World Breastfeeding Week *Giveaway* Published on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 by

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winners are Nelly R. and Angela W. Congrats!

I never imagined I’d still be nursing a toddler.  I told myself that around 1, I’d slowly begin weaning her.  But her one year birthday came and went and neither of us were ready to sever that part of our relationship.  She was also so sick with reflux and chronic ear infections that I felt it was important to continue giving her those much needed antibodies to help her immune system.

This week is World Breastfeeding Week and women from all over the world are coming together both physically and virtually to encourage and support nursing women. This week is about education, advocacy, and support. Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom nursing a toddler (that’s me!), or a working mom pumping to provide for your baby while you’re separated (that used to be me), know that breast milk is THE best food for your child and what you are doing matters.

I have pumped a lot in the past 4 years since my son was born.  Until a few months ago, it was the only way I could work and be separated from my daughter.  If you’re planning to exclusively breastfeed, but would like the option of going out to dinner with your significant other or to a movie with the girls, a manual breast pump is an affordable option.  While many might assume a manual breast pump is less effective than an electric pump, Philips AVENT Manual Breast Pump was clinically proven to be as effective as a hospital grade double electric pump (Source: Philips). Having worked with moms and babes my entire nursing career, I’ve seen the manual pump and it looks to quiet and comfortable. The pump naturally imitates a baby’s sucking pattern and is 100% BPA-free. At $39.99, the pump is just a fraction of what a double-electric pump would cost to rent or purchase.

Win It! Two of you will win a Philips AVENT Manual Breast Pump. Simply leave me a comment with a breastfeeding benefit for babies/toddlers.  Comments will close on August 16th, 2011 at 11:59 PM PST.

I breastfed our daughter right up til her 2nd bday. It was excellent bonding time. Now I’m enjoying breastfeeding our son. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Breast feeding is important to me, not only is it a great bonding experice between my baby and I, but it also provides healthy benefits for my child. I have to admit it was tough at first, but it gets easier. Another bonus is that you save money not having to buy formula.

I LOVE the AVENT manual breastpump. It saved me when I forgot the A/C adapter for my medela and I had to go buy a manual pump so my breasts didn’t explode. It was actually more effective than the medela and I used it so much it broke, which is why I’d love to win this so I can have a replacement!

Forgot the breastfeeding benefit for babies, it can actually help with developing healthy teeth and lead to fewer cavities than kids who haven’t been breastfed.

I’m breastfeeding my 13 month old son who I planned to wean at 6 months. Totally did not happen. I thought I’d wean him after his 1st birthday.. But we love it too much!!! Best decision of my life.

I honestly believe that my children have never had to see a physician because of breast milk. No ear infections, no one has ever vomited, no sickies! Breast milk has such amazing antibodies and healing powers.

I’ve heard it’s better for their immune systems and provides them with the perfect amount of nutrients … I’m expecting my first and cannot wait to breastfeed him :)

The milk your body makes is exactly what your baby needs. It is easily digestible and certainly more affordable than formula. My due date is tomorrow and as soon as junior gets here, I plan to breast feed exclusively.

  • by Shannon W August 10, 2011 at 10:29 am

I’m due with my first in November and am both excited and nervous about breastfeeding because I work full-time. But the nutritional benefits for the baby are worth it and I hope to save money not having to buy formula.

Breastfeeding helps improve babies immune system, I am really hoping that in October when baby #3 comes that the third time will be the charm and I am able to breastfeed him

  • by Erica H August 14, 2011 at 7:10 pm

Breastfeeding is great to help pass antibodies to the baby so they get sick less often and hopefully not as bad as they would without breastmilk!

Breastfeeding provides babies with the nutrients they need, and only mom can provide.

  • by audrey August 15, 2011 at 4:24 pm

Breastfed babies are often less sick and the closeness it provides is an awesome launching point for a great relationship with your baby.

  • by Melanie August 15, 2011 at 4:32 pm

There are 2000 nutrients in breast milk that can not be reproduced into formula. I am still nursing a toddler too!

  • by Angela Winesburg August 15, 2011 at 4:33 pm

  • by Jill L August 15, 2011 at 8:49 pm

When my daughter was in the NICU, the nurses would tell me all the time about how important it was for preemies to get their mommas milk if it was possible. It helps give them the very best start. Also have heard that breastfeeding helps to lower the risk of obesity for children.

It’s great bonding and it also helps reduce the mother’s chance of breast cancer. And it’s the healthiest for babes. It’s tailored to their needs and is constantly evolving just for them.
