How Savvy Are You When It Comes to Holiday Safety? Published on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 by

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winners are Heather H and Georgia. Congrats!

This is perhaps my favorite time of year. It’s been brisk here in Southern California, and it’s truly starting to feel like Christmas. And while I’m busy prepping our home, shopping for friends and family, and exploring my inner foodie, I’ve also got safety on the brain. While it’s not something I readily think about during the holiday season, this time of year presents unique safety issues that can be avoided by simply recognizing and addressing them.

So what types of safety concerns should we all be cognizant of this holiday season?

If you plan on obtaining a live Christmas tree, be sure to water it regularly. Christmas trees that dry out pose a significant fire danger. By simply adding one quart of water per day for each inch of your tree trunk’s diameter, you’ll ensure that your tree looks and smells fresh.

With trimming the tree comes the decor…Mistletoe, holly berries, and Jerusalem cherries are just some of the plants that can be dangerous to small children. Additionally, ornaments and decor with small parts can pose a choking hazard. Be certain to keep these out of the littles’ reach and have the number for poison control readily accessible.

Given the precarious state of our economy, it’s wise to be discreet about purchases, particularly electronics. Avoid leaving boxes visible, announcing your purchases.

State Farm has a wealth of holiday-specific information to keep you and your family safe this season. I highly encourage you to check it out because there will be a test! : )

Win It! TWO of you will win a $50 Amazon gift card! Simply answer this short safety quiz in the comments and you’re entered to win. Short answers are perfectly acceptable. TWO winners will randomly be selected from the comments that answer all questions correctly. Comments will close on December 21st at 11:59 PM PST.

US Residents only. Duplicates and comments not including the above information will be disqualified. Comments are moderated. If you don’t see your comment in a reasonable amount of time, send me an email. Bloggers and non-bloggers may enter. If you don’t want to leave your email address, please be sure to check back for my announcement on the winner. Please note that winners must respond within 48 hours of being announced/contacted or another winner will be drawn.

Want an extra entry? Do any or all of the following and receive an extra entry for each one. Be sure to leave me a separate comment for each additional entry.

Follow me on Twitter and tweet the following (or something like it) “ I just entered a #giveaway to win an @amazon gift card @rockinmama http://tinyurl.com/79qby9h”
