Summer DVD Releases
August 18, 2010
I think it’s been weeks since my husband and I have watched a movie…particularly one that isn’t animated! Since we don’t get a lot of opportunities to go out to the movies, we rely on DVD and Netflix to catch up on the latest releases.
On August 24th, Image Entertainment will release $5 A Day on Blu-Ray ($29.98) and DVD ($27.98). With an all-star cast line up including Christopher Walken, Sharon Stone, Amanda Peet, and Peter Coyote, $5 A Day will make you laugh and warm your heart. Here is a short synopsis from the site:
Nat (Christopher Walken) is an eccentric conman – a hustler content with a life of schemes and underhanded deals. He lacks one thing: a reconciliation with his son, Flynn (Alessandro Nivola), who has ceased trusting his father long ago. But Nat’s time is growing short: he has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. True to form, Nat cons Flynn into joining him in a cross country journey to an experimental medical facility. Short on money, but not on imagination, the two realize that to reach their destination they can spend no more than $5 A Day. They come up with increasingly ridiculous schemes to keep within their budget – but there is a distance of emotion as well as miles to cover. Are they on the path towards a father-son reunion?
On September 14th, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Jerry Bruckheimer Films will release Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on Blu-Ray and DVD. Starring Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley, this action-adventure film is filled with “spectacular visual effects, exotic locales, and breathtaking action.” Here is a short synopsis from the site:
In the spirit of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films transport you to the mystical lands of Persia for this wildly entertaining, epic action-adventure. It‘s a race against time when a rogue prince (Jake Gyllenhaal) reluctantly teams up with a rival princess (Gemma Arterton) to safeguard a magical dagger that gives its possessor the power to reverse time and rule the world. Filled with death-defying escapes and unexpected twists at every turn – Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a fun-filled adventure that will keep your pulse pounding long after the credits end.
On September 21, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue on Blu-ray & DVD. The movie features the voice talents of Michael Sheen, Pamela Adlon, Lucy Liu, and Kristin Chenoweth as fairies and humans meet for the first time. Here is a short synopsis from the site:
What would you do if you met a fairy? Witness the historic moment when Tinker Bell first meets a human being, and it’s not who you think. Years before meeting Wendy and the Lost Boys, Tinker Bell met Lizzy, a little girl with a steadfast belief in the power of pixie dust and the magic land of fairies. During the fairies’ summer visit to the flowering meadows of England, two very different worlds unite for the first time and Tink develops a special bond with a curious child in need of a friend. As her fellow fairies launch a daring rescue, Tinker Bell takes a huge risk, putting her own safety and the future of all fairykind in jeopardy. Experience Disney’s astonishing all-new movie about the true power of faith and friendship.
Lastly, I know it’s not a movie per se, but one of my favorite shows (the 4th season), which is no longer on air, just came out on DVD. Ugly Betty: The Complete Fourth and Final Season, is now available on DVD from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.
There are underdogs and then there is Betty Suarez, the ultimate “fish-out-of-water.” Her efforts to fit in with her colleagues at a glossy magazine may bring unintentionally hysterical results, but they also have audiences rooting for their favorite fashionista. Betty sure has come a long way! She is finally coming into her own and getting what she’s worked so hard for. But what she doesn’t realize is that she’s starting over in so many ways, and if she wants to play in the big leagues she needs to keep up.

