What’s New Cupcake? *Giveaway* Published on Monday, May 24, 2010 by

This giveaway is now closed. Congrats to the winner Joni T #10!

When I want to relax, I bake.  I started baking with my mom when I was a child and it’s been a hobby of mine for many years.  I’m definitely not Martha Stewart but I enjoy baking everything from cakes and pies to breads and scones from scratch.

A couple of weeks ago, I had an opportunity to participate in an online chat with What’s New Cupcake authors Karen Tack and Alan Richardson.  The book takes the art of cupcake decorating to a new level. The book solely focuses on decorating (as opposed to recipes) and includes numerous EZ decorating ideas (few ingredients + simple techniques) in each chapter.  When you look at the photographs in this book, it’s difficult to believe these cupcakes are edible.  Some of my favorites include Stuffed Turkeys (you’ve got to see them to believe this), Indian Corn, An Apple a Day, Robocup, Chinese Takeout and Hold the Anchovies (in the shape of a pizza).  If you’re entertaining, you’ll find plenty of holiday-themed cupcake ideas that would make lovely centerpieces.

Some of the tips Karen and Alan shared include tinting your own sugar or coconut with McCormick’s Food Colors, substituting almond, coffee or soda extract for vanilla extract to give your cupcakes a unique taste, or giving your cupcakes a “boost” with buttermilk.  I also like their idea to have a cupcake decorating party for kids.  You can simply pre-bake cupcakes, then set up stations with frosting, sprinkles, etc.

For more cupcake decorating ideas, check out McCormick’s DIY section.

Win It!!! One of you will win a DIY toolkit (ARV $150) which includes everything shown in the picture (perfect for cupcake decorating!).  Simply leave me a comment with a recipe you liked from the site.  Comments will close on June 7, 2010 at 11:59 PM PST.  One comment per person, please (unless you do the extra credit). US residents only. Duplicates and comments not including the above information will be disqualified. Comments are moderated. If you don’t see your comment in a reasonable amount of time, send me an email. Bloggers and non-bloggers may enter. If you don’t want to leave your email address, please be sure to check back for my announcement on the winner. Please note that winners must respond within 48 hours of being announced/contacted or another winner will be drawn. Want an extra entry? Do any or all of the following and receive an extra entry for each one.

Be sure to leave me a separate comment for each additional entry.
