For years we've known that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The very meaning of the word, when broken down, is simply to "break the fast." Have you ever thought about how long that stint is from dinner to breakfast? In our home, it's as many as 12 hours! For children, who depend on the regular intake of nutrient-rich foods, the negative effects c... Read More »

Because I grew up eating foods that were prepared with little to no salt (thanks to my father's incredible cooking), I learned to substitute spices in place of sodium to create flavor. During those early years when my husband and I were newly married, he often stated that my cooking was a bit bland without the addition of salt. With a little experimentation and comp... Read More »

One of the things I'm passionate about is eating and feeding my family fresh, wholesome, sustainable foods. I strive to keep packaged, processed foods to a minimum, opting for organic, locally-grown foods that aren't shelf-stable. I'v... Read More »

It's almost March and our resolve to cook *most* of our meals (as opposed to going out) has been mostly successful. Â However, I am personally beginning to lose motivation, since I'm rotating through the same meals each week. Â My husband has always been the more creative cook, conjuring up everything from Thai Chicken and Rice to a three course French Fondue meal.

One of the changes we've made over the years is to eat healthier. But what exactly does that mean? In our house, we limit consumption of processed foods, and opt for more natural foods like lean meats and fish, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. We limit our intake of sodium, sugar, fats, preservatives and artificial ingredients. Do we eat sweets and drink s... This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to the Winner, Nad (#28)!
Several years ago, I decided to omit all white, processed foods from my diet. I replaced white bread, flour tortillas, and saltine crackers with their whole grain alternatives. According to The Journal of Nutrition, "higher intakes of cereal fiber, particularly from whole-grain sources, are associate... Read More »

As you can imagine, I receive a lot of press releases, story ideas, and general information via email about companies and brands. Maybe I should start a weekly column. Anyway, I can't possibly post about them all, but every now and then, I receive something that I find interesting that I think you may benefit from!
Since we're talking about going back to school... Read More »

Today is my son's first "official" day of preschool. But he's been attending all summer long and it's been going really well. The preschool my son attends serves lunch. So twice a week, I don't have to worry about packing anything for him (for the most part, anyway). On the one hand, it's nice not to have to worry about packing him a lunch. However, I'm a he... Every thing I read, reinforces how important breakfast is for kids and adults. More energy, better concentration, and weight loss are just some of the many benefits of eating a healthy, balanced breakfast. I know I've been feeling "off" the last several weeks before eating breakfast (hence the fainting episode last week). One of the things we as a family eat a... Do you give your kids juice? I would love some feedback from you. I have struggled with the answer to this question for a long time. My pediatrician simply told me at one point that it wasn't necessary and that if I didn't have it in the house, it wouldn't even be an option open for discussion with my toddler. However, the reality is that he really likes juice... My son loves his milk. I actually have to work to get him to drink other liquids because he would drink milk all day if I let him. For some parents, getting their children to drink milk is a struggle. And according to a study conducted by the national Milk Council (source Mom Central), more than 1000 moms across the U.S. reported fruit drinks and slushies among th... Read More »

Since we all know how much I love to cook, I won't belabor the point. My husband has learned to accept it and we just deal with it. On the nights he comes home late from work, I'm stuck having to fend for myself. Now it used to be I'd just order out. But eating out gets really expensive (in fact, it is a huge monthly expense we're actively working to reduce).Â... Read More »
