The Juice On the OC Foodie Fest

August 25, 2010

My husband and I are total foodies.  Very often we’ll opt for ethnic cuisine when we go out because it’s not something we cook at home on a regular basis.

It seems a bit ironic to use “foodie” in the same sentence as “food truck.”  But this Saturday, the OC Foodie Fest is bringing 50 of the most popular, creative and unique food trucks to Southern California. Where else can you go to find garlic butter shrimp, Argentine empanadas, sushi, red velvet pancake bites, and ice cream sandwiches under one roof?

The OC Foodie Fest is where you’ll find local favorites featuring international and fusion cuisine and gourmet bites from well-known chefs like Chef Ludo Lefebvre who was featured on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters and the Food Network’s Iron Chef America.

Entertainment by local OC bands will include original music and dance performance.  Local vendors will offer accessories, clothing, handmade jewelry and more.  And Pretend City has partnered to bring a unique learning environment to the kid’s area.

A portion of sales will go back to local nonprofits Child S.H.A.R.E, and Pretend City Children’s Museum. Cart for a Cause will also be in attendance with a custom event menu, featuring a guest chef from a well-known local OC eatery.  Proceed will benefit St. Vincent Meals on Wheels.

OC Foodie Fest takes place at the Honda Center this Saturday, August 28th from 11 am to 7 pm.  Advance tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for children 12 & under, and free for children 3 and under.  A limited quantity of tickets will be available at the door for $15.  For more information, just visit their website.

The Juice On Walking With Dinosaurs

August 24, 2010

Last week, my 3 year old son and I had a heart-to-heart…it went something like this.

Me: Do you remember when we went to the museum in New York City and saw the dinosaurs?

Toddler: Yeah…

Me:  Were you scared of the dinosaurs?

Toddler: Um…yeah…

I then proceed to show him this clip.

Toddler:  I’m not gonna be scared of the dinosaurs.

The Dinosaurs are coming…to Southern California! The original company of Walking With Dinosaurs – The Arena Spectacular will end it’s 3 year tour at the Honda Center in Anaheim (September 1-5) and the Staples Center (September 9-12).  The show is based on the award-winning BBC Television Series and has played for over 4.1 million people in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Walking With Dinosaurs features ten species from the entire 200 million year reign of the dinosaurs and includes the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the Plateosaurus and Liliensternus from the Triassic period, the Stegosaurus and Allosaurus from the Jurassic period and Torosaurus and Utahraptor from the Cretaceous.  The largest of the dinosaurs, the Brachiosaurus, is 36 feet tall, and 56 feet from nose to tail (wow!).

The live show combines science, technology, scenery, puppetry and acting…How could it not be amazing?

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased via Ticketmaster.  You can also find a limited number of discounted tickets on Goldstar.

Who’s Your Nanny? *Giveaway*

August 16, 2010

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Sabrina. Congratulations!

Over the past two weeks, my husband and I have witnessed some pretty impressive 3 year old tantrums.  And without preschool as a buffer, my husband and I were wracking our brains in search of creative discipline.  We finally resorted to bribery with organic lollipops and all-natural Popsicles (I’m only half-joking).  It’s in moments like these where I wish I had a Nanny McPhee of my own to transform my children into little angels.

On August 20th, the family comedy Nanny McPhee Returns opens in theaters nationwide. I didn’t see the first one, but here is a brief synopsis from the site:

Oscar—winning actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson returns to the role of the magical nanny who appears when she’s needed the most and wanted the least in the next chapter of the hilarious and heartwarming fable that has enchanted children around the world. In the latest installment, Nanny McPhee appears at the door of a harried young mother, Mrs. Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. But once she’s arrived, Nanny McPhee discovers that Mrs. Green’s children are fighting a war of their own against two spoiled city cousins who have just moved in and refuse to leave. Relying on everything from a flying motorcycle and a statue that comes to life to a tree—climbing piglet and a baby elephant who turns up in the oddest places, Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach her mischievous charges five new lessons.

