All About Baby: Your Baby Can Read
February 1, 2010
I started reading to my son when he was a baby. I often questioned myself, but did “just as the books told me to.” Out of all that time we’ve spent together, books open wide and well-read, my son has developed an incredible love for reading. Naptime and bedtime routines are not complete without books. Our little girl is also getting exposed to reading early since she hears me reading to her brother every day.

My son is 2 1/2 and I’m just now looking for more formal programs to further his intellectual development. I recently had an opportunity to preview Robert Titzer’s Early Language Development System called Your Baby Can Read. If you’ve watched preschool television with your children, then you’ve likely seen the ads for this program. Contrary to what is taught in schools today, Dr. Titzer believes that babies and toddlers can read much earlier than what was originally thought. You’ve probably heard that a baby’s brain develops rapidly (90% during the first five years of life). The infant and toddler years are ideal for language acquisition. According to Dr. Titzer, children who learn to read at an early age perform better in school, are more likely to stay in school, and have more self-esteem.
Dr. Titzer developed this program to help parents seize this window of learning opportunity in their young babies and toddlers. He believes that starting early is advantageous and found that babies and toddlers have an easier time learning spoken, receiptive, foreign and written language during this time period. According to Dr. Titzer, “the earlier the child is taught to read the better they will read and the more likely they will enjoy it.”
My initial thought was…how can my 2 1/2 year old (let alone a baby) learn how to read? But I was so intrigued by the concept that I wanted to try the program out with my son. We met Dr. Titzer at a baby fair in Orange County last year. He went through several of the flash cards with my son (who was about 2 at the time) and in just 10 or 15 minutes, my son was remembering (dare I say reading?) the words on the cards.
There are several components to the program including DVD’s (geared towards both the child and the parent), word cards, and books (geared towards both the parent and the child). I started with the DVD to introduce my son to the words before moving to the word cards. Here is a little video of him interacting with the DVD:
The Parents’ Guide is very informative and provides both the background and guidelines for using this system. There are also numerous tips on how to make the most of the system with your child. I truly think I should have started the program earlier (which I will do with our baby girl) as I felt like some of the content was a bit on the young side for my son.
So the question of the day is…Can your son read? My answer right now is not yet. However, as we work on this program I can see my son starting to retain the information on the “how to” of reading. Repetition is a key factor in the program and I like the various ways of learning incorporated into it. The Starter DVD we received is a bit young for my son but he still enjoys it and we still need to work on the 20 words presented on it.
My last question about the program was how long it takes to see results. There are various levels to the program, each taking about 2 months to complete. I found that my son recognized the words easily but had more difficulty “reading” them. For more information on the program, just visit their site. You can do a 30-day trial for $14.95 (something that is actually quite handy since the entire system retails for $199.95).

All About Baby: Zootie Patootie
January 31, 2010
Little girls are so much easier to shop for than little boys. I remember going into store after store in the mall, in search of an outfit for an event, holiday, or other special occasion…particularly when my son was a baby. There is no shortage of adorable, little-girl themed clothing in stores today.
Zootie Patootie is one such boutique offering fashionable mix and match ensembles for girls and boys. If you were to shop at any number of stores offering baby clothes, you’d find no shortage of onesies. But it’s very rare to find an entire outfit with a onesie. Zootie Patootie offers complete, matching outfits, sans pants. This mother/daughter team started the company after struggling to find children’s clothing that actually matched.
At Zootie Patootie, you’ll find leg warmers in place of pants. Pair them with a long-sleeved onesie and a flower-topped hat and you’ve got yourself the most fashion-forward baby around. I chose the Groovy Heart long-sleeved onesie ($26), Pink Sunshine leg warmers ($12) and a light pink hat ($20). The hat and leg warmers come in one size, so they were a bit big on our daughter. But I think it’s neat to be able to mix and match onesies, leg warmers, and hats. You could get a few of each and mix and match to get numerous outfits. I like that the site suggests coordinating pieces.
I had never thought about using leg warmers in place of pants, however, I really like the convenience of not having to take pants off in order to change our little girl’s diaper. If you’ve got a crawler or a new walker, leg warmers are ideal for protecting their knees and preventing tears and fading on their pants. They’re a cotton/polyester, spandex blend so they’re warmer that you would think. I only wish they came in different sizes because they were definitely big on our little girl. I would say the same thing about the hats. You can purchase the same sets for boys, although I had never heard of putting leg warmers on a boy.
The onesies are 100% cotton and are super soft and cozy. The company offers short and long-sleeved versions and they’re available in sizes 0-3 months up to 12-18 months. The entire outfit is adorable, complete with the flowered hat. However, my children were never fond of hats (my daughter screams when we try to put one on her) so I’m content to mix and match the leg warmers and onesies. For more information, just visit their site.

