Calling All Soccer Fans! Published on Monday, January 19, 2009 by

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Tammy!  Congratulations!

Here is my fondest memory of “football” (also known to us Americans as soccer):

We had just arrived in Paris and were headed over to the Champs-Élysées. As we walked closer to one of the THE most famous streets in world, we could hear the victory cries of the Portugese (yes…that’s not a typo) as they honked, hollered, and hooted their way down the Rodeo Drive of Paris. That was one of many interesting nights spent backpacking with my husband in Europe. The one thing I learned from that experience was that the Europeans are serious about soccer! And while I could go on and on about how the Europeans celebrate or mourn their World Cup victories and losses (does the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof ring a bell to anyone? hubby?) , I have much more important things to share with you. Like THE fastest-growing online community for soccer fans around the world.

If you’re a soccer fan (or football for my European friends), be sure to check out Footbo.com. The site has a section dedicated to aspiring David Beckham’s across the world. Here is a little more about Footbo from the site:

Footbo is the leading online social community for football lovers across the globe. Fans and amateur players can receive customized information, share content/media, and express their knowledge and genuine love of football. Based in London, Footbo was created and managed by people who are truly passionate about football. Some of the activities you can enjoy include the following:

  • Blog about your insights and emotions
  • Read-up on and contribute to your favorite teams and players
  • Predict games and challenge your friends in prediction leagues
  • Connect with your friends & other football fans from around the world
  • Receive live scores, fixtures and personalized news

I went on the amateur part of the site and found it to be simple to use and actually quite fun! Once you create your profile (either individually as a player or with a group as a team), you can create your own soccer biography, complete with stats like the pros, and share photos and videos of your game highlights with your fans. If you are part of team, you can create a customized team page complete with team photo, logo, videos, and team history. Team members can communicate with each other and coordinate events like practice sessions and upcoming games. If I were as dedicated to the sport as they are in Europe, I’d probably be on it every day! The best way I can describe the site is that it’s like Facebook for footballers (I promise I did not make that word up!).

If you’re interested in checking out the site, might I suggest that you start with this tutorial (I personally like the British accent!) hehe!

I was a soldier in Nuremburg Germany. While I was there, I liked to follow the FC Bayern Munchen Team. It is nice to have a site where fans can follow a team even if they are outside the country. JeansandTs@hotmail.com