Win It! I have four family four-packs to give away along with some other movie-themed items (shirts, notebooks, etc.).  If you’d like your chance at attending a special pre-release screening this Thursday in Irvine, just leave a comment below before Wednesday, August 18th at 11:59 PM PST.  Tickets will be available for pick-up from me at the venue. Have You Heard? South Coast Loves Bloggers!

July 9, 2010

I learned how to shop from my mom. As a former New Yorker, she’d buy a new outfit every week during her time as a single woman.  Shopping was (and still is) our “thing.”  I grew up in LA, where there was no shortage of malls.  But on those weekends when we would make the trek down the OC, I had to visit South Coast Plaza.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of joining some of the most renowned LA and OC Fashion and Beauty Bloggers for a tour de plaza (South Coast, that is).  I have frequented this mall numerous times, but never quite this way.

The mall is unlike any other mall I’ve frequented (and I’ve been to malls all over the world).  The mall is actually a tourist destination and draws crowds from all over the world.  With over 250 boutiques, award-winning restaurants, , and spas, South Coast Plaza is internationally recognized as a premier shopping destination.  Where else will you find Oscal de la Renta, Tiffany & Co., and Diesel all under one roof?

Upon arrival, we were greeted with a light lunch and red velvet cupcakes made by Cat Cora in their VIP Access Suite.  VIP members receive free valet parking and free membership into the suite, which provides guests with a place to relax, store packages, and enjoy refreshments.  The suite features a Sports Lounge and a Zen room and is staffed by a Concierge who will provide complimentary refreshments/snacks, and attend to personal requests for restaurant and theater reservations.

After spending some time learning more about what’s new at the plaza, we headed over to our first stop…Tumi Boutique.  I’m passionate about travel and have visited nearly 20 countries across the globe.  Children have placed a minor stint in our global travel, but we still manage to take several U.S. vacations every year.

Tumi, “the leading brand of luxury travel, business, and lifestyle accessories,” offered several tips on packing like a “jet-setting pro.”  I always try to pack way too much with too little space and end up getting bogged down with luggage.  They sent us home with their Just In Case Tote, which will come in handy at BlogHer this year.  This lightweight, foldable tote comes in it’s own zip pouch and can be packed and used to bring home swag souvenirs or other items picked up along the way.  Additionally, they offer a variety of accessories like Packing Cubes and and Flat Folding Packs that help maximize space and keep things organized.

Now that we know how to pack, it’s time to figure out what to pack. If you’re a hip, New York woman, you shop at Henri Bendel.  This “girls’ playground” features chic, fashion-forward accessories, cosmetics, and gifts.  I could have easily taken home one of each!  But a few of their travel products stood out as must-haves.  Their Mini Flat Iron & Travel Pouch can be carried on or packed in your suitcase and comes in a heat-resistant pouch with a magnetic closure (brilliant!).  Their Tweezerman Set includes both fine point and slant tip tweezers in a suede and leather pouch.  This SoCal girl (that never wears socks) adores their Rivet Print Flip Flops.  They come in five fun colors and can be worn for beach days, summer nights out, or at the airport.  And speaking of beach days, I like their Disturbed Stripe Beach Towels.  Not only are they super-soft (I felt one!), they look fabulous.  They’re also huge!

While it still doesn’t feel like summer (what’s up with June gloom in July?), soon the heat will be upon us and I’ll be breaking out the tank tops and sundresses.  While I’m still in nursing bras, soon I hope to return back to a time where I could adapt my bra to my outfit (instead of the other way around).  If you’re one of the 85% of women who are wearing the wrong size bra, you must check out Intimacy (which just opened at South Coast Plaza in May).  Not only will they help you find a bra that really fits (they have over 90 bra sizes), they’ll identify bras that match your body type, wardrobe and style.