Back to School With Master Lock *Giveaway*
August 9, 2010
I’m back! I think it’s been at least five whole days since I’ve blogged, which is longer than I think I’ve ever gone. And…I’m still in New York City so posting, etc. will be light this week.
If you have a student looking to keep their items safe, Master Lock has developed a list of tips as the school year resumes:
- Back-up the backpack
Backpacks are a popular and practical tool for carrying books and supplies but can easily be targeted for theft. Help deter theft with a secure backpack lock, such as Master Lock’s 1548 carabineer lock or 1533TRI mini combination lock. Students should also remember to keep their backpack and other valuables with them at all times. - Engrave valuables
Permanently marking items with a student’s first initial and last nmae makes them more difficult to pawn, easier to recognize as stolen and easier to identify and reclaim. - Keep personal information private
Limit the personal information shared on valuables, front doors, mailboxes, key chains, backpacks and other items. Your student should not share his or her address or complete name in order to avoid additional risk if an item is stolen or misplaced, or if your student’s living space is violated. - Keep money safe
Before sending college kids out on their own, teach them how to responsibly use a debit or credit card to allow them to carry less cash. When storing money and other small valuables in high-traffic areas, such as dorms and apartments, students should always lock them up in a cash or document box made of durable steel, such as the Master Lock 7113D cash box, 7143D drawer safe or 7142D security chest. - Lock personal items in lockers
Every student should be equipped with a high security padlock to keep his or her belongings locked safely in a locker whenever possible, whether at the gym or in the classroom. There are a variety of padlocks available, including combination-alike locks so users don’t have to remember multiple combinations and set-your-own password locks so users can personalize their locks and create an easy-to-remember passwords, such as Master Lock’s 1500iD Speed Dial, 1590D Precision Dial or 1534D combination lock. - Safeguard bikes
Invest in one of Master Lock’s high security u-bars paired with a large diameter (3/8-inch or greater) cable. Use the cable to secure both wheels to the bike and the u-bar to anchor the bike frame to a secure, immovable object such as a cemented bike rack. - Always lock doors and windows
Teach students to always lock their doors and windows to prevent unwanted entry. To prevent someone from forcing their way in the room as well as protect against others who still have a key from previous years, students should invest in a door and window security bar, such as the Master Lock 265 security bar or 266D window bar and alarm. - Travel safely
Whether traveling by bus, train or air, a lock is imperative for keeping your student’s belongings safe throughout their entire travel route. Invest in a TSA-accepted locking device — the one lock airport screeners won’t cut. These locks allow TSA screeners to inspect and relock baggage without damaging the lock. Students should secure both their checked luggage and carry-on bags with a TSA-approved locking closure, such as the Master Lock 4688D TSA-accepted combination lock. - Insure your student’s valuables
Check to see if your homeowners insurance covers your student’s belongings while they reside in either on- or off-campus housing. If not, consult with an insurance agent to determine what additional coverage is necessary. - Be aware and prepared, not scared
While it’s a parent’s job to be overprotective, don’t scare your student into thinking college is a completely un-safe atmosphere. Do teach them to be aware of their surroundings — walk with confidence and pay attention to what’s going on around them, and be sure to review the school’s safety programs and services during orientation or online. Preparation and awareness are the keys to safety in any situation.

Light Summer Snacks Featuring Melba Toast
May 11, 2010
Have you ever had an opportunity to try Melba Toast? I know it’s hard to believe, but up until a week or so ago, I had never tried this crunchy little snack (and they’ve been around for 80 years!). They’re great for snacking but I actually like the idea of using them as substitutes for higher calorie breads in recipes. They’re available in eight flavors, four of which contain whole grains. Here is a tuna recipe I found on their site that was actually really good (it’s dairy and egg free so my son is able to eat this):
Tuna Classic

![]()
Serves 4
4 – 3oz packets of White Albacore Tuna, fully cooked
2 Squirts Lemon Juice
1 1/2 Tablespoon finely diced Bermuda Onion (Red Onion)
1-2 stalks celery, finely diced (optional)
1/2 Tablespoon Garlic powder
2 medium dill pickles, chopped
Combine the above ingredients and spoon onto Melba Rye Toasts
Garnish with celery leaves
For extra flare, add your favorite hot pepper sauce or a pinch of turmeric powder
You can also snack on Melba Toast with hummus or make mini bruschetta with them by adding tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, and basil (season with salt and pepper if you’d like). The most interesting recipe I saw included dipping them in chocolate! Be sure to check out their site for more summer-inspired recipes.
Now through June 30, 2010, you can enter their “Dance Your Way to Hollywood” contest. One winner and a guest will receive an all-expense paid trip to California which includes private lessons at 3rd Street Dance Studio and tickets to watch the television show taping (four-day, three night trip which includes air and hotel). To enter, just visit Toast for Everyday Health.

