Holiday Gift Idea & Giveaway: My Baby For Nintendo DS Published on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 by

*Update*

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Elizabeth M.

Video games are all the rage with children and with Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld game console, DS, toting them has never been more convenient.  Some may argue that video games may not be as beneficial for development as other types of play.  I beg to differ.  I think video games, when carefully selected for age and gender, can teach children skills such as problem solving, trial and error, perseverance, and collaboration. Pretend play, in particular, can facilitate the early development of skills such as language and communication, social, and motor skills.

SouthPeak Games just released My Baby Girl and My Baby Boy for Nintendo DS. This is the virtual doll of the 21st century!  The focus of these games is on pretend play and life simulation as opposed to competition.  Children start by choosing a name, ethnicity (so PC!), and eye-color for their baby.  Then watch as baby smiles for the first time, walks for the first time, and grows up right before your child’s eyes (do they have a teen version? : )  Your child will be able to help nurture this baby with simple tasks like changing a diaper and feeding a baby from a bottle (lactivists may protest). If your child gets “stuck” he/she can elicit help from a pediatrician.  As the baby achieves developmental milestones, new age-appropriate activities become unlocked.  I tried this out and absolutely love it for it’s educational value.  This would be a perfect gift for my BF’s three little girls who adore dolls!

I do actually LOVE this My Baby Game, as I think it’s so valuable in teaching little ones about child and baby care, but in a fun way.

  • by Lisa P November 20, 2008 at 2:10 pm

I think thgis looks like a great game.. I do think it has eductional benefits, more so then playing pretent with a doll! I like that you can customize your baby. and I cant think of anything I dont like.

I like that it teaches children that responsibilities come along with children, but it is still a fun game. It is a win/win situation.

  • by susan varney November 20, 2008 at 9:34 pm

  • by Shilo Beedy November 20, 2008 at 3:13 pm

I see as more of a fun game but with a little bit of a educational value. I think my daughter would learn more about babies and being kind to them. I can’t think of any negative things to say about the game.

love that it teaches about children

  • by Vicky H. November 21, 2008 at 3:48 am

I think games like My Baby are a fun and easy way to view some of the toughest responsibilities out there. It may have *some* real-life educational information about care taking, but it’s definitely not something to take too seriously in a real life situation.

  • by Susan Smith November 21, 2008 at 3:48 am

My daughter would love this. I think it does teach responsibility.

  • by Freda Satterfield November 21, 2008 at 5:03 am

  • by Rebecca Graham November 21, 2008 at 7:09 am

It has some educational value. I like the game because it is a good clean game that is rated E.

  • by ANGELA KOHLER November 21, 2008 at 9:56 am

SURE IT’S EDUCATIONAL. I DON’T LIKE THAT IT IS SO EXPENSIVE. IT LOOKS FUN, THOUGH.

  • by Kimberly B November 21, 2008 at 12:36 pm

I think this is a great game especially for families who are expecting a new member in the family. It’s another way of getting kids ready for new members.

  • by Nikki November 21, 2008 at 2:55 pm

This game is unique b/c it actually teaches Child Development and understanding. My daughter would love this game !

  • by evelyn November 21, 2008 at 3:41 pm

It gives kids a chance to know some of the things a baby needs

  • by tawnda November 21, 2008 at 5:06 pm

I love it! sure beats carrying around a doll & trying to believe it’s real…
…I just wonder if cleaning up after a ‘finger pain’ eppisode is included?? lol

  • by Denyse November 21, 2008 at 7:46 pm

I think it’d be great for my daughter – it teaches and is educational.

  • by Denise B. November 21, 2008 at 8:11 pm

The downside to this is that this is not a real baby, and your child can leave it laying around. This conditions the child to think the same of real babies as it does with the electronic game having adverse affects–not teaching responsibility.