So once you’ve packed for the occasion, it’s time to ensure that you look good.  Our next stop was at Spa Nordstrom for a bronzing session.  With olive-colored skin, I thought it best to sit this one down. I did manage to capture Elizabeth getting her glow-on.  For $55, you can have a healthy glowing tan without sun or UV exposure.  It’s airbrushed on, takes seconds, and actually looks quite natural.

Before we ate the most incredible meal at one of the most impressive restaurants I’ve ever frequented, I browsed a few of their new stores.  Molton Brown, which originated in London, sells plant-based make-up, hair, body, skin and grooming products.  Their bath and body products smell incredible (without being too strong) and leave my skin feeling fresh and vibrant.  With over 100 tea varieties, Teavana tops my list of favorite tea venues.  And while I was there, I had to get my Williams-Sonoma fix. Their South Coast locations is one of the biggest in the LA/OC area.  Although I didn’t get an opportunity to visit, Free People (sister to Urban Outfitters) is now open.  The store is known for fresh, feminine fashion with vintage appeal.

Our day concluded with dinner at AnQi by Crustacean and a fashion show created with La Perla, specifically for the event.  This gourmet bistro and noodle bar features artfully presented Asian fusion cuisine.  They created a special menu for us, and I was very impressed with the taste and presentation of the food.

This summer, South Coast Plaza is offering two specials you may be interested in checking out:

1. Pack Your Bags Shopping Package (Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel):  Includes one-night accommodation with welcome amenity, Hotel Valet, $100 South Coast Plaza Gift Certificate, Complimentary Valet Parking, one-hour personal shopper/image consultant, ACCESS VIP Suite, and VIP Savings Passport (rates start at $525).

2.  Shopping Spree Special (Montage Laguna Beach):  Includes two-night, ocean-view accommodations, daily breakfast, VIP shopping excursion, VIP savings passport and passes to ACCESS VIP Suite (rates start at $545).

KidTrips: Raging Waters

July 1, 2010

With Summer now officially here, my husband and I have big plans for our children.  We’ve got beach days, park days, play dates, and museum days planned.  And…once June gloom disappears, we’re heading to Raging Waters.

I grew up going to the water park, which now offers three California locations.  Raging Waters is California’s largest Water Park and features 50 beautifully landscaped acres and 36 slides and attractions.  What’s great about Raging Waters is that it offers attractions for adults and it’s littlest guests.  Don Von Dark’s Tunnel of Terror is their newest attraction and features a 40 foot drop…in the dark!

Right now, you’ll save $7 off a general admission online purchase or $5 off a general admission purchase at the park with the coupon below (be sure to use the code 1067 for online purchases).

Be sure to follow Raging Waters on Twitter and Facebook as they frequently give away prizes including tickets and season passes.  And…if you’re an aspiring photographer, check out their contest to become a Photo VIP.  Simply submit your best Raging Waters photo and you could win the following for you and up to 7 friends:

(1) Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP 10 MP Waterproof Digital Camera
(1) VIP cabana for the day
(8) tickets to the park
(8) $10 food vouchers

Email your photo to RagingWatersPhotoVIP@gmail.com to enter. Your photo will be uploaded to their Flickr photo pool where it will be voted on by the public. The three photographer with the most views on a photo by July 6th will make it to the finals, where judges will select and announce a winner around July 7th .

Roy’s L.A. Ohana Tour

June 27, 2010

Last weekend, husband and I took a mini staycation in La Jolla.  Do you know what the BEST part about the trip was?  Sleep The FOOD!  We ate leisurely, hot 3 course meals at my favorite restaurant and slept in and enjoyed a late brunch the following morning afternoon.  We need to do that more.