All About Mama: Second Base
January 24, 2010
As a mom, I’m very conscious of the clothing I wear. I’m definitely more modest these days, but I have a lot of items from my younger years that are stylish enough to continue wearing. Pregnancy and nursing have changed my body in ways I never imagined, which makes dressing modestly a bit of challenge.
One of the fashion tips I held onto during pregnancy and now while I’m nursing, is to layer. Many companies offer layering attire that will help prolong the amount of time you can wear your “normal” clothes and save you money in the long run (because you don’t have to purchase an entire maternity or nursing wardrobe). While I did purchase several maternity items during both pregnancies, I limited my purchases of specialty nursing wear (mostly for cost purposes).

Second Base is a company that offers affordable, stylish, and modest demi-camisoles to help give you a bit more coverage. I have a LOT of tops that looked appropriate before I got pregnant (the first time) but should no longer be worn as they are. We all know what happens when a woman nurses. Their demi-camisoles, which come in four different styles, provide just the right coverage without adding bulk or bunching around the waistline. The product is ingenious. Rather than layering with full tank tops (which tend to roll up on me), I can wear a lightweight demi-camisole that provides coverage where I need it. Here are some of my favorite features:
a. The fabric (micro modal / spandex) is thin enough not to be an obvious layering piece while still providing adequate coverage
b. The demi-camisoles are affordable (RV $29) and come in a variety of colors
c. They’re comfortable and breathable (Once it’s on, I don’t even notice it’s there).
d. Some of the styles offer bra-strap coverage while others have thinner straps for wearing with dresses and more formal attire
e. They can be used with dresses, low cut tops, tank tops, and button down shirts
Second Base’s demi-camisoles come in four different styles:
Sarah: Classic cami silhouette with 1/4″ adjustable straps
Meredith: Wider straps to cover the bra and a higher back for more modesty
Marlo: Styled after the men’s tank tops (racer back)
Brittany: Resembles the Sarah with a 1 3/4″ lace trim at neckline

Whether you need coverage for a fancy dress or a simple tank top, you’ll find that Second Base’s demi-camisoles are ideal for layering without being obvious. The Meredith and Sarah styles are available in 1X, 2X, and 3X. The Marlo and Brittany styles are available in sizes 30A to 38 E. For more information or to purchase a demi-camisole, just visit their website. Right now you’ll save 20% with the code “ROCKIN”

All About Baby: minui Handysitt
January 21, 2010
I never imagined the baby and toddler stuff would consume our home. Despite the fact that I told everyone not to buy us much more than a few outfits, we’ve still managed to accumulate a lot of gear…gear that takes up a lot of space in our home. I’ve tried to eliminate the duplicates and utilize smaller, space-saving options when possible.
When my son was a baby, we were given a portable high chair. It was great for toting to the grandparents’ house, on trips with my husband for business, and into restaurants. The only problem was that it was bulky and didn’t transport well. What a stark contrast compared to the minui Handysitt seating system. Designed for babies and children ages 6 months to 5 years old, the minui Handysitt seating system can be used as a high chair, chair for older children, and step stool.
Even before I lived in Europe, I was partial to European-made products. I remember walking the streets of Edinburgh as mothers pushed their babies in prams. Wasn’t it just a few years ago that strollers with bassinets (i.e. prams) were showing up at trendy U.S. baby boutiques? Europeans have a flair for style and design. And their products are backed by quality craftsmanship and high safety standards.
This European-made high chair gleans inspiration from the Danes. The company was started by two men in Denmark looking for a safe, portable high chair. The minui Handysitt seating system is now sold in 25 countries across the world.
The seating system, although not complicated to set-up or use, involves several aspects. You start with the Portable Seat which comes fully assembled. It’s a wooden high chair built with FSC-certified birch and steel. Used alone, this makes a compact, portable high chair that can be used with *most* chairs safely. Here is a little video describing how it works, from the site:
The portable seat comes assembled and includes a safety guard (designed for use with children under the age of 3). If you have a younger child, you might want to consider investing in either the baby cushion or basic cushion. We received the baby cushion, which I think makes the seat more comfortable for children. My son isn’t the speediest eater and spends a lot of time in his high chair, so a cushion is a requisite for us. Some children (like my son) do not like to be restrained, despite the fact that they need to be protected from falling out. My son was not a fan of the safety guard, and thankfully we received a 3-point harness with the seat. While I appreciate the range of accessories offered, they’re all sold separately. You can pick and choose which accessories you want to make the seat most comfortable for your child. The two accessories I’d like to complete this seat include the Travel Bag (so I can put everything neatly inside and carry it with me on trips and such) and the StandAlone legs. The StandAlone legs allow the portable seat to be used as a floor chair (my son and I would LOVE this).