  • by Mike Weisberg November 21, 2008 at 9:47 pm

    i want to win

  • by Robin Farnsworth November 21, 2008 at 9:51 pm

  • by Rosanne Morrison November 27, 2008 at 1:22 am

I think it’s educational. All of my kids played a lot of video games. They all graduated at the top of their classes. Now I’d like these sort of things for my granddaughters-especially as they fly around a lot.

  • by Vicky Boackle November 27, 2008 at 3:20 am

it is cute and may teach responsibility.

  • by ky2here November 27, 2008 at 2:29 pm

I like that it’s not too teachy/preachy. There is a learning component but it’s not too dry or boring.

  • by dianne November 28, 2008 at 3:16 am

I love teaching things for the grand children. This would be great- and fun!

  • by Dee November 30, 2008 at 3:47 am

I have a sister that is MUCH younger than me..and she’s always wanting to babysit! I’d love this for her to play with it before this baby comes so maybe she’ll learn more! I think it would teach her more about what its REALLY like!

    Thanks!!!

  • by oona b November 30, 2008 at 4:53 pm

I think the My Baby DS game is educational because it helps instill the building blocks for kids to be kind and caring towards their little siblings or if they decide to be babysitters at an older age, it helps them to practice being responsible and make wise choices. And it looks like a lot of fun for my daughter!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • by Mandee December 1, 2008 at 11:54 pm

I think it has some educational value: learning responsibilities and taking care of something. It looks like a cute game. Nothing to dislike about it unless it has really annoying music or something :)

  • by Jaye December 2, 2008 at 12:01 am

Haha, I’m not sure about educational value, but I had fun changing that diaper! I think it’ll be good for kids who like the animal care games. This one makes them babies and that’s pretty cool. I think I’d even enjoy playing the game!

  • by Stacy December 2, 2008 at 2:55 am

Does it wake you up in the middle of the night?

  • by R Hicks December 2, 2008 at 5:10 am

I like it. Teaches the kid real responsibilities.

  • by Erma December 2, 2008 at 2:29 pm

I think it will make kids think twice before having kids and it is very cute. Thanks for the chance to win.

  • by Crystal F December 2, 2008 at 3:34 pm

  • by Jennifer hedden December 2, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    looks like a good game

  • by Betsy P December 2, 2008 at 9:04 pm

I think it definitely has educational value . . . sparking curiosity, creativity, and responsibility, as well as potentially instilling self-confidence. I like that it’s a noncompetitive environment too!

  • by hazel hunt December 2, 2008 at 9:54 pm

    nice!

  • by Melissa O. December 2, 2008 at 10:52 pm

I don’t know if it has educational value but I think it’s very entertaining and caters to a little girl’s mothering instincts. My 8 y/o daughter has been really into baby dolls and baby everything ever since my son was born in April. She wants one of these very much.

  • by Gabriel J. December 3, 2008 at 1:58 am

It looks like a great game.

  • by Melissa V December 3, 2008 at 2:30 am

i think it teaches kids some skills and to care for something! it looks very cute!

  • by Debra F December 3, 2008 at 2:52 am

Anything that emphasizes the responsibility that comes with having children is educational. I think it is great…especially how you can customize the baby. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  • by Elizabeth M. December 3, 2008 at 3:01 am

I think it’s a really cute game but I doubt that it could be categorized as educational. I think it’s just entertaining and perhaps increases empathy in some way.

  • by Janet December 3, 2008 at 11:53 pm

    My Baby Game looks fun:)

  • by Marla December 4, 2008 at 1:20 am

    I think its totally cute.

  • by Angie P December 4, 2008 at 3:17 am

That’s a cute game. I guess it’s kind of educational. The player has to nurture and care for the baby which can teach responsibility. It’s non-vioelent, so I really like that as well.

  • by Candie December 4, 2008 at 3:51 am

I think it is a good start but there is so much more they could be taught. Where is the 3am wake up call and countless sleepless nights. Guess that would be good for the teen rated game

  • by Gianna December 4, 2008 at 4:03 am

    It’s very cute :)
