DisneyFamily.com’s Beauty Resources
March 16, 2010
The internet is an endless wealth of resources. I don’t know about you, but I often find it difficult to sift through the information to find exactly what I’m looking for. At times it’s like information overload. And everyone is an expert, right? Since there isn’t much governance over what’s put on the web, it’s important to be discerning about what you read. One of the sites I often go to for relevant, credible information is DisneyFamily.com.

DisneyFamily.com offers moms and dads one place to find everything from the best recipes to the top travel destinations. Here is a bit more information, from the site:
DisneyFamily.com also offers a diverse range of original and aggregated content specific to the needs and interests of parents. And woven throughout the site is a rich, easy to access community of other moms with shared parenting experiences. The site’s features include family-relevant search tools with highly rated, best of the Web results.
The site is organized into seven sections including food, parenting, entertainment, household, self, travel and holidays. DisneyFamily.com recently added a new beauty feature which provides moms with tips and expert advice on how to achieve inner and outer beauty. Here is some of the information you’ll find:

DisneyFamily.com is easy to navigate and offers comprehensive information on diverse topics in one location. My favorite part of the site are the videos. They’re succinct but comprehensive…perfect for busy moms on the go. For more information, just visit the site.
I did not receive compensation for this post. I attended a media event, hosted by the company to demo the site’s new features.
mirra *Giveaway*
March 7, 2010
This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is Christine! Congrats!
When I was younger and single, I didn’t care much about the amount of money spent on hair, face, and body products. Most of my purchases were made at upscale department stores and salons. These days I don’t have the freedom to spend as much on beauty products…and I actually prefer to spend the excess money on my children.
Kroger, the nation’s largest traditional grocery retailer (in our area they go by Ralphs) recently launched a new beauty brand called mirra. mirra “combines quality, natural ingredients with proven scientific technologies” to meet 3 different needs: Routine personal care (Daily); a rejuvenating time out (Renew); and a quick transformations for a night out (Inspire). The line includes shampoos and conditioners; hair styling products; body washes and mists; facial and skin care lotions, cleansers and cleansing cloths; eye firming and age defying creams; and cosmetic brushes.
I’ve always been a label reader. I’m concerned about parabens and phthalates and artificial anything. mirra products are made with natural ingredients, like olive oil, aloe leaf juice, cranberry, bamboo, honey and chicory root extracts. I’ve tried numerous products deemed organic or all-natural. At times, I have found that they simply don’t work as well as salon or department store brands. mirra products were designed to be natural AND effective.
I had an opportunity to try several of the products including the Deep-Moisture Day Cream, Wrinkle Reduction Eye Cream, Protective Lotion, Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner, Strong Sculpting Gel, and Replenishing Body Wash. One of the first things I noticed about the products was their scent. For a natural line, they have quite a bit of scent, but it’s not overwhelming.
My favorite product is the Replenishing Body Wash. It’s luxurious and leaves my skin feeling hydrated. The Color Care line is gentle but effective. Some body washes and hair care products don’t foam well. I know that the product doesn’t have to lather to be effective, but I still like thinking it does. The shampoo and body wash lather well and leave my skin and hair feeling clean. I actually don’t have my hair colored right now so I can’t speak on it’s effectiveness with regards to color maintenance. The Color Care line contains sunflower and red tea extracts which provide UVA/UVB protection which is a must for anyone with color-treated hair. I typically don’t like day face creams because they’re oily and don’t allow me to wear makeup on top of them. Both the day and eye cream rub in relatively well without being overly greasy. The Day Cream was designed to smooth away wrinkles and hydrate skin for 24 hours. I actually don’t have visible wrinkles (yet) but I did find that my face didn’t feel as dry as it has been the last several weeks. The Eye Cream was designed to reduce wrinkles, hydrate, and firm skin. I tend to have dark circles under my eyes (it’s herediary) and while the Eye Cream didn’t elminate them, I felt they were less noticeable. Both Day and Eye creams should be used twice a day for two weeks to full realize results.
Have you ever visited a spa or department store, only to be shown a beauty regimen that would be impossible to replicate at home? mirra was designed to help women achieve their beauty goals effortlessly. I have two children, a husband, a part-time job, and a house to care for. Anything more than a 10 or 15 minute routine would be impossible for me to achieve. These products are quick and easy to use, and so far I’ve been happy with the results.
mirra products can be found in the beauty care aisles at all stores that are part of the Kroger Co. family. For a limited time, mirra is offering $5 off when you purchase any two mirra products. To download the coupon visit www.kroger.com\coupons.
Win It! One of you will win a gift pack of mirra products (similar to what I reviewed). Simply leave me a comment with a product from the site that you’d like to try. Caress…Evenly Gorgeous *Giveaway*
February 5, 2010
This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is Kristy. Congrats!
Showers are my five two minutes of respite. Most days I’m hurrying to get finished before the baby starts crying or my toddler wakes up. This time in my life, while temporary, can be a bit stressful. It’s always when I have one more leg to shave that they need me. Despite the fact that my showers are short these days, I still try to ensure that they’re relaxing.
I really enjoy writing about products we already use. My parents used to purchase two kinds of soap when I was growing up. Caress was one of them. They’ve recently launched a new scent called Evenly Gorgeous. The scent is “a mix of burnt sugar and karate butter which helps moisturize, gently exfoliate and reveal even-toned, radiant and silky skin.” I typically prefer body wash over bars of soap, however, I really like the way the beauty bars make my skin feel.
The scent is definitely more on the sweet side, but I like it. It’s not overwhelming. While I still think I prefer Caress’s original scent, I’d consider purchasing Evenly Gorgeous (particularly their beauty bars) in the future. You can find Caress products at retailers nationwide.
Win It! One of you will win a set of beauty bars. Simply leave me a comment with something you liked or learned on the site. Comments will close on February 20, 2010 at 11:59 PM PST. February 4, 2010

