Spring Into Action *Giveaway* Published on Friday, April 9, 2010 by

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by!  The winner is Maja Meza #132.  Congrats!

The weather is warming up, the days are getting a bit longer, and Spring is in full swing!  Last year we “flipped for fall.”  Now it’s time to Spring Into Action with Aller-Ease and The Motherhood!  Stay tuned!  This weekend I’ll be posting a video that will tell you everything you want to know about sprucing up your home this spring.

As a veteran allergy sufferer, I’ve found that certain seasons tend to exacerbate the symptoms.  Spring happens to be one of those seasons.  After months of being indoors with the windows mostly shut, allergens have had an opportunity to proliferate.  This spring, I’m organizing, decluttering, and deep cleaning the most trafficked parts of our home to elminate those triggers.

I use protective bedding and pillows from Aller-Ease year round to elminate some of the most abundant allergens in our home.  Since a large portion of our life is spent in bed sleeping (nearly a third of our lifetime), it’s important to do what I can to elminate things like dust mites.  Here is a scary fact:

Lying beneath the cleanest, most luxurious linens and inside the fluffiest pillows lurk microscopic allergy and asthma triggers, including dust mite droppings, pollen, fungal and mold spores, and pet dander. The average bed can contain up to 10 million dust mites and mattresses can double in weight every 10 years due to microscopic allergens that accumulate inside.

Since we covered up most of our mattresses and pillows over the last several months, I’ve noticed an overall decrease in all of our allergy symptoms (although I have to admit that this year’s cold and flu season was the worst ever!).  Aller-Ease‘s protective bedding systems utilize “innovative fabric innovative fabric engineering techniques to provide a range of allergen-filtration bedding products, including a breathable, cotton product that filters up to 95% of all particles at the one-micron size.”

What I like about their products is that they’re easy to use, affordable, and comfortable.  I’ve slept on the mattress and pillow protectors that are stiff, rough or noisy.  Aller-Ease‘s products conveniently fit into your lifestyle and soon become part of your routine.

Win It! One of you will win an Aller-Ease prize pack that will include 1 pillow, 2 pillow covers, and 1 queen mattress cover!  Simply leave me a comment with one fabulous Spring Cleaning tip!  Comments will close at 11:59 PM PST on April 12, 2010 (so HURRY!). But wait….there is MORE!   There are 15 bloggers on this campaign doing the exact same thing so you want to make your tip good.  Why?  Because there will be yet ANOTHER giveaway to 3 overall bloggers/readers (over all 15 sites) who provide the best tips (selected at random).  Don’t worry….you don’t have to enter separately.  You’ll automatically be entered by providing a tip here.  The prize packs will include the following:

-Basket Contents:
*    1 pillow
*    1 queen cotton mattress protector
*    2 queen cotton pillow protectors
*    Kleenex
*    Halls Cough drops

I empty a room of everything possible. Next clean top to bottom, Now put back only what you need or really really want.
What’s left sort in boxes of donate, relocate or return to owner, and of course trash.

When your done with a room, take a picture to remember it by and move on to next. Trust me you will get a kick out of the picture years from now!

Rubbing alchohol removes stains from countertops, tile, and marble without abrasives.

    Thank you. :-)

  • by Marci April 11, 2010 at 11:42 am

My fave is to go from room to room. This may take a week or more, but at least each room gets done.

Helpful hint: When removing a full trashcan liner, be sure to put a handful of them in the bottom under a new liner. That way when you take the garbage out you will always have a new liner ready.

I use the three bin system to go through closets, drawers and cupboards. One bin for keep, one for trash and one for donate. It helps to de-clutter

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 12:44 pm

To get the grout on my counters especially clean and non toxic I use vinegar and baking soda.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 12:53 pm

I have a retractable clothes line that I use to hang up my area rugs and give them a good airing out on a nice sunny spring day.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Cut a lemon in half, put the pieces in a microwave-safe bowl with water to cover, and cook on High for two to three minutes in the micro. The steam will soften hardened food inside the oven while you enjoy the citrus scent.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 1:01 pm

Hopefully cold and flu season is over, but I go through the medicine cabinets to get rid of any expired medications.