I’ve always preferred wooden high chairs to plastic ones. Wood is much more complimentary to our home decor, is sturdier, and safer (I don’t have to worry about BPA). The minui Handysitt portable high chair is stylish, compact, and offers children the opportunity to eat at the table with parents. At only 5 pounds, I would readily take this with me to restaurants and overnight trips.

New for the company is the expansion of their seating system to include a chair. When you combine the minui HandySitt Chair and Portable Seat, the result is a freestanding high chair. The chair by itself is a stylish seat for older children and a sturdy step stool. It’s not available yet, but I hear by the end of the month you’ll be able to purchase it.
The portable seat ($129.95) and chair ($169.95) are definitely an investment. However, the seat and chair are crafted well and designed to be used until your child is 5 years old. It’s really the only chair you would need for your baby, toddler, child. For information about where the seat is sold, visit their website.

All About Baby: Dozy Dolphin On The Go by Cloud B
January 18, 2010
When my son was a baby, he had a lot of fussy moments. He didn’t sleep through the night until I stopped breastfeeding (at almost 15 months) and to this day he still wakes up every now and then. I tried most things people suggested…routines and schedules, books, etc. But I was determined not to let him cry it out, so my husband and I had our share of sleepless nights.
One of the things I did was purchase a few of Cloud B’s Sleep Sheep & Friends. My son had (and still has) Sleep Sheep, Twilight Turtle, and Lavender Lab. The company offers a line of products designed to help your child sleep easier. Cloud B partnered with a panel of experts to develop quality products that “help babies sleep and simplify parents’ lives.” This “advisory board,” comprised of pediatricians and sleep specialists, ensures that all of the company’s products are functional and safe.

The company uses sounds, sights, and smells designed to help babies and tots get and stay asleep. Our baby girl received an adorable little Dozy Dolphin On The Go, designed “to help recreate sleep routines with familiar sounds while away from home.” He (or she?) makes a variety of oceanic (and dolphin-like) sounds and is made of a soft, cozy bamboo fabric. The goal is to help children sleep away from home. Here are some of Dozy’s features:
Plays four, water-based sounds including dolphins playing (stirs imagination), whale songs (relaxation), tranquil melody (promotes restful sleep), and ocean waves (calming).
Offers two sleep timer options (23 and 45 minutes)
Includes a Dozy Dolphin story and adoption certificate
Being the green mom that I am, I am partial to the company’s use of hypoallergenic bamboo. Bamboo is grown without fertilizers or pesticides, is the most renewable source on the planet, and is 100% biodegradable. It’s also antibacterial and antifungal.
The companies “on the go” friends, are smaller and much easier to tote. You can easily velcro Dozy to a stroller or car seat. The part of the dolphin that plays sound (it’s like a little box) velcros in and my son has figured out how to take it out. I think my son is having more fun with it than my daughter at this point in time. I find the sounds to be soothing, my favorite being the ocean waves.
My son always liked the smell of Lavender Lab and Twilight Turtle’s lights. He wasn’t particularly fond of Sleep Sheep (I think the noises were unfamiliar to him) but has grown to really like Dozy. When our baby girl is fussy, I’ve been turning on the ocean waves to soothe her. When she’s in her quiet-awake state, she looks around at the dolphin (almost as if she’s trying to figure out where the sound is coming from).
Dozy Dolphin On The Go is part of Cloud B’s Endangered Species series and a portion of this purchase goes to Conservation International. He retails for $23 and is available for purchase online.