Wanted Shoes
January 20, 2010
Some women splurge on designer handbags or expensive jewelry. While I do appreciate those things (and would never turn them down…hint hint hubby), I’d purchase a gorgeous pair of shoes over both of those items on any day. My husband is always trying to bribe persuade me to get rid of some of my shoes. And to be honest, I’ve had some of the shoes in my closet since I was in college and I think it’s probably time to update my shoe wardrobe.
I’ve always been very conscious of my spending habits. And now that I’m staying home with the kids for a bit, I am striving to be a smart shopper. I was recently introduced to Wanted Shoes, “an internationally recognized brand known for fun, fashionable footwear.” The company strives to offer consumers quality, stylish shoes that are also affordable. The majority of the line is geared towards junior and young contemporary women. Their style is described as edgy with a European flair. Some of the shoes you’ll find include Casual and Dressy Boots, Heels, Flats, Sandals, Sneakers, and Clogs.

Despite the fact that I live in Southern California, I still enjoy wearing boots. And right now I’m proudly wearing these Holster Short Brown Boots from Wanted Shoes. They’re short (perfect for SoCal!), distressed boots adorned with chains and studded straps. I was surprised at how comfortable they are, given the pointy toe. The heel is high enough to give me some height but not so tall that I have difficulty walking in them. I’ve been wearing them with jeans and casual wear, however I could see myself wearing them with a skirt to dress the outfit up a bit. Comfort is my first priority when I purchase a pair of shoes. However, the look and style of the shoe is just as important. The boots from Wanted Shoes achieve both requisites. They’re also durable and made well.

The company just released their 2010 line. Many of the shoes are identical to those with designer brand names on them…they’re just available at a fraction of the cost. It’s a new year… Perhaps you want to change up your style a bit. Check out Wanted Shoes for fashionable, affordable footwear with styles that are in season now. Right now they’re offering free same day shipping and buy 2 get one free.

All About Baby: Pediped Footwear
January 16, 2010
I remember someone once told me that babies learning to walk, ideally should do so barefoot. Now that works at home…on carpet…without dangers or obstacles. But I also believe babies and tots learning how to walk require sufficient support. Soft, leather shoes are as close to walking barefoot as you can get.
![]()
Last year, I introduced you to Pediped Footwear. The company “uses the latest technology, plus the highest quality materials and craftsmanship to create shoes for children that are designed to care for their feet from crawling, to those amazing first steps and into the toddler years.” Their shoes were awarded the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association because they promote healthy foot development.

We received an adorable pair of addison – stripes shoes for our baby girl. These Mary Jane-style shoes feature a velcro closure, a soft, supportive, non-slip leather sole, and a fabric upper. They’re extremely flexible and when you push down on the inside of the shoe, you feel the cushion. My experience with Pediped shoes is that they’re durable and last a long time. My son had a pair and he wore them until he outgrew them (but another child could still get wear out of them).
Pediped offers three lines: Originals, Flex, and Couture collections. Our baby girl will start in the Originals line, since it supports the growth and development of her tiny feet. The shoes are soft and flexible to allow for growth. The company also designs the shoes to resemble the natural shape of a baby’s foot (which tends to be more wide than narrow).

One of the things I found interesting about how children learn to walk is that they shuffle (initially). I would have thought that a shoe with grip, to prevent slipping, would be important. The opposite is true. Shoes with rubber soles or grip force children to alter their natural stride, predisposing them to tripping. The Originals line features a durable, slip-resistant leather sole. According to the site, the shoes are roomy so a baby’s foot can move and grip. The flexibility of the shoe allows the child to feel the floor (and thus prevent slipping and tripping). The shoes are lightweight and breathable.

