Accuracy When You Need It Most….Exergen TemporalScanner Published on Sunday, April 5, 2009 by

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Stephanie V.  Congrats!

There are times when a product I’m about to review, comes at just the right time in my life.  My son is FINALLY over Rotavirus (which by the way is THE worst childhood illness we’ve experienced in his 22 months of life) and while it’s been a miserable 2 weeks, I’m really glad I had an Exergen TemporalScanner Temporal Artery thermometer in the house.  As a nurse, you’d think that I was an expert at every thermometer on the market.  Well…surprise, surprise.  Up until we received this thermometer, I took my son’s temperature the conventional way…under the arm or rectally.  Taking a squirmy toddler’s temperature when he’s sick is difficult and often requires multiple attempts to ensure an accurate reading.

child-abc

I’ve never actually used an ear thermometer, but according to a Harvard Medical School study, the TemporalScanner was proven to be more accurate.  I have always been told by doctors in my field of expertise that ear thermometers vary in terms of accuracy.  Accuracy is dependent upon both the product and the user.  When my son is sick, I want accuracy and I want it as soon as possible. I don’t want to have to take his temperature 3 times (which I’ve done) until I THINK I have it right. The TemporalScanner provides an accurate temperature in two seconds.  Here is a little more information about the thermometer from the site:

The TemporalScanner thermometer is a non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements. Advanced, patented technology measures temperatures with a gentle stroke across the forehead.

Using the thermometer is very easy and it doesn’t require a license (hehe).  Once you’ve inserted the battery, place the probe flush with the center of the forehead.  Depress the scan button and slide the scanner across the forehead towards the temple.  Release the button and read the temperature.  Here is a little video I did with my son:

temporal2

When my son first saw the thermometer, he didn’t want anything to do with it (as is typical of sick toddlers).  So I let him play with it and watch mommy and daddy scan each other’s foreheads.  Of course, he then wanted his forehead scanned too!  One of the things I should mention is that we started scanning without taking the protective plastic cover off (don’t do that!).  I thought tempeartures of 82 degrees were just a tad low! So…read the manual or go on the website and THEN use the thermometer (not the other way around!).  I like that it’s quick, non-invasive and accurate.  I took my son’s temperature several times and got the same reading (plus or minus a few tenths of a degree).

There is an entire science involved with why the temporal artery provides the most accurate reading, but I’ll let you read all about that on the site.  The TemporalScanner retails for around $50 and can be found at retailers nationwide including Walmart (it’s less than $30 here) and Babies R Us.

Win It! One of you will receive an Exergen TemporalScanner!  Simply head on over to the site and take a look around. Come back here and leave me a comment with a fact about the thermometer that was not mentioned on the site (there is a lot of information you can comment on).  Comments will close on April 19, 2009 at 10 PM PST.  One comment per person, please (unless you do the extra credit). A Fact: Arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature. That’s what the Exergen TemporalScanner takes!

    I didn’t realize the best place to take someone’s temperature was their heart, because of the blood flow there.

  • by Tawnda April 6, 2009 at 3:36 am

    The temporal temp is the temp of blood flowing fron the heart so it is much more accurate than other methods… There are less modifying factors and you don’t need to even wake them up to get a reading fast…

    The temporal artery thermometer scans the forehead area for the temporal artery and it is almost impossible to miss the artery during a scan. Unlike with the ear probe it’s easy to get inaccurate readings.
    I know this for a fact.. The last 4 months I have been to my GYN 6 times. Each time they took my temp with an ear probe. Every time it read that I had a temp of over a 100. I was perfectly healthy each time I was there. I will have to make sure to tell them to get one of these when I am in for my next appt nest week..

    I learned that A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers. The temporal artery thermometer scans the forehead area for the temporal artery and it is almost impossible to miss. this sounds amazing.

    First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses and;
    Second, at the same time, a patented system measures the ambient temperature of the site where the temperature is being taken. The patented “arterial heat balance” (AHB) software then synthesizes the two separate readings to accurately determine and display body temperature

    The TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. This unique process determines temperature by accurately measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling (warming) caused by heat loss (gain) to the environment. wow great giveaway thanks.

    ambient temperature affects the skin temperature, and so the thermometer automatically measures the ambient temperature at the very same time it is measuring the temperature over the temporal artery.

    In trying not to duplicate a comment, I will say that I learned the company takes their product so seriously (as well they should) that they are currently in court over patent infringement. The product is one they have been working on since 1980, and one they are proud to call their own.

    “As you gently stroke the thermometer across the forehead crossing over the temporal artery, the sensor in its probe performs two processes:
    First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses and;
    Second, at the same time, a patented system measures the ambient temperature of the site where the temperature is being taken. The patented “arterial heat balance” (AHB) software then synthesizes the two separate readings to accurately determine and display body temperature.”

  • by Ellie W April 17, 2009 at 4:32 pm

    A fact that I did not know is the most accurate place to measure temp is in the center of the heart but the temporal artery is directly connected to the aorta. That’s very interesting.

  • by sharon April 18, 2009 at 12:31 am

    This is how the temporal scanner thermometer works: First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses and; Second, at the same time, a patented system measures the ambient temperature of the site where the temperature is being taken. The patented “arterial heat balance” (AHB) software then synthesizes the two separate readings to accurately determine and display body temperature.

  • by christopher h April 18, 2009 at 12:59 am

  • by Paula Harmon April 18, 2009 at 6:14 am

    Here’s a fact: The best place to measure temperature is the center of the heart, but this can be done only under a doctor’s supervision. Doctors know that measurement of the blood temperature in a major artery accurately reflects true body temperature. The TemporalScanner Thermometer is designed to measure the temperature of the skin surface over the temporal artery, a major artery of the head.
    I’d love this prize, because I thought I was smart by using a good old fashioned glass thermometer with the mercury line in it and when I was shaking it to get the line down, it flew out of my hands and broke in the bathtub!

    The scanner works VERY much like a laser mouse, taking infrared “pictures” about every millisecond (about one thousand per second) while watching for a specific pattern indicating “ahah, temporal artery detected, Cap’n!!”. THEN it figures out which was the best picture to yield the right hot-and-cold gradients, and finally measures just how hot was the peak temperature detected. Very impressive, watching technology just keep on keeping on, making life better and simpler. Thanks for the chance here!