All About Mama: HOTmilk Lingerie
January 17, 2010
When I was pregnant with both of my children, I remember people telling me that I glowed. I truly believe that is because I was so happy to be pregnant, (despite the fact that I had some difficulties during both pregnancies) because I didn’t feel beautiful at all. I mostly felt big and awkward.
Four weeks ago, our baby girl was born…healthy and beautiful and perfect. And I think that I’m enjoying my postpartum body even less than my pregnant one. At least when I was pregnant, I had an excuse for the belly and weight gain. I vowed before I got married not to “let myself go.” If you’re pregnant or nursing, there are many things you can do to look and feel beautiful, especially in front of your significant other.

HOTmilk offers gorgeous pregnancy lingerie and nursing bras. When I first saw their collection in person, I had a difficult time believing that the line was created for pregnant and nursing women. Because apart from the extra fabric in the torso and the nursing straps, you’d never know that the line was designed for this particular population. HOTmilk originated in New Zealand three years ago and was started by two young moms who’s goal was to empower women to regain their femininity and sensuality. The company specializes in elegant designs and utilizes the best technology and highest quality laces and details in their collection.
As a woman, I believe that it’s important to feel good about myself…and that includes how I look. Having a baby is truly the ultimate expression of womanhood. It IS a beautiful time in a woman’s life, and she should look and feel beautiful. Since this is the second time I’ve done pregnancy and nursing, I’ve had quite a bit of experience shopping for this time in my life. And I have to admit that when it comes to beauty and fashion, there aren’t a ton of options. Nursing bras, in particular, are at best plain.

HOTmilk is definitely a bold maternity and nursing line. But I am highly impressed with both the quality and designs offered. And I’d wear most of the pieces offered in their collection because they’re beautiful and tasteful. In fact, I’ve been sleeping in the Delighted With Her Victory Nursing Nightwear set. The set is very cozy and made from 100% cotton. It’s fashionable, comfortable, and functional. I really like some of the subtle details like the slight flare the pants have at the bottom and the silk accents (around the ankles and the drawstring on the pants). The top could be worn both during and after pregnancy since it’s gathered and roomy and has an A-frame shelf for support.
I also received the She Blushes In Delight Lingerie Set. Stunning…gorgeous…feminine… Those are just a few words describing this lovely Lingerie Set. The set is comprised of quality laces and fabrics and even includes rose details. The bra is very supportive (and features an A-frame support and a strong power elastane back), particularly for full-busted women. The shoulder straps are wide enough to compliment the support the bra provides. The back adjuster includes six rows of triple eyes to allow for both expansion during pregnancy and slimming afterward. The color and detail are lovely, but the style ensures that the set is functional.
During and after pregnancy, a supportive, well-fitting bra is crucial. I used to think that meant the bra had to be large and bulky. My experience with HOTmilk has proved otherwise. Their collection features fresh prints, reminiscent of European styling. Comfort, ease, and support are all factors that were considered with regards to their bras. The entire line is free from underwires and each features a one-handed maternity clip. Bras are available in sizes 30A to 42 G and bottoms, in sizes S-XXL. For more information about where to find HOTmilk lingerie, visit their site.

All About Baby: Prince Lionheart washPOD
January 17, 2010
Last fall, I had an opportunity to preview some of the newest and most popular baby items on the market at LA’s Plan a Baby Event. One of the companies represented was Prince Lionheart, a family-owned company offering products for babies and tots. Many of their latest products were on display, including their new washPOD.