Just learned how dirty kids bath toys, so I recently ran all mine sons toys through the sanitize cycle on the dishwasher.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 1:13 pm

To clean the upholstery of unwanted odors sprinkle stale cushions and chairs with baking soda, then vacuum after letting it sit for a while.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Vacuuming before cleaning will make the cleaning process easier and faster. Use your vacuum’s crevice attachment to get into tight spaces and reach under cabinets.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 1:22 pm

my spring cleaning tip is when you buy something for the house think about how you are going to clean it .

  • by Karen April 11, 2010 at 2:50 pm

TIP: Leave the Scrubbing Bubbles to soak before you actually begin to scrub = less scrubbing

  • by Karen April 11, 2010 at 2:51 pm

TIP: When reasonable, leave your shoes at the door….it tracks less dirt in to the house = less clean up.

  • by Diane Baum April 11, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Spring tip have your outside windows cleaned professionally once a year.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 2:58 pm

I bathe my window blinds every other year. I vacuum the blinds first to remove as much dirt as possible. Then dip them in water mixed with a few drops of mild dish soap. The bathtub works well for this type of chore.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 2:59 pm

To clean the winter odor out of carpets try sprinkling plain baking soda on them. Use a clean spice container that has a removable lid with holes, and cover all of the carpets with a light dusting of baking soda. Allow the baking soda to remain on the carpets overnight, and in the morning, vacuum away the odors.

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Dirty window screens can be easily cleaned using a steam cleaner

  • by Trina April 11, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Rather than doing it all at once I commit to doing a little bit of cleaning every day for the entire season. Partky because with a baby it is hard to get a block of time to get it all done.

  • by Rosie April 11, 2010 at 4:01 pm

In these tough economic times, I know a lot of people trying to make some extra money and what better way to do that then to sell the things you no longer need? I have new to slightly used items from books to electronics that I have sold on Craigslist and Amazon. So far I’ve made over a thousand dollars in the last year selling things on those two sites. It’s so true that one person’s trash can be another person’s treasure, although I admit that my things are pretty darn good and I take care of them well so that they are able to be sold later. It’s a great way to make money and clear out some space in the house.

  • by Sherri B. April 11, 2010 at 4:18 pm

My biggest spring cleaning tip is to wash EVERYTHING! Take down the curtains…pull up the rugs! Another great thing to do is shake everything out outside and shake them out good before washing. Put the dust outside and not in your washing machine! Thanks!

I keep a cardboard box on my porch & whenever I find something in my home that I no longer use I toss it in the box. When it’s full I take the box to my local charity. Keeps unwanted clutter out of the house!.

Keeping it simple by doing a room at a time… OH and my washer gets a workout during those days…

  • by TheAngelForever April 11, 2010 at 6:30 pm

My best spring cleaning tip: When we switch out the flannel sheets and put on cotton sheet we also clean the bed. We use our vacuum cleaner and go under the bed, around the bed and on the mattress itself. Time to get rid of skin cells, dust and other items that may be on the bed since the last time it was done.

Make sure that you don’t forget to clean your dryer vents well at this time. It’s simple to remove the lint filter screen and vacuum down inside. Also pull out the dryer and vacuum the back out. I also pull out my fridge and vacuum the coils, remove the air conditioner floor vents and vacuum down there. Make sure to replace and/or clean and ac filters.

My spring cleaning tip: I learned this off of a baby site; I put the kid’s stuffed toys in the top shelf of the dishwasher and run it. They say it’s better for them then the washer that spins them around and around. It’s great for baby toys and cloth books too!

  • by alissa apel April 12, 2010 at 7:29 am

  • by alissa apel April 12, 2010 at 7:32 am

My spring cleaning tip 4: The Magic Eraser is great for refrigerator handles, bathtubs, glass stove tops, and grease under the stove.

