Holiday Gift Idea & Giveaway: My Baby For Nintendo DS

November 19, 2008 by Caryn

*Update*

This giveaway is now closed.  Thanks for stopping by.  The winner is Elizabeth M.

Video games are all the rage with children and with Nintendo’s dual-screen handheld game console, DS, toting them has never been more convenient.  Some may argue that video games may not be as beneficial for development as other types of play.  I beg to differ.  I think video games, when carefully selected for age and gender, can teach children skills such as problem solving, trial and error, perseverance, and collaboration. Pretend play, in particular, can facilitate the early development of skills such as language and communication, social, and motor skills.

SouthPeak Games just released My Baby Girl and My Baby Boy for Nintendo DS. This is the virtual doll of the 21st century!  The focus of these games is on pretend play and life simulation as opposed to competition.  Children start by choosing a name, ethnicity (so PC!), and eye-color for their baby.  Then watch as baby smiles for the first time, walks for the first time, and grows up right before your child’s eyes (do they have a teen version? : )  Your child will be able to help nurture this baby with simple tasks like changing a diaper and feeding a baby from a bottle (lactivists may protest). If your child gets “stuck” he/she can elicit help from a pediatrician.  As the baby achieves developmental milestones, new age-appropriate activities become unlocked.  I tried this out and absolutely love it for it’s educational value.  This would be a perfect gift for my BF’s three little girls who adore dolls!

  4. Shilo Beedy on November 20th, 2008 3:13 pm

I see as more of a fun game but with a little bit of a educational value. I think my daughter would learn more about babies and being kind to them. I can’t think of any negative things to say about the game.

  18. Vicky H. on November 21st, 2008 3:48 am

I think games like My Baby are a fun and easy way to view some of the toughest responsibilities out there. It may have *some* real-life educational information about care taking, but it’s definitely not something to take too seriously in a real life situation.

  19. Susan Smith on November 21st, 2008 3:48 am

My daughter would love this. I think it does teach responsibility.

  23. Kimberly B on November 21st, 2008 12:36 pm

  26. evelyn on November 21st, 2008 3:41 pm

It gives kids a chance to know some of the things a baby needs

  27. tawnda on November 21st, 2008 5:06 pm

I love it! sure beats carrying around a doll & trying to believe it’s real…
…I just wonder if cleaning up after a ‘finger pain’ eppisode is included?? lol

  28. Denyse on November 21st, 2008 7:46 pm

I think it’d be great for my daughter - it teaches and is educational.

  29. Denise B. on November 21st, 2008 8:11 pm

The downside to this is that this is not a real baby, and your child can leave it laying around. This conditions the child to think the same of real babies as it does with the electronic game having adverse affects–not teaching responsibility.

  30. Mike Weisberg on November 21st, 2008 9:47 pm

    i want to win

    Cute teaching game

  47. Rosanne Morrison on November 27th, 2008 1:22 am

I think it’s educational. All of my kids played a lot of video games. They all graduated at the top of their classes. Now I’d like these sort of things for my granddaughters-especially as they fly around a lot.

  48. Vicky Boackle on November 27th, 2008 3:20 am

it is cute and may teach responsibility.

  49. ky2here on November 27th, 2008 2:29 pm

I like that it’s not too teachy/preachy. There is a learning component but it’s not too dry or boring.

  50. dianne on November 28th, 2008 3:16 am

I love teaching things for the grand children. This would be great- and fun!

  51. Dee on November 30th, 2008 3:47 am

  53. oona b on November 30th, 2008 4:53 pm

I think the My Baby DS game is educational because it helps instill the building blocks for kids to be kind and caring towards their little siblings or if they decide to be babysitters at an older age, it helps them to practice being responsible and make wise choices. And it looks like a lot of fun for my daughter!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  54. Mandee on December 1st, 2008 11:54 pm

I think it has some educational value: learning responsibilities and taking care of something. It looks like a cute game. Nothing to dislike about it unless it has really annoying music or something :)

  55. Jaye on December 2nd, 2008 12:01 am

Haha, I’m not sure about educational value, but I had fun changing that diaper! I think it’ll be good for kids who like the animal care games. This one makes them babies and that’s pretty cool. I think I’d even enjoy playing the game!

  56. Stacy on December 2nd, 2008 2:55 am

Does it wake you up in the middle of the night?

  57. R Hicks on December 2nd, 2008 5:10 am

I like it. Teaches the kid real responsibilities.

  61. Betsy P on December 2nd, 2008 9:04 pm

    nice!

  63. Melissa O. on December 2nd, 2008 10:52 pm

I don’t know if it has educational value but I think it’s very entertaining and caters to a little girl’s mothering instincts. My 8 y/o daughter has been really into baby dolls and baby everything ever since my son was born in April. She wants one of these very much.

  64. Gabriel J. on December 3rd, 2008 1:58 am

  66. Debra F on December 3rd, 2008 2:52 am

Anything that emphasizes the responsibility that comes with having children is educational. I think it is great…especially how you can customize the baby. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  67. Elizabeth M. on December 3rd, 2008 3:01 am

I think it’s a really cute game but I doubt that it could be categorized as educational. I think it’s just entertaining and perhaps increases empathy in some way.

My daughter would just love this game for her Nintendo DS! It looks like so much fun. I think she’d have fun learning about all the different stages of a baby’s development. What a wonderful game!

    I think its totally cute.

  83. Angie P on December 4th, 2008 3:17 am

That’s a cute game. I guess it’s kind of educational. The player has to nurture and care for the baby which can teach responsibility. It’s non-vioelent, so I really like that as well.

  84. Candie on December 4th, 2008 3:51 am

I think it is a good start but there is so much more they could be taught. Where is the 3am wake up call and countless sleepless nights. Guess that would be good for the teen rated game

  85. Gianna on December 4th, 2008 4:03 am

    It’s very cute :)

  86. Donna K on December 4th, 2008 5:05 am