When my son was a baby, I bought a regular bathtub with a cushion for infants. The tub really was too big for him, but the cushion gave me some security while I bathed my infant. Even for me, with my experience as a neonatal nurse, I find bathing infants to be a bit nerve-wracking. My son did not like baths and cried for a long time before he got used to them (which wasn’t until he was a toddler). We’d just make sure the water was warm, bathe him quickly, then get him out.
Before Plan A Baby, I had no idea another type of infant tub existed. Prince Lionhart’s washPOD offers parents a unique way of bathing their infants. Unlike infant tubs, the washPOD allows your baby to sit up and curl into the fetal position. This is a position that is most comforting for babies and eliminates the flailing that goes along with bathing in an infant tub. Because the washPOD is cylindrical, babies stay warm, and that also eliminates the stress your baby will undergo. I also like the fact that babies are contained in this tub pod. Once a baby gets wet, it can be difficult to keep a grip on them (which is why many parents don’t bathe their infants very often).

The washPOD is easy to set-up and use. You simply insert the foam cushion provided with the pod and fill it with water (be sure to mark the water level with the stickers provided so you know how much water to fill it with next time). The first time I bathed our little girl in it, I didn’t add enough water. When your baby is in the podtu, the water should be at chest level. I find the stickers helpful in making sure the water is at the right level (until she grows, of course).
The pod is designed for use at birth, and I tried it as soon as her umbilical cord fell off (about 10 days old). However, I would feel more comfortable using it when she has a bit more head control. I had my husband help me, but still felt a bit awkward with her in the pod (mostly due to her lack of head control). She didn’t mind it and I really like that she stays warm.
The washPOD retails for $24.99, can be used for infants 0-6 months, and is available online and at retailers nationwide.

All About Baby: Pediped Footwear
January 16, 2010
I remember someone once told me that babies learning to walk, ideally should do so barefoot. Now that works at home…on carpet…without dangers or obstacles. But I also believe babies and tots learning how to walk require sufficient support. Soft, leather shoes are as close to walking barefoot as you can get.
![]()
Last year, I introduced you to Pediped Footwear. The company “uses the latest technology, plus the highest quality materials and craftsmanship to create shoes for children that are designed to care for their feet from crawling, to those amazing first steps and into the toddler years.” Their shoes were awarded the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association because they promote healthy foot development.

We received an adorable pair of addison – stripes shoes for our baby girl. These Mary Jane-style shoes feature a velcro closure, a soft, supportive, non-slip leather sole, and a fabric upper. They’re extremely flexible and when you push down on the inside of the shoe, you feel the cushion. My experience with Pediped shoes is that they’re durable and last a long time. My son had a pair and he wore them until he outgrew them (but another child could still get wear out of them).
Pediped offers three lines: Originals, Flex, and Couture collections. Our baby girl will start in the Originals line, since it supports the growth and development of her tiny feet. The shoes are soft and flexible to allow for growth. The company also designs the shoes to resemble the natural shape of a baby’s foot (which tends to be more wide than narrow).

One of the things I found interesting about how children learn to walk is that they shuffle (initially). I would have thought that a shoe with grip, to prevent slipping, would be important. The opposite is true. Shoes with rubber soles or grip force children to alter their natural stride, predisposing them to tripping. The Originals line features a durable, slip-resistant leather sole. According to the site, the shoes are roomy so a baby’s foot can move and grip. The flexibility of the shoe allows the child to feel the floor (and thus prevent slipping and tripping). The shoes are lightweight and breathable.

Many baby shoes on the market are designed simply to look pretty. This is not the case with Pediped Footwear. I appreciate the science and technology behind the craftsmanship of these shoes. The site even has a detailed sizing guide to ensure your child is wearing the correct shoe. I know from my experience with my son, that the shoes are comfortable (he is old enough to take off shoes that don’t fit right). Lastly, the shoes are fashionable and stylish. I don’t think there is a shoe on their site that I wouldn’t want to put on either of my children’s feet.
Pediped just announced the launch of their new tights and socks collection. They’re available in six styles and made with the same comfort, quality, and style the company is known for. I haven’t had a chance to see them in person yet, but as our little girl gets older, I’ll definitely be looking into getting a pair.
Now through February 5th, the company is hosting Purchases with Purpose, a fundraiser to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Select styles of the company’s Originals and Flex lines are marked down up to 40 percent. Half of the sales from this promotion will be donated to the Foundation to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