  • by alissa apel April 12, 2010 at 7:34 am

My spring cleaning tip 3: Take your shoes off at the door. That way your not tracking dirt/pollen into the house. Get an under the bed shoe storage for your winter shoes that you are not wearing.

  • by alissa apel April 12, 2010 at 7:35 am

My spring cleaning tip 5: Get rid of all dated medicine’s. They shouldn’t be around if they are expired. Many cities have drives at the grocery store that take care of your expired/unused meds for you.

  • by alissa apel April 12, 2010 at 7:38 am

My spring cleaning tip 6: Clean with Distilled Vinegar and water. This is less toxic then many cleaners bought at home, and doesn’t smell. It seems like vinegar would smell, but the water neutralizes it.

Okay I have a few good tips-
    1) bribe your kids- hey- it works!!!
    2) put on amazing rock music (or whatever gets you motivated)
    3) enlist a friend- swap the chores you are best at and most despise or even just having the company makes it seems less like drudgery – everything is better with friends and laughter.

Using vinegar for cleaning is a great spring cleaning tip. Works good on windows.

  • by Pamela S April 12, 2010 at 1:35 pm

I’m a big list maker so I make a list of all the chores I need to do and pick a few to do each day, so that way I don’t feel so overwhelmed. I’m another who uses vinegar often in my cleaning. And I LOVE the Mr. Clean magic eraser!! Thanks so much!

The key to good cleaning and organization in any busy household is that you get a good label maker, you make sure everything in your home has its place and then you label that place so that things can easily be put back by anyone in the home that uses them.

  • by Lucy Schwartz April 12, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Make alist and check it twice. But not to get overwhelmed . Make a cleaning list for 1 room at time.

  • by Trina April 12, 2010 at 3:09 pm

Use shaving cream to clean furniture, carpets, rugs (not delicates that will easily fall apart) instead of having to pay to get it cleaned or buy new ones. Stains come out and it smells good too (not for deep stains).

Best window cleaner ever. Take 1/2 cup of cornstarch and mix with a gallon of water. Mix very good, then you can either pour some in spray bottle or you can pour some in a container. Then start cleaning. Really good stuff. If you have really dirty windows you might need to do a couple of times. Good tip for going green, also.

To get rid of the musty smell in your washer, especially if front loader. The Maytag Man told me to run powdered dish detergent (any brand) through my machine once a month (with no clothing in it) and it would do away with the smell. It has worked for me. Hope it works for you!

Fast and easy way to clean your freezer, use a fan. Simply empty the freezer and direct at top speed in front of a stand up or on top of a chest freezer. The frost will melt in a matter of minutes! No need to wrap the food to keep it frozen as it will be returned to the freezer in less than 1/2 hour.

To clean fabric lamp shades, use a lint roller. Can also be used to clean carpeted stairs.

A green way to clean kitchen or sink drains. First we use a plunger to loosen the clog enough to get the water to drain, then we pour 1/2 a box of baking soda in the drain, followed by white distilled vinegar. I’ve never measured out the amount of vinegar I’ve used, but know it is 1/4 of a large bottle. Wait 15 minutes and add another splash of vinegar followed by running very hot water for 5 minutes.

My tip is, if you haven’t used it within the past year, throw it out.

  • by Suzanne K April 12, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Not a super tip, but I find the hardest part is getting started. So, I pick a relatively small task/project and get it done. Looking at the completed job gives me satisfaction and motivation to continue on with others…

To clean wood floors add hot water and up to six tea bags to a bucket. Make it strong. The tannic acid in tea is really, really good for wood floors.

my tip is vacuum those dust bunnies – not just under the bed, but in the closet too!! I find that when I am hit hard with allergies, my system is compromised and what doesn’t normally bother me will during this season… like dust bunnies. I don’t know how they collect in the closet – but they do. I take everything off the floor and vacuum and also on the top shelf

to make a point to my daughter that cleaning is necessary i have her help me with the dusting or wiping. she really likes it and it teaches her responsibility. so involve kids in the little cleaning that they can help with!
