When I think about going green, I don't immediately think about the clothing my family wears. But cotton, the textile that a majority of our clothing is derived from, is considered one of the dirtiest crops due to it's heavy use of insecticides, the most hazardous pesticide to human health (Organic Trade Association). Did you know that cotton uses approximately 25... Read More »

Last week, the kidlets and I headed out to Paramount Studios to meet the rockin' members of The Fresh Beat Band! It's actually one of the shows I not only tolerate, but enjoy. The show, which is geared towards preschoolers, is centered on four best friends in a band who attend music school together and enjoy singing and dancing. Nickelodeon offers both 30 minute... If it weren't for my water bill, I might not realize how much water we're using. In 2009, the Department of Energy estimated that a family of four spends over $400 a year on showers (based on a 10-minute shower). Now, that might be just a bit less since I'm lucky if I get even a 5 minute shower in. But we consume water in many other ways...rinsing dishes, wateri... Read More »

I didn't grow up eating organic food, recycling, or being mindful of my consumption of water, energy, etc. Environmental concerns, while not new, have only recently received public awareness. My hope is that my children will grow up "greener" than I was raised.
There are many ways to involve, educate, and inspire children to care for themselves and their enviro... Read More »

Because "natural," "hypoallergenic," and "pure" are largely unregulated terms, I find this step to be the most difficult. There are times when I feel like I'd have to be a scientist to understand the ingredients on the back of my body wash, shampoo, and hand cream. Fortunately, there are resources like Skin Deep and Campaign for Safe Cosmetics to offer guidance an... Read More »

Last week, I had an opportunity to sit in on green-focused webinar hosted by Silk Soy Milk. Terra Wellington, who authored the book "The Mom's Guide to Growing Your Family Green: Saving the Earth Begins at Home,"shared some practical, attainable ways to "go green." When I was young (er) and single, I bought a new outfit almost every week (indulgent?). This was a little treat to myself as a hard-working professional. Fast forward 5 years and I can't remember the last time I purchased a wardrobe piece that wasn't titled "maternity" or "nursing." That is, until a couple of weeks ago when I went on a shopping adventure at T.J.... Read More »

Plastic is everywhere. It's how many of the products we purchase are manufactured and packaged. It's in toys and baby bottles...it houses food and household cleaners. Two years ago, I was lucky if I found one or even two companies that utilized safe plastics ( BPA-free) in their infant bottles. Today, their is no shortage of plastic alternatives to baby bo...
