New On DVD: Meerkat Manor Published on Monday, January 12, 2009 by

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks so much for stopping by.  The winners are Erica C, Dan Smith, Sito, Catherine Copeland, and Erma.  Congratulations!

Hey all of you Animal Planet lovers…on January 27th, Meerkat Manor Season 4:  The Next Generation makes it’s debut from Genius Products and Animal Planet.  If you’re wondering what a meerkat is, Wikipedia says it’s a small mammal and member of the mongoose family inhabiting parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and South Africa. Here is a little more information about the upcoming DVD release:

Meerkat Manor is a docu-series that has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards.  The series returns following the tragic death of everyone’s favorite, Flower.  The leadership of the Whiskers clan is assumed by her daughter Rocket Dog.   Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Stockard Channing narrates the next chapter in the Whiskers family’s struggle for dominance and survival in the Kalalhari Desert.  Meerkat Manor is filmed using state of the art camera technology above and below ground. By tracking the group’s movements 24 hours a day, the beloved series paints a dramatic picture of the Whiskers’ highly complex and social lives, conveying an archetypal tale of family feuds and fierce factions that threaten to destroy the clan.

You can purchase Meerkat Manor starting January 27th for $24.95.

Win It!  5 lucky readers will win a copy of Meerkat Manor. I have only seen clips of this show — when Flower died, mostly — as I do not have cable or satellite TV. It’s looks fascinating and I’d love to own at least one season’s worth of it. I learned that Meerkats are related to mongooses (mongeese?) and I am going to back to continue my exploration of meerkat anatomy!

I learned that meerkats are amazingly altruistic creatures. Adult meerkats will feed hungry young, even if they are not their own. They also take turns volunteering for guard duty, even though they are missing out on valuable foraging time. Fascinating little critters. Thank you for the chance to win.

  • by Kelli January 24, 2009 at 9:33 pm

    I learned from Wilson:
Cut from a different cloth than his black-hearted Commando parents, Wilson has grown into the latest Kalahari Casanova. This handsome young kat is perfecting the love ‘em and leave ‘em art of the rover. His claim to fame? Two sisters in one afternoon.

When Wilson shows up, you can bet there’s love in the dunes. This crafty kat has all the right moves to evade angry fathers and overprotective brothers while wooing innocent babysitters.

You see, my last name is Wilson and we love the meerkcat Wilson because he is like my husband (ROFL!). Okay all joking aside we humans could really learn a lot from Meerkats, the sociability, the family values, everything we are turning out not to be nowadays they are.

Thank you for the chance to win Rockin’ Mama, I have a Animal Planet lovin’ family at my house, especially our son, so we would love to win.

Meerkats (or Suricata suricatta) are about the size of a squirrel, although they’re actually relatives of the mongoose. They have only four toes on each foot, and they stand about 10 to 12 inches tall
