Even at 4, my son still gets distracted when we’re out in public, often running to look at something interesting or exciting.  Each and every time we’re out, I remind him the importance of looking both ways before crossing the street, holding my hand, and staying close by.

October is International Walk to School Month, initiated to increase physical activity among children, improve air quality, and advocate for safer walking and biking routes. This month is all about educating and reinforcing pedestrian safety tips with your children such as looking both ways before crossing the street and holding a parent or another adult’s hand while crossing the road.

Last month, Chuggington, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) kicked off it’s nationwide Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe! campaign.  Created to educate parents and children about transportation safety, the campaign encourages families to take the Safety Pledge to always buckle up, wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, and only cross the street with an adult. The site offers a wealth of safety resources including a safety game which features characters from the hit Disney Junior show Chuggington teaching children about traffic safety.

The site includes a variety of age-specific and situational tips for children and parents. Parents can print games and activities for their children to engage in and children can watch videos on the site.
