Holiday Lattes from Got Milk?

December 6, 2009 by Caryn

A little known fact about me is that I really, really like coffee (so much so that before I was pregnant, you could find me at any given OC coffee shop daily).  I try to justify my semi-coffee addiction by telling myself that my froofy coffee drinks are healthy because they usually contain about 3/4 milk.  It just so happens that I’m right!  Lattes, in particular have can have up to a serving of milk (depending on their size).

Last week I was invited to a fun, family event hosted by Got Milk? Award-winning barista Heather Perry served up some amazing holiday lattes, a healthy alternative to conventional holiday drinks.  And if you make your own lattes, you’ll save a ton since a single coffee drink can cost upwards of $3.

The fact that I’m pregnant did not stop me from trying each and every one (some twice!).  The baristas were kind enough to make them all decaf but I was up til 2 am that night….wired!  Here are my favorites!

pumpkin lattePumpkin Spice Latte

Ingredients:

2 oz. espresso or strong brewed coffee

2 tbsp. pumpkin pie mix out of the can

8 oz. milk

Directions: Combine espresso and pumpkin pie and mix well.  The nice thing about the pumpkin pie mix is it already has all the spices needed.  If you only have canned pumpkin, use 2 tbsp. canned pumpkin, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon and 1/2 tsp. nutmeg.  Top with warmed milk and enjoy this traditional holiday treat.

Tres Leches LatteTres Leches Latte

Ingredients:

8 oz. milk

2 tbsp. sweetened condensed milk

2 oz. fresh espresso or strong brewed coffee

4 oz. heavy whipping cream

2 tbsp. powdered sugar

To finish: whipped cream and maraschino cherry

Directions:  Combine whipping cream and powdered sugar and whip until forms stiff peaks. In a mug, combine freshly brewed espresso and sweetened condensed milk and mix well. Steam milk and pour on espresso.  Top with a scoop of fresh whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

These lattes are so easy I can make them!  You can lighten them up by using nonfat milk or drink them in place of dessert (don’t forget the whipped cream).
