National Kids & Pet Day *Giveaway* Published on Saturday, April 24, 2010 by

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Jean D. Congrats!

For as long as I can remember, we’ve had a dog in our house.  First it was Tiny, the Chihuahua that didn’t like men.  Next it was Springer, who wasn’t the smartest spaniel on the block.  Then came Patch, who had one blue eye and one brown eye and multiple personalities to match.  He could climb his way through windows and fences, leaving a path of destruction behind him.  Niko is our latest rescue.  He is half Maltese, half terrier and the cutest, white fluff around (he’s pictured to the right).

April 26th is National Kids and Pet Day and Kroger is celebrating by sharing information about pet safety, selecting the right pet for your family and making sure your family’s animal friends are taken care of.  If you’ve ever had a dog, you know how much a part of the family they become.  In some ways, taking care of a pet is like taking care of a child.  The responsibility of feeding them, walking them, playing with them, and caring for them is huge.

Kroger, one of the nation’s largest grocers, offers pet insurance (which is something I just learned) through PetFirstPet insurance policies, which are available at over 2,400 Kroger family stores, cover routine care and medical procedures for dogs and cats and can be used at veterinarians nationwide.  Coverage starts as low as $9.95 a month and reimbursement typically takes two weeks.  Right now, if you purchase a plan online, you can save $10.

Did you know that Kroger has a Pet Health blog?  It launched in February and offers information on everything from how to potty train your puppy to children and safe pet play.  I found several tips to be handy, particularly since my 2 year old likes to pester play with Niko:

  • Teach your children to pet softy, stay away from food dishes, toys and bones, and not to startle your dog or cat when it is sleeping.
  • Keep babies and toddlers at a level higher than your dog. Dogs perceive height as representative of their hierarchy. Keep your children off the floor when the dog is in the room.
  • Don’t give your dog toys that resemble your children’s toys or clothing. Stay away from fabric stuffed dog toys that resemble your child’s stuffed animals.
  • Involve your child in your dog’s care. Even just the presence of your child in the same room while your dog is receiving his favorite things or activities can help build a positive association to children.

For more information on Kroger’s Pet Insurance Policies, just visit their website.

Win It! One of you will win a $20 gift card to Kroger (it can be used at ALL Kroger stores including Ralph’s, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, etc.).  Simply leave me a comment with something you liked or learned on their site.  Comments will close on May 9, 2010 at 11:59 PM PST.  One comment per person, please (unless you do the extra credit). US residents only. Duplicates and comments not including the above information will be disqualified. Comments are moderated. If you don’t see your comment in a reasonable amount of time, send me an email. Bloggers and non-bloggers may enter. If you don’t want to leave your email address, please be sure to check back for my announcement on the winner. Please note that winners must respond within 48 hours of being announced/contacted or another winner will be drawn. Want an extra entry? Do any or all of the following and receive an extra entry for each one.

Be sure to leave me a separate comment for each additional entry.

“For helping raise awareness of National Kids & Pet Day I was provided with a $20 gift card to spoil {the pet in my life} and a $20 gift card to giveaway to a reader so that they could do the same by the Global Influence Network and the Kroger Co. The thoughts and opinions here are my own.”

I learned – Kittens especially need veterinarian care when they are young. Vaccinations, spaying or neutering and blood tests are just a few things that your kitten may need. The pet insurance preferred plan for pets 8 weeks to 9 years of age, is an excellent plan for families adding a kitten or young cat to the household. The preferred plan covers your new kitten’s annual exam, microchipping, prescription flea control and more.

Thanks for the giveaway…I enjoyed reading the health section for dogs: sugar-free gum and candy are very toxic to dogs, artificial sweetener found is these products is xylitol which can be deadly to a dog. Also, raw salmon can kill your dog.