Before I had children, I spent time and resources on products designed to help make me look and feel good. Becoming a mom, as wonderful as it is, results in sacrifices. These days I take 5 minute (or less) showers, wear my hair up in a clip more often than not, and rarely put on makeup. Holiday Gift Guide 2009: Clarisonic Skin Care System *Giveaway*
October 28, 2009
This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is Lina. Congrats!
This post was previously written and republished.
Up until Christmas Eve, my beauty regimen consisted of washing my face with soap and water. (period) But that wasn’t always my routine. When I was single I spent a lot of time buying and using the proper skin care products so that I would age “gracefully.” I enjoyed facials and made sure I found time for masks and exfoliation. Somewhere between “I do” and “It’s a boy” I found it difficult to get in a shower, let alone a 45 minute skin care regimen. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I often go to bed without removing my makeup. And that sometimes results in breakouts even a teenager would shudder at.
What if I told you that you could achieve healthier, smoother skin in just sixty seconds a day? I recently had the opportunity to test out the Clarisonic Skin Care System. I cannot imagine NOT having this system now that I’ve been using it every day for two weeks now.
What is it? Clarisonic is an innovative new product that is revolutionizing the definition of clean, healthy skin. Developed by the creators of Sonicare, Clarisonic Skin Care System is the first oscillating face brush that deep cleanses, stimulates, and clarifies skin. The brush creates over 300 movements per second (wow!) to elicit a gentle sonic micro-massage action which help to loosen sebum and dirt. It works with the skin’s natural elasticity to unclog pores for deeper cleansing without stripping the skin. Clarisonic cleans your skin so thoroughly that it actually helps prepare your skin to absorb other skin care products like moisturizers.
How does it work? Before you begin using the system, it must be charged 24 hours. But…you only have to recharge it after 30 uses (or 30 minutes), which is excellent. It is super easy to use and can even be used in the shower. Just wet your face (or whatever part of the body you’d like to use the system on), rub on the cleanser of your choice (it comes with three sample sizes of varying cleanser types), turn on the power button, and move the brush gently using small, circular motions. You can customize the settings on your system to achieve the best results for your skin type. The company also offers three different brush heads for varying skin types. It is recommended that you replace the brush head every 3-4 months.
Does it REALLY work? Studies have shown that Clarisonic cleanses twice as effectively and removes makeup six times more effectively than your daily soap and washcloth routine. Some of the other benefits include healthier skin, fewer blemishes, fewer dry patches, decreased pore size, and softer skin. In just eight weeks you’ll notice an improvement (and a reduction) in the appearnace of fine lines and wrinkles.
My Thoughts: I have to admit that I was a tad bit nervous to use Clarisonic. Would it hurt? Would my skin be too sensitive? Not only is Clarisonic safe to use on all skin types, it’s so gentle that it can be used on a daily basis (twice a day if necessary). Even those who suffer from skin conditions such as acne, seborheic dermatitis, and rosacea can use Clarisonic. I have been using this every day and one of the very first things I noticed is that when I dry my face after using it, there is no makeup residue on the towel. My face feels a lot smoother and the pores on the bridge of my nose have gotten smaller (some have even disappeared). I also haven’t had as many breakouts. Every time I use it I feel like I’m getting a mini-facial.
The Clarisonic Skin Care System retails for $195 and can be purchased from the site or through retailers nationwide. If you purchase the system directly through the site, you’ll receive a free gift which includes a 0.5 ounce Daily Renewal Serum, travel bag, and headband AND you will receive free personalization (either a name or short message)
Win It! One of you will win a Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System (ARV $149). Simply leave me a comment with one main difference between the MIA and the other Clarisonic units. Comments will close on December 1, 2009 at 10 pm PST. One comment per person, please (unless you do the extra credit). US residents only. All Made Up… Plus a Sephora Giveaway!
September 21, 2009
This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winners are Charlene, Ladytink_534, Alyssa, Jennie, and Jill. Congrats!
I used to wear makeup every day before I had children. But my outings these days consist of preschool, church, playdates, grocery shopping, and other “mommy” activities. I’m fortunate if I get a shower in before my husband goes to work. Otherwise, I wait until my son’s nap (right after lunch), since he doesn’t like to be confined in his room (I can’t stand the thought of doing that to him) and I won’t leave him alone (for safety reasons). So makeup? Well, just like shaving my legs, it only happens on occasion these days. Most days it doesn’t even phase me. And my husband constantly tells me that he loves me no matter how my clothes, hair or face look. But every now and then I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror…and then I look at photos in our bedroom of my husband and I before we had children. And I get a little nostalgic for the days when I had time to primp a bit.
I LOVE what Stephanie reiterates over and over on her blog. That this season of breastfeeding and co-sleeping and diaper changes and potty training and chasing after little ones is so short. And I’m certain my little boy doesn’t care whether mommy has “done” her hair or her makeup before we go out or have story time or snack time.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a makeup routine that took…oh…say…ten minutes? Moms…would you do it more often if that were the case? I might be inclined to say yes (it would depend on the day, of course). Thanks to Tammy from A Mom in Red High Heels and Sephora, I had an opportunity to check out two of Sephora’s FREE Express Services with four other LA-based gals. Here is a little more information about the services (which I mentioned are FREE…can I get a Squee?):
At this ultimate glam-and-go spot, get a free ultraquick makeover, score personalized makeup lessons from our pros, and leave wearing one of today’s most sought-after looks.