If you didn’t already know (haha!), my husband and I are total foodies.  Last week, I had an opportunity to attend a Hawaiian Fusion tasting at Roy’s in Los Angeles.  I had an opportunity to taste Hawaiian food, but I really enjoy Asian cuisine so I thought I’d like it. Roy’s blends food and the “aloha” spirit to create a unique, ethnic dining experience which includes European techniques, Asian cuisine, and Hawaiian hospitality.  In my opinion, the food most closely resembles a mix between Japanese and Polynesian cuisines. Here are a few pictures from the tasting:

Grilled Albacore Flatbread

Yellow Fin Ahi Poke

Spiced Duck Confit Tarts

Short Ribs of Beef Au Poivre

Strawberry Basil Panna Cotta

The food was amazing (as you might have guessed from the pictures).  And it’s times like these that I really think about turning this rockin’ blog into a rockin’ food blog!  I tried everything except the cow beef (since I don’t eat any red meat).  Apart from the gorgeous presentation, the fusion of flavors was divine. I even managed to try duck, a food I’ve NEVER tried before.  I am excited about returning to the restaurant for a full meal with my husband.

Now through August 31, 2010, guests are invited to visit three Southern California Roy’s restaurants to receive dining rewards and be entered to win an all-inclusive trip to Hawaii, where guests will enjoy a personal dinner with founding chef Roy Yamaguchi. Here is a bit more information about Roy’s L.A. Ohana Tour:

  • An inaugural trip to a participating Roy’s restaurant, where guests are awarded an Ohana Tour card to present at the next Roy’s location
  • On the second visit, guests will receive a complimentary Chocolate Soufflé (with purchase of entrée)
  • At the third location, guests will receive a $20 gift card (with purchase of entrée)  and entry into the Hawaii sweepstakes

Roy’s Anaheim, Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Pasadena, and Woodland Hills are participating in the L.A. Ohana Tour. Each location’s menu varies, for a diverse dining experience.  For more information, just visit their website.

No compensation was received for this post. I attended a tasting and received a gift bag at the event.

The Juice on Kid’s Restaurant Week

June 26, 2010

My foodie husband and I are raising little foodies.  Other moms ask me how I coerce my son into eating things like broccoli and salmon or Japanese Teppan.  Or how it is that we can drive by a certain fast food chain without a meltdown.  My answer is simple…my children eat what we eat.

We eat out anywhere from one to several times a week, depending on our work schedules.  When I go out to eat, I want good food…real food…wholesome food.  Which is why I’m excited about Kids Restaurant Week, which starts Sunday, June 27th and runs through Saturday July 3, 2010.

Earlier today, we headed over to The District for the Kids Restaurant Week, launch party and had a “taste” of some of the deals that will be offered this week.  The week is focused on helping families dine together. RIDEMAKERZ Cruzes To Downtown Disney

June 18, 2010

Experiences (as opposed to “things”) are very important to our family.  On any given day you’ll find us at the park, the store (because shopping is an everyday experience), a museum or Disneyland.  This past week was busy…but in so many good ways.  On Wednesday, RIDEMAKERZ, “the first-ever customizing shop for one-of-a-kind radio control cars,” reopened at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA.  RIDEMAKERZ actually made a limited debut at Downtown Disney last Fall, which won them recognition as Worldwide Retail Store of the Year by Chain Store Age magazine.  But just before it opened at noon that day, some local bloggers had an opportunity to get a first-look at the store that offers over 649 million ways to build a car.

Gleaning inspiration from it’s neighbor (Build-A-Bear), RIDEMAKERZ offers children a unique, immersive experience…and the result is very much like the real thing.  Adults and children, boys and girls, will enjoy the process of customizing their ride.  After choozing from one of 70 models which include a Corvette, an F-250, and a MINI Cooper S, it’s time to get creative.  Street or Monster? Free-Wheel or Radio-Control? Everything from the wheelz and treadz to the lights and spoilers can be customized.

“Building” your unique car is actually quite simple and takes not time, given the electric tools stationed in the RZ Pit.  Once your ride is to your satisfaction, take it home in a RZ CRUIZECASE.

