Holiday Giveaway: Arctic Exposure With Nigel Marven Published on Monday, November 10, 2008 by

*Update*

This giveaway is now closed.  Thank you so much for stopping by.  The winners are Kathy Pease, Kevin Elliott, Jeffrey W., Augrim, and Lisa L.  Congratulations!

One of the things Jason and I love to do is curl up on the couch with a good movie.  This holiday season grab a loved one and something warm to drink while you prepare for a snow-day adventure unlike any other. From Genius Products and Animal Planet comes Arctic Exposure With Nigel Marven, set to debut on DVD November 25, 2008.    The series originally aired on Animal Planet in 2007.  My dad and I used to love watching real-life documentaries of animals and this is a great way to expose to children to varying wildlife.

Here is a little preview of the newly released title:

Join famed zoologist Nigel Marven on a nine month adventure exploring the wildlife and surrounding area of the Canadian Arctic on an expedition that takes him from the icy wasteland of the far north, across near-endless tundra to the vast boreal forest in the south.  The series takes viewers along for the adventure as Nigel follows the fortunes of the indigenous animals – including polar bear cubs, walruses and an Arctic wolf – that call the extreme conditions of this unique territory home.

This five-part series includes a “Behind-the-Scenes” featurette, and will retail for $39.92.

Win It!  I have 5 copies of Arctic Exposure With Nigel Marven to give away! Head on over to Animal Planet and take a look around. I learned that “The female scorpion keeps her eggs inside her body until they are ready to hatch. When they do, they look very much like tiny versions of their parents, except that they have pale, soft exoskeletons. The mother scorpion carries her babies on her back, caring for and defending them until after their first molt.” while browsing the baby animal guide.

Conservation biologists tend to think of amphibians as environmental “canaries in the coal mine.”

When an ecosystem begins to tip out of balance, amphibians are generally the first to be affected.

When frogs and salamanders begin to die en masse, it means that widescale ecological devastation may be under way.

More amphibian species are under threat than any single animal group, a wopping 1,811 species according to the IUCN.

This accounts for around 31 percent of all known amphibians. Habitat loss and pollution appear to be the major causes.

  • by Deborah Wellenstein November 13, 2008 at 2:10 pm

I learned the following about golden hamsters: (verbatim) “To adapt to life in the hot rocky desert, the golden hamster spends the daytime in underground burrows with many different rooms, including ones for nesting. Most live in family groups and young golden hamsters spend much of their time chasing and playing with their many brothers and sisters. ”

    Thank you for this giveaway!

I looked at the Endangered Species Guide. I did not know there were that many endangered species. Some of the species I looked at include the green sea turtle, Asian elephant, Panamanian golden frog, and Ivory-billed woodpecker. It is sad to think that a lot of species are endangered because of us.

As a Mom, I found it interesting that Giraffes babies drop about six feet to the ground when they’re born. I previously IMAGINED the mother giraffe would lie down to have the baby. Gosh, how wrong I was! Yet, despite that fall, the baby can usually walk around minutes after birth and nurse!

There is so much interesting stuff at Animal Planet. I just about got lost in the Cat Owner’s Guide. Our female cat appears to “tweet” at birds when she watches them out the window, but I just learned that she’s actually exhibiting a typical behavior, clacking her teeth in a chatter of excitement.
