book and activities handy for all the time you will spend waiting while they sit on the potty, stay upbeat and positive, and don’t give up.

  • by Therese February 4, 2009 at 9:44 pm

The orange catch bowl is great.
My tip is just to be patient and don’t try to traain a toddler that is not interested-you will just be frustrated.

  • by Aura February 4, 2009 at 9:49 pm

I love boon, especially the flair highchairs (gosh, I hope to win one). My twins just turned 1 today, so I have some time before potty training. We’ll definately need more than one potty when we do start and I like the low profile of the boon potty. For my older son I sent him to a preschool to potty train him, definately the easiest way to do it.

I’d love the flo. It looks like it would be wonderful for washing hair. The girls get a bit scared of the shower head when I rinse their hair and I hate the cup method.

The boon potty bench would be wonderful to have.

My best tip is patience. I’d like to have splat also.

I love the Flair Pedestal Highchair with Pneumatic Lift

Potty tip: Put cheerios in the toilet for your boy child to aim at if you are the mom only at home who will teach him.

We’re just about to start potty training with my daughter. We have one potty seat, but I’d love to win another so we can have one in the main floor bathroom, as well as her bathroom upstairs.

The Boon product I’d most like to try is the Squirt. I learned about it right after my daughter was out of the rice cereal and pureed baby food stage. But I’ve been so curious about how well it works, I can’t wait to try it with my son in another four or five months.

  • by Becca February 14, 2009 at 7:46 pm

I’ve added your blog to my google reader.

  • by Erica G February 15, 2009 at 11:09 am

I would love to try the squirt spoon. I don’t have any tips yet. We will be potty training for the first time soon.

  • by Paula Harmon February 15, 2009 at 2:22 pm

Boon product I’d like to try: the Flo. Potty tip: save your toilet paper rolls when they are almost out. Then when your little one is training, they can have their own roll (without un-rolling the full rolls in the bathroom). Before I did this tip, my kids would unroll whole rolls of toilet paper.

I love the Trio Animal Bag. It’s storage and a funky seat.

  • by reva skie February 15, 2009 at 5:44 pm

You don’t have to leave the potty seat in the bathroom. Put it close to where they play often, on some hard surface flooring. In sight, in mind.

One of the Boon products I would love to have is the stuffed animal storage and soft seat. I never knew anything like that existed, but it’s the perfect way to get the stuffed animals under control (how do those things proliferate so??) and provide a really cool place to sit (which little ones love). I think it’s a great idea for a product.

I’d love to try the Frog Pod! So cute, and I’m in the process of doing my daughter’s Bathroom in Frogs!

  • by April E February 15, 2009 at 10:29 pm

I LOVE Boon, The Flo for the bathtub facuet is great and the bath toy pods. And don’t get me started on all of there great feeding wear. I really wanted this potty when I was shopping for our first potty. But at Babies R Us they said they no longer carried it and I could not find it anywhere where I wouldent have to ship it. I would love to have this potty to help my daughter take the big step to being a big girl. Oh and for my tip:
Make it fun and let it all hapen naturally, but don’t wait so long that it seems hard to get anywhere. My opinion introduce before they are 2 and see how it goes from there. It is a learning process all around.
    Thanks

I love their highchairs. My best potty training tip is to realize that each child is different and to be patient with the child.

  • by Lorrie Turner February 16, 2009 at 1:19 am

I like the Flair highchair. This is the first time I’ve seen your products.
I have a 9 month old daughter, and I’ll be needing a potty chair soon.

I had boys before. My last was hard to potty train. I’d have to say be consistent. Sometimes, you just have to stop using the pull-ups and get down to business….no matter how many messes.

  • by Jomama on a Llama February 16, 2009 at 7:02 am

Love the new high chair. So chic!

  • by xenia February 16, 2009 at 8:14 am

Boon has such neat products, I’d also like to try the Flo because I think my daughter would love it in the bath.

We’re just about getting to potty training time and I’m partially looking forward to one less child in diapers while also partially dreading the actual potty training itself. The main tip I’ve been told is to have something small and yummy like m & m’s on hand as a reward, but so far telling my daughter she’ll get candy or a cookie isn’t enticing her into wanting to try going without a diaper. Maybe the potty bench would get her excited!

    Thanks!

I love the Flair high chair of course! I would love to win this for my daughter. :-) Don’t have any potty training advice because we’re not quite there yet.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

The boon snack ball would be great for traveling. My potty training tip is NO PULLUPS…go straight to big boy or big girl underwear and don’t look back. You will clean up some messes but they won’t last long.