If you don’t happen to live in one of the six cities that houses a RIDEMAKERZ store, parents and children can participate in their online experience.

RIDEZ are priced from $10 to $32 depending on the body and paint scheme desired.  If you’d like a Radio-Control car, there is an additional $25 tagged on to that price.  Individual custom accessories range in price from $2 to $15.

Head on over to RIDEMAKERZ at Downtown Disney this weekend for their buy one, get one free offer on stock cars.

Spotlight On: World of Color

June 14, 2010

My very first trip to Disneyland was at the age of 2 (with pictures serving as my only memories). I’m old enough to remember PeopleMover, the Main Street Electrical Parade, and the Country Bear Jamboree (if you look behind you while riding The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, you’ll see three of the bears overhead).  I remember when Disney’s California Adventure Park was being built and Mickey’s Toontown was just a dream.  I have so many memories from the resort.  And while there is a familiarity when visiting, there is also excitement and anticipation because something is always being imagined.

World of Color debuted this past Friday at Disney’s California Adventure Park.  I saw the show on Thursday night and was captivated for the entire 25 minutes.  World of Color combines lights, water, music, fire and animation to tell some of Disney’s most cherished stories.  Walt Disney himself was the inspiration for the World of Color, which has been in production for five years. Walt Disney’s first color television series entitled Wonderful World of Color  aired from 1961 to 1969 and combined classic storytelling with innovative artistry (as the show does today).

Just the backdrop alone (animation projected on massive screens of water) is impressive.  World of Color engages 1,200 powerful and programmable fountains, and a vast underwater grid with more than 18,000 points of control.  The fountains can send water up to 200 feet, and when combined with the lighting, makes for a truly magnificent display.  The fountains literally come to life and tell their own story.

Many people identify with Disney because of their timeless stories. You’ve likely seen The Lion King, Toy Story, and The Little Mermaid. But not quite in this way. I particularly enjoyed the familiarity of the stories combined with the “newness” of how they were presented.

Technically, the show is a masterpiece.  The combination of color and water is a work of art.  The transitions are smooth, the music is moving, and the scenes captivating. My husband has yet to see the show, but I can’t wait to for his reaction.

There are several numerous hundreds of videos on YouTube of the show.  But that will only give you a taste of how spectacular the show is.  You Must. See. It.

Recommendations for viewing…

It’s going to be a busy summer at the resort.  And I have a lot more to share with you about “What’s Next” with Disney.  I highly recommend obtaining a FASTPASS for primary viewing (although I was told you can see the show from multiple locations around Paradise Bay).  You can obtain a FASTPASSat the Grizzly River Run FASTPASS terminals (you can line up at 7 am).  If you don’t get a FASTPASS (at some point during the day, they will run out), you can select from one their World of Color dining options as follows:

Picnic Meals

  • Beginning June 11, guests can go online (or via walk-up purchase at Sonoma Terrace and Golden Vine Winery) and order a special boxed picnic meal that includes “World of Color” Reserved Viewing.  Price:  $14.99
  • Picnic meals may be picked up at the Sonoma Terrace from 2 p.m. to 8pm. Reserved viewing tickets will indicate return time, location and show time.

Price Fixe Dinner Packages

Prix fixe meals are available at both Ariel’s Grotto and the Wine Country Trattoria restaurants, and they come with “World of Color” Preferred Viewing. Guests may order from a varied menu of seafood, meat and vegetarian options at Ariel’s Grotto (current price: $36.99 for adults; $20.99 for children ages 3-9) or a selection of Italian cuisine at Wine Country Trattoria (current price; $39.99 for adults; $18.99 for children ages 3-9). Restaurant seatings are at specified times and space is limited. Prix fixe meals must be reserved, at 714/781-DINE.

World of Color” will be presented twice nightly June 11 through Aug. 29 at 9 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.
