I thank my mother for my love of reading.  As a child, teen, and young adult, you’d often find me with a book in hand. My husband and I are aiming to instill that same passion for reading within our children.  Because I’m all about being honest, I’ll admit that lately, we have not spent as much time reading with our son as we did when he was younger.  The three days he’s in school are long and we often don’t get in those 20 minutes until right before bedtime.  We’re much better about reading with him on his days off.

I’ve recently been reminded about how vital it is for children to be read to consistently.  Children benefit from regular reading time and often have a higher vocabulary and an easier time learning to read.  Book It!, the reading incentive program sponsored by Pizza Hut, has teamed up with Justin Bieber to remind parents of the value of reading and motivate children to read.  America’s Biggest Bedtime Story will return for it’s fourth year running on February 15th, 2011.  The webcast starts at 8 am CST on the 15th and will be available online until 11:59 PM CST on the 18th.  The read-along will feature Justin Bieber reading Dr. Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat, activities, tips on how to raise a reader and the opportunity to win prizes.

Last year, 215,000 people joined the webcast.  If that record is broken, Book It! will donate $25,000 to Pencils of Promise, a global movement that partners with local communities to build schools in the developing world.

Do you read to your child for 20 minutes every day?  If not, you’re not alone.