Many baby shoes on the market are designed simply to look pretty. This is not the case with Pediped Footwear. I appreciate the science and technology behind the craftsmanship of these shoes. The site even has a detailed sizing guide to ensure your child is wearing the correct shoe. I know from my experience with my son, that the shoes are comfortable (he is old enough to take off shoes that don’t fit right). Lastly, the shoes are fashionable and stylish. I don’t think there is a shoe on their site that I wouldn’t want to put on either of my children’s feet.
Pediped just announced the launch of their new tights and socks collection. They’re available in six styles and made with the same comfort, quality, and style the company is known for. I haven’t had a chance to see them in person yet, but as our little girl gets older, I’ll definitely be looking into getting a pair.
Now through February 5th, the company is hosting Purchases with Purpose, a fundraiser to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Select styles of the company’s Originals and Flex lines are marked down up to 40 percent. Half of the sales from this promotion will be donated to the Foundation to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

It’s a Baby Shower (Part 3)
December 5, 2009
Warning: This post contains information about breastfeeding.
I’ve been to a lot of baby showers. In fact, I was one of the last in my group of girl friends to have children. While everyone else was nesting and planning, my husband and I were backpacking Europe. All that to say that while I’m so glad my husband and I had that incredible experience of bonding and seeing the world, I have so much joy and love for my son and our baby girl (who will be here in less than 4 weeks!).
Have you ever noticed that baby shower gifts usually don’t include a single gift for the mother-to-be? Now, I’m definitely not complaining (at all), but there are some things a mom-to-be could really benefit from. So today’s post is all about the gifts moms (like me) would probably enjoy receiving. Whether it be something essential like a nursing bra or something to pamper her like bath gel…here are some fabulous gift ideas for the mother-to-be.
Belli: When I was pregnant with my son, I was DETERMINED not to get stretch marks. Sadly, so much of it is genetic and I did end up with some just like my mother. But, I rigorously rubbed oil all over my belly every single morning and evening with my son (I haven’t been as consistent about it with this one). Surprisingly, I haven’t developed any new stretch marks and I’m 35 weeks (yeah!). Belli offers three lines of skin care products for pregnant women, babies, and new mothers. I received the Motherhood Essentials Kit which includes products designed to restore a woman’s body including nursing cream, eye brightening cream, body firming serum, and hand sanitizer. The company has high safety standards and is the only skin care line that screens for teratogens and xenoestrogens.
My Brest Friend: Nursing my son proved to be more challenging than I imagined. It also didn’t help that I had a c-section. During my many months of nursing, I used an awesome nursing pillow. My very good friend insisted I purchase My Brest Friend. I know I would not have been able to nurse my son comfortably without it. It got to the point where I even brought it with me in the car for nursing sessions. Two things I KNOW make this pillow different from the rest. It wraps around you (so it stays put and so does your baby) and it’s got a supportive back rest. I have never tried another nursing pillow but I will say that my son never slid down or rolled away because the pillow was too squishy!
The Shower Hug: I remember all too well the pain of breast-feeding. When my milk finally came in, I was engorged, febrile, and in a lot of pain. I don’t know if it’s like this for every woman but it was for me. I suffered through numerous bouts of mastitis but I endured it all because nursing my son was of the utmost importance. How I wish I had The Shower Hug! You can use it in and out of the shower and for support and protection for women who have had a c section. So, I guess I’ll have to get another since I’ll be using it for all 3 purposes! Providing support, protection, and therapeutic relief, The Shower Hug is definitely something that’s going to get a ton of use!
Laugh & Learn: As a nurse with almost 10 years experience in obstetrics and neonatal nursing, you’d think that I’d be the LAST one to fear childbirth. I should know it all right? No Fear! Ha! While I have a lot of knowledge and experience, that didn’t (and doesn’t) change the fact that there were things I was nervous and even afraid of. If you’re a busy mom who maybe doesn’t have time to attend childbirth classes, are on bed-rest (like I was with my first pregnancy), or don’t like the formal setting of a classroom, you must check out the Laugh & Learn childbirth education program. Taught by an RN, you and your significant other will actually enjoy learning all about childbirth, newborn care, and breast-feeding…all in the comfort of your own home on your time. All three series are informative and actually quite entertaining! Her teaching style is relaxed and non-threatening.
Bravado! Designs: Having a supportive nursing bra is essential (trust me!). I had a very difficult time finding a proper fitting nursing bra after I had my son. Now that I have an idea of what size I will be wearing, it’s much easier to purchase bras online (I would recommend getting fitted by a professional the first time around to make sure you’re wearing the correct type and size of bra). Many of the nursing bras I saw in stores were supportive, but not particularly attractive. Nursing is not the most glamorous of motherly activities. Bravado! Designs offers comfortably fashionable bras that fit! I particularly like their “What the heck should I buy? section which is a great place to start!
Preggers by Therafirm: When I was 34 weeks pregnant with my son, my feet started swelling (which apparently is quite normal unless you’ve been diagnosed with pre-eclampsia). I spent a lot of time with my feet up, but it was terribly uncomfortable. Fortunately, I have not had to experience leg swelling in this pregnancy. Pregnancy, as miraculous as it is, can be very uncomfortable. I am very appreciative of companies who have gone out of their way to research ways of making these 10 (yes 10) months more comfortable. When I worked on the floor, I always wore support stockings and socks due to the 12 hours I was required to be on my feet. Preggers by Therafirm offers trendy, comfortable compression hosiery that isn’t impossible to put on. Now that it’s winter, I’ve been wanting to keep my feet warm. When given the option, I definitely prefer the trouser socks over the panty hose but I didn’t spend ten minutes trying to put either one on (which is a good sign!). They provide enough support to make a difference but they’re not so tight that they leave marks. Preggers by Therafirm are not available yet, but soon They also plan on including maternity and postpartum support products in their line. Stay tuned!
Are you ready for another game?