All About Baby: Sassy
January 14, 2010
I don’t remember when I started buying toys for my son. I’m certain my baby shower resulted in books, stuffed animals, and other eye candy for babies. Play is vital for learning and development in children, and choosing the appropriate toys can be challenging.
Sassy, a company dedicated to offering developmental toys for babies, works with child development experts to design “products with purpose.” The company offers age- and development-specific toys for babies through the age of 12 months. I appreciate the fact that behind the company, are parents, just like you and I. Here is a little more information about the company and it’s products, from the site:
Sassy developmental baby products are designed to help build a solid foundation for lifelong learning by fostering development and stimulating the brain. Years of research, expert consultation and testing have led us to create product features that stimulate baby’s senses and emerging emotional, social, physical and intellectual skills. Those features include high contrast patterns, bright colors, symmetry, multiple textures, specific color language, product proportions; soothing, rhythmic and musical sounds: age appropriate materials; and innovative functional features.
I’m a busy mom of two, without a lot of time to waste. As soon as I saw the packaging on the toys, I noticed a. The age range the toy is geared towards and b. What the toy is supposed to do (developmentally) for my child. I don’t have to go online to research any of this information because it’s right there on the box. When given a choice from a variety of toys, I would definitely be drawn towards this line, simply because all of the information I want and need is right there for me. On the box, the company has also listed ways to use the toy to engage your child and foster his/her development.
Safety is also a major concern. The company understands how important safety is for parents and commits to using paint-free, BPA and phthalate-free plastics. From my experience with the toys, they’re durable and don’t pose any obvious safety hazards to my knowledge (i.e. small parts, etc.).

The toys themselves are colorful, musical, and attractive to babies. I’ve already used the Spin Shine Rattle and Crib and Floor Mirror with our little girl. Babies at her age can focus 8-12 inches away and prefer contrasting colors such as black and white. Her quiet-awake periods aren’t very long yet, but I have managed to put the rattle in front of her and watched her stare and gaze at it and attempt to follow it with her eyes when it moves.
While our little girl can’t necessarily “play” yet, I do think that introducing her to some of the toys specific for her age is a great way for us to start interacting with her in a unique way. My son had several toys from Sassy as a baby, my favorite being the Illumination Station which we’d put on his high chair to keep him entertained.
If you’re looking for well-researched, age- and development-specific toys that will help you and your child play in a unique and educational way, check out Sassy’s entire line.

All About Baby: Fresh Organics *Giveaway*
January 9, 2010
This contest is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. Congrats to Nan Lara!
When our baby girl was born (3 weeks ago!), my husband had an opportunity to help with her first bath. The nurses naturally wanted to do it right away (apparently to “disinfect” the baby!). Since we did not go to the hospital that day thinking we would be greeting her, we did not have a bag packed. It’s amazing to me that the standard product used on all newborn babies contains sodium laureth sulfate. We opted to wait until my husband could go home and pick up one of the natural baby products we keep on hand.

Fresh Organics offers organic, hypoallergenic baby care products free from potentially dangerous chemicals. Being a so-called “green mom”, I have had the opportunity to try a number of all-natural, organic skin and baby care products. I had an opportunity to try the company’s Bubble Bath and Shampoo & Body Wash. The two things I immediately noticed about the Bubble Bath were that it smelled lovely and it made a lot of bubbles (which my son was thrilled about). The company discloses all ingredients right on their site, which I appreciate, considering one of the first things my son did was try to eat a mouthful of bubbles!
The Shampoo & Body Wash also lathers well. I suggest using just a little on a child’s hair, since it can be a bit difficult to get out with a squirmy toddler. Both products are tearless…thankfully…because it’s rare for me not to get any soap at all in his eyes when he wiggles.
While I think both products smell lovely (and clean really well), I prefer to use unscented products on new babies and scented products on my son (who is a toddler). My son has very sensitive skin and I found myself avoiding all scents and chemicals when he was a baby. I’ve used it on our daughter and so far she hasn’t had any skin reactions. But I’d love the company to develop a fragrance-free version.
Fresh Organics also offers a Velvety Soft Moisturizing Baby Lotion and a Baby Bottom Balm. Each 8 oz tube retails for $7.99 (which is a very good price in my opinion).
Win It! One of you will win a tube of Calming Bubble Bath and a tube of Conditioning Baby Shampoo and Body Wash. Simply leave me a comment with something you liked or learned on the site.
