There are some things in life that are best taught by a children’s book.  Bodily functions are one of them.  As a nurse, I have no reservations discussing subjects most people would shy away from.  But how do you explain something like gastroenteritis to a 2 year old?

My son recently had Rotavirus and I have to admit that it was very difficult to explain to him why he had “runny poop.”  So we broke out The Moose With Loose Poops and started reading all about Miles and his bout with gastroeneritis.  Here is a little more information about the book from the site:

It is my belief that children should be taught the correct terminology for bodily parts and functions.  The Moose With Loose Poops is actually quite cute and amusing.  It provide factual information in a way that children will understand.  I like how comforting the mother is in the story.  She tell little Miles what he most likely will experience and provides reassurance throughout the entire book.  The illustrations are appropriately realistic and provide a great starting point for discussion.

The book also comes with a Parent Guide which includes tips on “Getting Through Gastroenteritis.”  This pamphlet provides information on what gastroenteritis is and how to know if a child has it, when to call the doctor, complications, home management, and prevention.