It’s a Baby Shower (Part 2) *Giveaway*
December 3, 2009
It’s day two of my month long baby series and we’ve got another set of prizes, games, and fabulous baby products.
Sleepy Wrap: For the first 6 months of my baby’s lives, they are “attached” to me. We breastfeed and co-sleep. I wear my babies until they start becoming mobile. It’s part of the attachment process and I feel like it helps secure our bond. Babywearing has a number of benefits for both mom and baby (maybe I’ll write a post one day). I much prefer to cozily wrap my babies and keep them warm and secure. There are a TON of wraps, slings, carriers, etc. on the market. Choosing one can be overwhelming. Sleepy Wrap is a versatile wrap that can be worn several different ways, for several different stages of your child’s early life. Once you master the art of tying it, you’ll love it!
Mutsy Grow-Up: I consider myself to be rather trendy and in-the-know about the latest in products and companies. Both my husband and I like modern designs. So having Mutsy’s Grow-Up chair in our home fits right in with our decor style. No need for a high chair since you can fasten this chair safely to a regular chair (handy and definitely a space saver). And you child will get many years of use out of it since it’s appropriate for children up to the age of 4. The bright colors are perfect for stimulating babies and tots!
Aden and Anais: The company’s muslin swaddle wraps are my absolute fav. They keep baby warm and cozy without overheating him/her. They’re super soft and bigger than average swaddle blankets, making it less likely that a baby will unwrap him/herself. Plus, they come in stylish modern prints for boys and girls. Once your baby no longer wants to be swaddled, you can use their sleeping bags which are made from the same cotton muslin you’ll find in their wraps. They are also designed to reduce the incidence of SIDS.
Pediped: The BEST thing for babies and toddlers who are learning to walk is to go barefoot. However, that is a concept that is impractical for most families. I would much prefer to have shoes protecting my baby’s feet. Flexibility, support, and comfort are the most important things to look for in a shoe. Pediped offers all three at highly affordable prices. And, their shoes are adorable! The company offers three collections: Originals, Flex, and Couture.
SmartKnitKIDS: And while we’re on the subject of feet, I’ll introduce you to a company who makes seamless socks to offer your child the most comfortable fit. How many times have you taken off your child’s socks only to see their soft skin imprinted with sock seams? SmartKnitKIDS offers 100% seamless socks and a form-fitting design so there are no lumps or bumps. They truly offer a perfectly comfortable fit.
Are you ready for another game?