Since Tammy is THE beauty and fashion blogger (and so stylish with her red high heels), we received the royal treatment! We had an opportunity to check out 2 of the services offered. Each store varies a bit in what they have to offer, but each one should offer the Perfect Pout, Smoky Eye, and High Definition Makeup. In addition, each store offers “seasonal” looks such as Candy-Colored Eyes and Dark Lips (just out!). I opted for the Smoky Eye and the High Definition Makeup. I LOVED how she made my eyes stand out and my skin look flawless (I’ve got the pregnancy hormonal breakout going on!).
If you check out the company’s website, you’ll find How-To videos that will help you achieve that look. Each should take about ten minutes. When I was being “made over,” it took a bit longer because the makeup artist explained each step to me as she did it. Be sure to check out the site for info on how to achieve the above looks. Or better yet, visit a store and try one out (they’re free…I know…I mentioned that already). I think it would be perfect to do this before a night out or a special event. One last note about the services…the makeup artist who is working with you will help you find the right products to help you achieve each look, if you’d like. The gal I worked with wrote them all down for me! Check out some pictures we took from our makeover session:

Win It! We all received adorable little gift bags containing an exclusive cosmetic bag filled with a mirror, some Fekkai samples, and a LashFusion mascara. I have 5 coupons to give away that will get you the same cosmetic bag when you try one of their FREE services (available only at their Glendale, Century City, and Santa Monica stores). Simply leave me a comment with your best beauty tip for moms like me who are on-the-go and don’t have a lot of time because of little ones. Comments will close on October 5, 2009 at 10 PM PST. Mineral Secrets
March 8, 2009
Just because I’m a mom doesn’t mean lost my femininity. I like to look nice and I like to spend a little time each day putting on lip gloss, powder, and eye shadow. What I don’t like are heavy makeups that look unnatural and clog my pores! Because I’m a mom and a nurse, I like natural, flawless coverage that accentuates my lips and my eyes (two of my husband’s favorite features!). I also like products that don’t require a lot of time and effort. Trying to put on makeup while my toddler is pulling on my shirt or opening every cabinet in the bathroom is not an easy task.
I recently received the Multi-Task Mineral Starter Kit from Mineral Secrets to review thanks to the Family Review Network. I have tried mineral makeup in the past from a different company and loved it. The only problem with the previous brand was that I had purchased it at a salon…let me clarify…at a salon with salon prices. So once I finished it I never purchased it again because it was so expensive (I was young and single back then). I know from experience that mineral makeup really is the best kind of makeup for your skin. I used to really struggle with breakouts…even into my twenties and that was why I had initially decided to try mineral makeup. My makeup artist had told me that it may help with eliminating some of the problems I was having with my complexion and it did.
Mineral makeup is comprised of serecite, silk powder, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide and helps offer protection from the sun. The makeup is a pure silk powder that offeres flawless, weightless coverage. It is the perfect makeup for any skin-type (normal, oily, dry, sensitive) and won’t clog your pores or lead to breakouts. One of the things I found interesting about mineral makeup is that it doesn’t contain moisturizers because they can promote the growth of bacteria (yuk!). Here is a little more information about Mineral Secrets from the site:
Mineral Secrets’ products offer the makeup attributes you want: wonderfully light, smooth texture, ideal coverage, easy application, wide variety of colors (so you have your favorite color and something new!), long-lasting, natural sun protection, barely noticeable, no harmful ingredients like chemicals, preservatives, oil, fragrances or talc, no clogging pores, nourishes the skin, acts like an antioxidant, covers acne, blemishes, scars and pores and of course, it makes you feel younger and healthier!
The starter kit I received includes two shades of the ultra-sensitive Mineral Base, an ultra-sensitive Multi-Task Shadow, and a Kabuki Brush (which is THE best brush for putting foundation on!). With this little kit, which retails for $32.95, you have your foundation, and a colored shadow that you can use as an eyeshadow, an eyeliner, a lipstick, a blush, and color for clear nail polish. The price isn’t looking so bad is it? And…it lasts a really long time because you don’t need a lot of product to achieve the look you want. It’s really easy to put on and you can basically make the coverage as light or heavy as you need. If you’re not makeup-savvy, this is the perfect makeup for you. If you’re a pro, this is the perfect makeup for you. Check out my video review!

Profuse thanks to Mineral Secrets and the Family Review Network for this fabulous review opportunity!

Well it’s the middle of my week of beauty reviews and I’ve got another fabulous mommy must-have! There are a lot of products I can’t justify spending money on…self-tanners come to mind (keep in mind I’m exotic Puerto Rican with olive-toned skin). But when it comes to my hair…I’m so there (I know…cheesy!). Seriously…if you can see it…I want it looking good! I have thick, curly hair which I highlight, so I’m willing to spend the money on quality hair care products. I like to alternate between a couple of high-quality salon brands to keep my hair fresh and vibrant. I will add JLife Haircare to my repertoire of fabulous hair care companies.
Here is a little more information about JLife Haircare from the site:
JLife is a range of haircare preparations developed by renowned international stylist Andrew Jose. Each product in the range is formulated exactly to do the job it is intended to do… low in additives, good for the environment and good for hair. From keeping hair more moist to colour protection, indeed JLife has a preparation for every consideration in hair care.
Thanks to Mom Fuse, I was sent a full-sized sample of The Big One Shampoo. The goal of this particular line is to cleanse and give volume and body due to the added wheat germ and polymers in the shampoo and conditioner. Sea Moss and Provitamin B5 add moisture and Vitamin E improves microcirculation to the skin. In all honesty, I don’t necessarily need a thickening shampoo, but I really liked it. I didn’t feel like it made my hair too “big” or “thick.” It has a lovely scent and it made my hair feel soft with some body. I usually wear my hair curly. When I straighten my hair with a flat iron, it tends to need a little lift which is exactly what The Big One did for my hair. It’s very gentle but I think if I had straight, lifeless hair it would be very effective. One of the things I did notice after using the shampoo was that my hair was very easy to comb (which is not typical because it’s so curly). I am really anxious to try some of the other products in the line, specifically Catch a Wave (designed for curly hair) and Drench (an intensive conditioner).
The entire line of JLife Haircare products can only be found in a salon. You can also purchase directly from the site. The prices are reasonable for such a high-quality line of haircare. One bottle retails for $16.00.
Profuse thanks to Mom Fuse and JLife for this review opportunity!
