With Easter and Earth Day falling within the same month, I thought I’d venture along the road of sustainability for my children’s baskets this year.  While we believe that Easter is much more than bunnies, eggs, and candy, we have decided to celebrate with egg hunts, a family meal, and a basket while reinforcing the true meaning of the holiday within them.

For most children, what’s inside is more important than the actual basket.  I dug out my son’s basket from last year and purchased another for my daughter.  Instead of plastic, opt for cloth or wood that can be reused.  We lined the baskets with colored grass made from recycled paper.

Since Easter is synonymous with candy, I opted for Green & Black’s Organic Chocolate, Annie’s Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks, and Late July’s Organic Whole Grain Chips. Rather than including plastic toys or eggs, I included a book my son told me he wanted and we dyed eggs naturally.

While I definitely think we can do more to celebrate a more sustainable Easter, here are a few tips we have been trying to follow:

Opt for organic, sustainable food items without artificial ingredients.

Save baskets, grass, etc. and reuse them next year, rather than throwing them away.

Avoid plastic.

Make it at home if you have the resources.