I’m almost 35 weeks and I finally have a picture of my pregnant belly (covered of course!). I’ve taken the liberty of measuring my belly with toilet paper squares (apparently that is what you do when you’re 8 1/2 months pregnant). So, your job is to guess how many squares it will take to go around the largest part of my belly (the center). Easy right? Remember…leave your answer in the comment section along with your prize choices (in order of preference).
Prizes for Game #2:
$25 Gift Certificate to Happy Panda Baby
Weil Baby Gift Set

The Mother of All Baby Showers!
November 9, 2009
As I’ve hinted in the last week or so, four amazing gals are throwing me a baby shower. And of course, being the digital moms that we are, it’s going to be an ONLINE shower! How cool is that? I feel so honored that this little baby girl is going to be so blessed. Now, it wouldn’t be a baby shower without games (and prizes) right? So, starting December 1st, you will have an opportunity to win some of the gifts we received for our little girl. Take a look at this fabulous list of sponsors…then leave a comment and mark your calendars!
Holiday Gift Guide 2009: Clarisonic Skin Care System *Giveaway*
October 28, 2009
This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is Lina. Congrats!
This post was previously written and republished.
Up until Christmas Eve, my beauty regimen consisted of washing my face with soap and water. (period) But that wasn’t always my routine. When I was single I spent a lot of time buying and using the proper skin care products so that I would age “gracefully.” I enjoyed facials and made sure I found time for masks and exfoliation. Somewhere between “I do” and “It’s a boy” I found it difficult to get in a shower, let alone a 45 minute skin care regimen. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I often go to bed without removing my makeup. And that sometimes results in breakouts even a teenager would shudder at.
What if I told you that you could achieve healthier, smoother skin in just sixty seconds a day? I recently had the opportunity to test out the Clarisonic Skin Care System. I cannot imagine NOT having this system now that I’ve been using it every day for two weeks now.
What is it? Clarisonic is an innovative new product that is revolutionizing the definition of clean, healthy skin. Developed by the creators of Sonicare, Clarisonic Skin Care System is the first oscillating face brush that deep cleanses, stimulates, and clarifies skin. The brush creates over 300 movements per second (wow!) to elicit a gentle sonic micro-massage action which help to loosen sebum and dirt. It works with the skin’s natural elasticity to unclog pores for deeper cleansing without stripping the skin. Clarisonic cleans your skin so thoroughly that it actually helps prepare your skin to absorb other skin care products like moisturizers.
How does it work? Before you begin using the system, it must be charged 24 hours. But…you only have to recharge it after 30 uses (or 30 minutes), which is excellent. It is super easy to use and can even be used in the shower. Just wet your face (or whatever part of the body you’d like to use the system on), rub on the cleanser of your choice (it comes with three sample sizes of varying cleanser types), turn on the power button, and move the brush gently using small, circular motions. You can customize the settings on your system to achieve the best results for your skin type. The company also offers three different brush heads for varying skin types. It is recommended that you replace the brush head every 3-4 months.
Does it REALLY work? Studies have shown that Clarisonic cleanses twice as effectively and removes makeup six times more effectively than your daily soap and washcloth routine. Some of the other benefits include healthier skin, fewer blemishes, fewer dry patches, decreased pore size, and softer skin. In just eight weeks you’ll notice an improvement (and a reduction) in the appearnace of fine lines and wrinkles.
My Thoughts: I have to admit that I was a tad bit nervous to use Clarisonic. Would it hurt? Would my skin be too sensitive? Not only is Clarisonic safe to use on all skin types, it’s so gentle that it can be used on a daily basis (twice a day if necessary). Even those who suffer from skin conditions such as acne, seborheic dermatitis, and rosacea can use Clarisonic. I have been using this every day and one of the very first things I noticed is that when I dry my face after using it, there is no makeup residue on the towel. My face feels a lot smoother and the pores on the bridge of my nose have gotten smaller (some have even disappeared). I also haven’t had as many breakouts. Every time I use it I feel like I’m getting a mini-facial.
The Clarisonic Skin Care System retails for $195 and can be purchased from the site or through retailers nationwide. If you purchase the system directly through the site, you’ll receive a free gift which includes a 0.5 ounce Daily Renewal Serum, travel bag, and headband AND you will receive free personalization (either a name or short message)
